Shimo in the Monsterverse: The Ice Breathing Titan Explained

Shimo is an ice breathing Titan introduced in Godzilla x Kong: The New Empire (2024), the fifth film in the Monsterverse, where the Skar King uses a crystal to force it to obey him. The Skar King is the tyrannical ruler of a hidden tribe of apes in Hollow Earth.

That control is the whole point of the character. Shimo is not a villain by choice, so the answer to "Is Shimo bad or good?" depends on who is holding the crystal. While the Skar King commands it, Shimo is a weapon aimed at Kong. Once the crystal is gone, the Titan stops being a threat to him.

The film gives no height, weight, age, gender or official species name for Shimo. The Titan is called simply Shimo, with no longer form such as Titanus Shimo and no class label such as Progenitor Titan attached.

The studio behind the series is Legendary Entertainment, not Legendary Pictures, and Warner Bros. distributes it. If you are new to the saga, the Monsterverse characters hub lists the rest of the creatures and people.

Shimo goes from a prisoner used as a weapon to a free creature that settles beside Kong, and the change happens in four steps, each tied to a place or an object in the film.

Step one is the introduction. Kong, searching Hollow Earth for others of his species, comes across a concealed community of apes that includes a young member named Suko. Their ruler, the Skar King, keeps an ice breathing Titan under his thumb by means of a crystal. Shimo does what the crystal demands, not what it would choose.

Step two is the clash with Kong. Shimo hurts Kong's arm badly enough that Trapper, the Titan veterinarian played by Dan Stevens, fits him with a prototype glove to bring his strength back. The injury also pushes the story forward: Jia wakes Mothra, whom the Iwi worship, Mothra settles Godzilla after a brief scuffle with Kong, and the three Titans move on the Skar King's forces together.

Step three is the move to Brazil. Rather than lose underground, the Skar King and Shimo slip through a portal and come out in Rio de Janeiro. There Shimo's cold power sets off a fresh ice age, so a captive creature becomes a danger to a whole city.

Step four is the release. Suko smashes the crystal using Kong's axe, and with that the Skar King loses his hold. Shimo turns around, freezes its former master, and Kong then shatters the Skar King. Afterward Godzilla's atomic breath melts the ice.

Shimo is the Skar King's enslaved weapon, Kong's first opponent and later companion, and has no stated family tie to Godzilla. Those links are defined by control and then by release.

The Skar King is the relationship that matters most. He holds the crystal, he gives the orders, and he is the one Shimo freezes once the crystal breaks. See the Skar King page for the ruler himself.

Kong is first an opponent and then a companion. Shimo injures his arm early on, yet the film ends with Kong returning to Hollow Earth with Shimo and Suko beside him. Suko matters here too, because it is his act with Kong's axe that breaks the crystal.

What about "Is Shimo Godzilla's mom?" Nothing in the film links Shimo to Godzilla by blood or by history, and the film never describes them as relatives. The film also shows no fight between Godzilla and Shimo. Godzilla's part in the ice story is cleanup: he melts the ice with his atomic breath. For the lead Titan, see Godzilla in the Monsterverse, and for Mothra, whom the Iwi worship and who calms Godzilla, see Mothra.

Shimo survives Godzilla x Kong: The New Empire and ends the film free of the Skar King. After Suko destroys the crystal, Shimo freezes the ruler who enslaved it, and Kong shatters the Skar King. In the ending, Kong goes back to Hollow Earth with Shimo and Suko and takes his place as leader of his tribe.

That leaves Shimo alive, unchained and living in Hollow Earth. Legendary lists Godzilla x Kong: Supernova for a US release on March 26, 2027, and nothing published names Shimo in it, so any return is unconfirmed. The New Empire closes on a Hollow Earth with more Titans and more questions for later films.

To see where the film sits in the series, the monsterverse movies in order guide lays out both orders.

Shimo's best moments are the arm injury to Kong, the escape to Rio de Janeiro, and the turn against the Skar King. In my opinion, they work because a creature built around ice gives the film a new kind of damage to show.

Shimo is the most interesting design choice in The New Empire. Fire and radiation are familiar in this series, whereas a frozen Rio de Janeiro looks genuinely different.

My first pick is the arm injury to Kong. It is the scene where the rules of the creature become clear, and it forces a practical answer, which is Trapper's prototype glove. A scare lands harder when it has a cost the heroes must fix.

Second is the escape through the portal to Rio de Janeiro. It could be argued that this is where the Titan stops being a weapon in someone's hand and becomes a force of weather, since the new ice age is Shimo's power at city scale. Paradoxically, Shimo is at its most dangerous right before Suko breaks the crystal.

Third, and my favorite, is the turn against the Skar King. Suko breaks the crystal with Kong's axe, Shimo freezes the tyrant, and Kong shatters the Skar King. Perhaps the best thing about it is that Shimo gets to choose, even if only once.

On "Is Shimo stronger than Godzilla?", I would not give a verdict, because the film has no Shimo and Godzilla fight to measure it against. For a test of raw strength between Titans, the godzilla vs kong matchup is the better comparison.
