Sonic Characters: Names, Voice Actors and Who They Are

The three Sonic films have a core cast of five heroes and villains, Sonic, Tails, Knuckles, Shadow and Dr. Robotnik, supported by a human family and a handful of government staff. Below you will find each name, the actor behind it and the film where the character arrives. If you are planning a family viewing, the sonic movies in order guide shows which film to start with, and the sonic movies hub covers the whole saga.

Sonic is the lead in every film, voiced by Ben Schwartz, who is billed first each time. The sonic the hedgehog character page has the full profile. In Sonic the Hedgehog (2020), directed by Jeff Fowler, he is a young blue hedgehog who can run at supersonic speed. His guardian Longclaw sends him to Earth with a bag of magic rings after an attack on his home world, and he spends ten years in hiding in a cave near Green Hills, Montana. Fowler directed both sequels as well.

Tails first appears in the mid-credits scene of Sonic the Hedgehog (2020), where a two-tailed fox arrives through a ring portal to find Sonic. He joins the story properly in the sonic 2 movie, where he comes along to help Sonic face the new danger. Colleen O'Shaughnessey voices him, and the films credit him simply as Tails. The tails sonic page goes deeper.

Knuckles the Echidna is voiced by Idris Elba and makes his debut in the second film, where he hunts for the Master Emerald. TheWrap reported Elba's casting in August 2021. See knuckles sonic movie for more.

Shadow arrives in sonic the hedgehog 3, voiced by Keanu Reeves, whose casting Variety reported. The film opens in 1974, when this alien hedgehog is captured by the military agency G.U.N. and studied by Professor Gerald Robotnik. His page, shadow the hedgehog movie, has the details.

Dr. Robotnik is the villain in all three films, played by Jim Carrey. He is an eccentric inventor, called in by the military to find the cause of a power outage in the first film. Searches often use the name Doctor Eggman for the same character, but the films credit Dr. Robotnik, so that is the name used here. In the third film Carrey is credited as both Ivo Robotnik and Gerald Robotnik. The profile is at dr robotnik, and the wider rogues gallery sits under sonic villains.

The humans are as important to these films as the hedgehogs, and they are a large part of what sets the movies apart from the games. Tom Wachowski (James Marsden) is the friendly sheriff of Green Hills, and tom wachowski sonic explains how he becomes Sonic's friend. Maddie Wachowski (Tika Sumpter) is his wife, and maddie wachowski sonic covers her role. Natasha Rothwell plays Maddie's sister Rachel, and Adam Pally plays Wade Whipple.

Agent Stone (Lee Majdoub) is Robotnik's assistant and appears in all three films, which makes him one of the most reliable faces in the saga. His page is agent stone sonic. The government side also includes Neal McDonough as Major Bennington, Tom Butler as Walters (credited as Vice Chairman Walters in the first film and Commander Walters later) and Krysten Ritter as Director Rockwell in the third film. Shemar Moore plays Randall in the sequels, Alyla Browne plays Maria, and Jorma Taccone plays Kyle Lancebottom.

The female characters in the films are Maddie Wachowski, her sister Rachel, Maria and Director Rockwell, played by Tika Sumpter, Natasha Rothwell, Alyla Browne and Krysten Ritter. Amy Rose, Rouge the Bat, Cream the Rabbit and Metal Sonic, who are popular in the games, are not among the top 15 billed cast of any of the three films. If a later film adds any of them, the sonic 4 page is where the news will land. For the games roster, see sonic games.

The films show Sonic as a young hedgehog who has lived on Earth in hiding for ten years when the story begins. Shadow's history reaches back to 1974, so it is much longer than anyone else's. For the full line of events, the sonic timeline is the best companion, and sonic cast lists every actor by film.

Paramount has set Sonic the Hedgehog 4 for March 19, 2027 in the US, and the film is now in post production. If you are catching up before then, start with Sonic the Hedgehog (2020) and open the character pages as each new name appears.
