Spider-Gwen: The Earth-65 Spider-Woman Explained

Spider-Gwen is the Spider-Woman of Earth-65, a version of Gwen Stacy who fights crime in her own universe and crosses into others when the multiverse breaks open. Hailee Steinfeld voices her in Spider-Man: Into the Spider-Verse (2018), directed by Bob Persichetti, Peter Ramsey and Rodney Rothman, and again in Spider-Man: Across the Spider-Verse (2023), directed by Kemp Powers, Justin K. Thompson and Joaquim Dos Santos. Both films credit the role as Gwen Stacy (voice).

Why does the label matter? Because this franchise has more than one Gwen. Bryce Dallas Howard plays Gwen Stacy in Spider-Man 3, and Emma Stone plays her in The Amazing Spider-Man and The Amazing Spider-Man 2. None of those versions is a Spider-Woman, and they are covered on the Gwen Stacy page. The animated Gwen belongs to the Spider-Verse series, so for the wider cast of that saga, see the Spider-Verse characters.

Steinfeld is billed third in Spider-Man: Into the Spider-Verse and second, behind Shameik Moore, in Spider-Man: Across the Spider-Verse.

The films never show how Gwen Stacy gains her powers; she arrives in each one already working as the Spider-Woman of Earth-65. What they do show is her path from a guest in someone else's story to a lead in her own.

In Spider-Man: Into the Spider-Verse, Kingpin's collider tears open the walls between universes and pulls a group of Spider-people into Miles Morales's Brooklyn. Gwen joins Peter B. Parker, Spider-Man Noir, Peni Parker and Spider-Ham, and the team breaks into Kingpin's lab to reach the collider. Miles destroys it and sends the visitors home to their own worlds, and Gwen finds a way to stay in touch with him from her own dimension. That link is the thread the sequel pulls.

In Spider-Man: Across the Spider-Verse, Gwen is isolated on Earth-65 and pursued by her father, a police captain, after a tragic accident involving her world's Peter Parker. She reconnects with Miles, and the two chase the Spot, a villain who can move between universes. The trail leads to the Spider-Society, a multiversal group led by Miguel O'Hara. When Miles is imprisoned and then trapped on Earth-42, Gwen returns to Earth-1610 with allies to bring him home. The film stops on a cliffhanger, with Gwen and a team of Spider-People preparing for the Spot's planned attack on New York.

Spider-Gwen's closest bond is with Miles Morales, and her other key relationships are with her father George Stacy, Peter B. Parker, Miguel O'Hara and the Spot.

Miles Morales. Gwen meets Miles in Spider-Man: Into the Spider-Verse and keeps contact with him from her own dimension after the heroes go home. In Spider-Man: Across the Spider-Verse she reconnects with him and ends up fighting to bring him back. See the Miles Morales page for his side of the story.

George Stacy. George Stacy is Gwen's father, a police captain on Earth-65 voiced by Shea Whigham in Spider-Man: Across the Spider-Verse. He pursues her through much of that film.

Peter B. Parker. Peter B. Parker is the older, worn out Spider-Man from another dimension who is part of the team Gwen joins in Spider-Man: Into the Spider-Verse. Jake Johnson voices him in both films, according to TMDB.

Miguel O'Hara and the Spider-Society. Miguel leads the multiversal group that Gwen and Miles run into in the sequel, and he insists that certain canon events must happen to keep realities stable. His arrival is teased in the first film's post credits scene, and his own profile sits at Miguel O'Hara.

The Spot. Jason Schwartzman voices the scientist turned villain who can travel between universes, and he is the threat that pulls Gwen and Miles together again.

Spider-Gwen is alive at the end of Across the Spider-Verse, and her story is unresolved. The film ends on a cliffhanger, with Miles preparing to break out of Earth-42 while Gwen and a team of Spider-People ready themselves for the Spot's coming attack on Earth-1610's New York.

Spider-Man: Beyond the Spider-Verse is the next chapter, which Sony moved to June 18, 2027. Gwen's return is not confirmed. The announcements so far do not list the cast, though the cliffhanger leaves her squarely in the middle of the story.

Gwen's three best moments are the end of Spider-Man: Into the Spider-Verse, her reintroduction in Spider-Man: Across the Spider-Verse and her decision to go back for Miles. Each one is a point where the story changes direction around her.

First, the end of Into the Spider-Verse. Most of the visiting heroes disappear back to their own worlds, yet Gwen finds a way to stay in touch with Miles. This sets up the sequel by turning a team-up into a friendship with stakes.

Second, her reintroduction in Across the Spider-Verse. The film opens by showing Gwen cut off from friends and chased by her own father, which is a very different starting point from the supporting role she held in the first film.

Third, her decision to go back for Miles. Gwen returns to Earth-1610 with allies to bring him home. The film leaves the outcome open, so the full weight of that choice will only land once Beyond the Spider-Verse arrives. If you are new to the series, start with the first film, then watch the second with Gwen in mind.
