Elizabeth Shaw in the Alien Franchise: Who She Is and What Happens
Elizabeth Shaw is the archaeologist at the center of the Alien prequels, played by Noomi Rapace in Prometheus (2012), directed by Ridley Scott, and Alien: Covenant (2017) ties her back into the story. She sits at the very start of the saga's chronological order, in 2089, ahead of Alien (1979).

Who Is Elizabeth Shaw in Alien?
Elizabeth Shaw is one of two archaeologists who find the ancient star map that sends the Prometheus expedition to the moon LV-223 in 2089, and she is played by Noomi Rapace, who is billed first in the cast of Prometheus (2012). Ridley Scott directed the film, and it is the earliest story in the saga's chronological order, placed ahead of Alien: Covenant and Alien (1979).
Her discovery comes from Scotland, where she and Charlie Holloway find a map that matches art made by cultures with no known contact with each other. Shaw reads it as an invitation from humanity's creators, whom the film calls the Engineers. That belief drives the whole expedition, because the billionaire Peter Weyland pays for the trip on the strength of it. The ship carries a crew led by Meredith Vickers and Captain Janek, and the android David watches over them while they sleep through the voyage.
She is an unusual lead for this series. The earlier films belong to Ellen Ripley, who meets the creature by circumstance, whereas Shaw goes looking for something and sets out with a question rather than a job.

What Happens to Elizabeth Shaw in Prometheus?Spoilers
Shaw's arc in Prometheus moves from belief, through a run of betrayals, to a choice about where to go next, and she chooses the Engineers' home world over Earth. The crew reaches LV-223 in 2089 and enters a vast structure holding stone cylinders, a giant carved head and a dead Engineer. At that point Shaw is still the expedition's believer, and nothing yet suggests how badly the trip will go.
The damage starts with David. He pockets a cylinder of black liquid and later puts a drop in Holloway's drink. Holloway sickens, Vickers will not let him back aboard, and she burns him at his own request. Shaw then finds she is pregnant, though she cannot have children, and she removes a squid like creature from her own body on an automated surgical table. The scene echoes the chestburster of Alien (1979), but here the victim fights back and walks away.
Shaw also learns that Peter Weyland, Vickers' father, has been hiding on the ship because he hopes the Engineers can extend his life. Once Weyland and David wake the single living Engineer, it answers with violence and kills Weyland and most of the team. It then restarts its ship, which is meant to carry a deadly weapon to Earth, and Janek and the last crew members crash Prometheus into it. Vickers dies in the wreck.
What Shaw does next defines her. The creature she cut out has grown enormous and overpowers the Engineer. She retrieves what is left of David, takes another Engineer ship with his help, and sets course to ask the Engineers why they wanted to destroy humanity. The last image, a new creature bursting from the dead Engineer's chest, points ahead to the monster of the first film.
Who Are Elizabeth Shaw's Key Relationships?
Shaw's most important relationships are with Charlie Holloway, David and Peter Weyland, and each one is shaped by what the others want from the Engineers. Holloway is her fellow archaeologist and the other half of the discovery, and his death from the black liquid turns the expedition from wonder to horror for her.
David is the relationship that matters most, and it is the least comfortable. He is the android who tended the sleeping crew, took the cylinder of black liquid and slipped a drop of it into Holloway's drink. At the end of Prometheus he is also the one who helps her take the second Engineer ship. Alien: Covenant (2017), directed by Ridley Scott, then reveals that David and Shaw reached the same planet together, and that he released a pathogen there that wiped out the local population. Michael Fassbender plays David in both films. For his wider history, see David prometheus and Alien androids.
Weyland funds the trip, and his motive is private: he hopes the Engineers can give him longer life, a very different reason from hers. Vickers is his daughter, and Janek is the captain who, with the last crew members, crashes Prometheus into the Engineer's ship to stop it reaching Earth.
In Covenant, Daniels, played by Katherine Waterston, is the crew member who realizes that the android who saved the survivors is David, not Walter. David tells the survivors that he and Shaw came to that same planet before.
What Happened to Elizabeth Shaw After Prometheus and in Alien: Covenant?Spoilers
Shaw is alive at the end of Prometheus, flying toward the Engineers' home world with what is left of David, and Alien: Covenant refers back to her later. Covenant is set in 2104, fifteen years after Prometheus, when the colony ship Covenant picks up a human voice signal from a nearby planet. David, who survived the earlier mission, takes the survivors to a ruined settlement and reveals that he and Shaw came there before. He also reveals that he released a pathogen that wiped out the local population.
The plot of Covenant gives no further account of what became of her after that. Her question about why the Engineers wanted to destroy humanity is never answered by Shaw herself on screen, and the franchise carries on without it.
There is also the matter of what comes next. A new Alien film is in early development at 20th Century Studios, with Ridley Scott producing and Aaron Guzikowski writing, according to TheWrap on October 23, 2026. It has no director and no release date. TheWrap reports that the project is tied to Prometheus and Alien: Covenant, which is a rumor-level link and not a confirmed return for Shaw. Current status is tracked on the Alien Romulus 2 page.
Best Moments for Elizabeth Shaw: A Fan's Pick
In my opinion, Shaw's best moments are the ones where the film lets her act on belief, and the surgical table scene is the strongest of them. Her creature removal is the point where Prometheus most openly borrows from Alien (1979), yet the scene is built around a woman who cannot have children and learns she is pregnant, which is a different kind of dread from Kane at the dinner table. It could be argued that it also sets her apart from Ripley, who in Alien 3 carries an alien Queen embryo and chooses to end her own life rather than let the company take it. Shaw cuts hers out and lives.
The second moment I rate is the quiet one before it, when David puts the black liquid into Holloway's drink. The scene is what gives the rest of her story its edge, because her closest ally in the expedition has been undone by a colleague the audience has been told to trust.
The third is her last decision. She could have gone home to Earth, and she picks the Engineers' world instead, with what is left of David beside her. Perhaps that is the most Shaw thing the film does, and it is why her arc feels more like a question than a conclusion. Covenant, in turn, lets that question hang over its own story.
If you want the full picture of the prequel era, start with Prometheus, then Alien Covenant, and use the Alien timeline to see where both sit before the Nostromo.
