Batman Movies: The Series at a Glance

The Batman movies are a run of theatrical films about Bruce Wayne, a Gotham billionaire who fights crime as a masked vigilante, made over almost six decades by very different directors. The series holds 8 main films and 3 spin-offs, and the oldest film is a spin-off: Batman (1966), directed by Leslie H. Martinson, in which Adam West and Burt Ward face the Joker, the Penguin, the Riddler and Catwoman after the four villains join forces as the United Underworld. Their scheme centers on a machine that turns people into dust and can bring them back, and their targets are the delegates of the United Nations Security Council.

The main run starts with Tim Burton. Batman (1989) stars Michael Keaton as Bruce Wayne and Jack Nicholson as the Joker, and it took $412 million worldwide on a $35 million budget, according to Box Office Mojo. Burton came back for Batman Returns (1992), adding Danny DeVito as the Penguin and Michelle Pfeiffer as Catwoman. Joel Schumacher then directed Batman Forever (1995), with Val Kilmer, Tommy Lee Jones as Two-Face and Jim Carrey as the Riddler, and Batman & Robin (1997), with George Clooney, Arnold Schwarzenegger as Mr. Freeze and Uma Thurman as Poison Ivy. Michael Gough played Alfred and Pat Hingle played Commissioner Gordon in all four, which is the thread that holds that era together.

Christopher Nolan reset the character with Batman Begins (2005), then made The Dark Knight (2008), with Heath Ledger as the Joker, and The Dark Knight Rises (2012), with Tom Hardy as Bane. Christian Bale plays Bruce Wayne in all three, and the last two each passed $1 billion worldwide, the only films in the series to do so. Matt Reeves then directed The Batman (2022), starring Robert Pattinson, which runs 177 minutes, cost $200 million and took $773 million worldwide.

The two animated spin-offs sit outside the main run. Batman: Mask of the Phantasm (1993), directed by Bruce Timm and Eric Radomski, features Kevin Conroy as Batman and Mark Hamill as the Joker, and it was the first animated Batman film to get a theatrical release, according to TheWrap. The Lego Batman Movie (2017), directed by Chris McKay, gives the lead voice to Will Arnett. Four further films feature Batman without belonging to the series: Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice (2016), Justice League (2017), Zack Snyder's Justice League (2021) and The Flash (2023), in which Michael Keaton returns as Bruce Wayne. They appear in the watch order.

Television enters through The Penguin, an eight-episode HBO crime drama that premiered on September 19, 2024 and follows Colin Farrell's Oz Cobb in the days after The Batman (2022). Batman does not appear in it. Added together, the recorded worldwide grosses of the ten films that have them come to about $4.8 billion, taken from Box Office Mojo and The Numbers, and Batman (1966) has no recorded gross. Which Batman Movie Should You Watch First?

Release order and chronological order are identical for every film in the series, so the simplest plan is to watch by release year. The full guide is on Batman movies in order, and the short version is below.

  1. Batman (1966)
  2. Batman (1989)
  3. Batman Returns (1992)
  4. Batman: Mask of the Phantasm (1993)
  5. Batman Forever (1995)
  6. Batman & Robin (1997)
  7. Batman Begins (2005)
  8. The Dark Knight (2008)
  9. The Dark Knight Rises (2012)
  10. The Lego Batman Movie (2017)
  11. The Batman (2022)

The four appearance films slot in beside them: Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice (2016) after The Dark Knight Rises, Justice League (2017) after The Lego Batman Movie, Zack Snyder's Justice League (2021) after Justice League, and The Flash (2023) after The Batman (2022). The Penguin (HBO, 2024) fits between The Batman (2022) and The Batman Part II, since it picks up Oz Cobb's story after the film.

If you are new to the character, the practical choice is by era rather than by number. Anyone who wants one actor's complete story should take the Nolan trilogy (Batman Begins to The Dark Knight Rises), because Bale, Michael Caine, Gary Oldman and Morgan Freeman carry through all three. Anyone who wants the quickest route to the current version can start with The Batman (2022) and read up on the earlier films afterward. The 1989 to 1997 run is the one where continuity between films matters most, so it is best taken in sequence.

Is There a New Batman Movie Coming?

Yes: The Batman Part II is in production and listed for February 18, 2028 in the US, although production was paused on October 5, 2026. The pause was announced by DC Studios as temporary, while director Matt Reeves deals with a family matter, according to The A.V. Club and TheWrap. TheWrap adds that the February 2028 date could shift depending on how long the pause lasts, and Deadline's sources said it was too early to tell whether the pause would push the film back. The full status is on the the batman part 2 page.

The date has already moved several times. The film was first set for October 3, 2025, and Variety reported on March 13, 2024 that it had moved to October 2, 2026. It later shifted to October 1, 2027, and then to February 2028, according to TheWrap and Variety Australia. No UK or AU release dates have been stated in those reports.

Filming was reported to be under way in London on June 12, 2026, when Reeves posted a set photo. On May 7, 2026 he had released first camera test images showing the Batmobile in a snowstorm. Reeves is reported to direct and to write with Mattson Tomlin.

The cast is reported rather than officially confirmed. Robert Pattinson is reported to return as Batman, with Colin Farrell as the Penguin and Andy Serkis as Alfred Pennyworth. TheWrap reports Sebastian Stan as Harvey Dent and Scarlett Johansson as Gilda Dent, and The A.V. Club reports Brian Tyree Henry and Sebastian Koch among the additions, with TheWrap also reporting Charles Dance. Official videos will be collected on the the batman part 2 trailer page.

Who Are the Main Batman Characters?

Batman characters

The core of the series is Bruce Wayne, the Joker and Alfred Pennyworth, supported by Robin, Catwoman, the Penguin, the Riddler, Two-Face, Bane, Commissioner Gordon, Scarecrow and Ra's al Ghul. Because each era recasts every role, the quickest way to keep them straight is by actor and year. The Batman characters page covers each of them, and the Batman cast page lists the crews.

Batman himself has been played, by release year, by Adam West (1966), Michael Keaton (1989 and 1992), Kevin Conroy (voice, 1993), Val Kilmer (1995), George Clooney (1997), Christian Bale (2005, 2008 and 2012), Ben Affleck (2016, 2017 and 2021), Will Arnett (voice, 2017) and Robert Pattinson (2022), with Keaton returning in 2023 in The Flash. The long version is on Batman actors in order, and the lead role is covered on the Bruce Wayne page.

The Joker shows the same pattern: Cesar Romero in 1966, Jack Nicholson in 1989, Mark Hamill as the voice in 1993, Heath Ledger in 2008 and Zach Galifianakis as the voice in 2017. Alfred has been played by Alan Napier, Michael Gough for four films, Michael Caine, Ralph Fiennes as a voice and Andy Serkis in The Batman (2022). Commissioner Gordon passes from Neil Hamilton to Pat Hingle, Gary Oldman and Jeffrey Wright.

The rogues gallery moves just as often. Catwoman was Lee Meriwether, Michelle Pfeiffer, Anne Hathaway and Zoë Kravitz, and the Penguin was Burgess Meredith, Danny DeVito and Colin Farrell, who also carries the role into the HBO series The Penguin. The Riddler was Frank Gorshin, Jim Carrey and Paul Dano. Two-Face appears as Harvey Dent played by Billy Dee Williams in 1989, as Tommy Lee Jones in 1995 and as Aaron Eckhart in 2008. Bane is Jeep Swenson in 1997 and Tom Hardy in 2012, Scarecrow is Cillian Murphy in Batman Begins and The Dark Knight, and Ra's al Ghul is credited to Ken Watanabe in Batman Begins. Robin is Burt Ward in 1966 and Chris O'Donnell in 1995 and 1997, covered on the Robin page. The wider list is on Batman villains.
