What Are the Predator Movies and How Many Are There?
The Predator movies are a franchise of nine films built around the Yautja, the alien hunters at the center of the series. Five films make up the main saga and four are spin-offs, and the full count is on the page for how many Predator movies are there. The main films are Predator (1987), Predator 2, Predators, The Predator and Predator: Badlands. The spin-offs are Prey, the animated Predator: Killer of Killers, and the two crossover films AVP: Alien vs. Predator and Aliens vs. Predator: Requiem.
It started with Predator 1987, directed by John McTiernan, in which Arnold Schwarzenegger plays Major Alan 'Dutch' Schaefer, the leader of a mercenary team flown into a Central American jungle. The film cost $15 million and grossed about $98 million worldwide, according to Box Office Mojo. Kevin Peter Hall, who played the creature, returned for Predator 2 (1990), directed by Stephen Hopkins. That sequel moves the hunt to Los Angeles during a record heat wave in 1997, with Danny Glover as Lieutenant Mike Harrigan. A city is a very different hunting ground from a jungle, and the film leans on that with a gang war and a federal task force led by Peter Keyes.
After a long gap the series split into two tracks. The crossover films pair the Yautja with the Alien creature and live in the Alien vs Predator section of the site. Alien vs Predator 2004, directed by Paul W. S. Anderson, sends Sanaa Lathan's Alexa Woods to Bouvet Island near Antarctica, and AVP Requiem (2007), directed by Colin Strause and Greg Strause, drops a hybrid creature into the small town of Gunnison, Colorado. The main saga resumed with Predators 2010, directed by Nimród Antal, where Adrien Brody's mercenary Royce wakes up falling into a jungle on another planet. The Predator 2018 was directed by Shane Black, who also played Rick Hawkins in the 1987 film, and stars Boyd Holbrook as the army sniper Quinn McKenna.
Dan Trachtenberg then reset the tone. Prey Predator (2022) follows Amber Midthunder as Naru, a young Comanche healer in 1719 who wants to prove herself as a hunter, and it debuted on Hulu. Predator Killer of Killers (2025) is the animated entry, an 85 minute anthology of three stories set in different eras, and it opens with a Viking raid in the year 841. Trachtenberg directed Predator Badlands (2025) as well, with Dimitrius Schuster-Koloamatangi as Dek, a young Yautja cast out by his father, and Elle Fanning as Thia, a damaged synthetic, on the deadly planet Genna.
On money, the Predator box office record belongs to the newest film. Predator: Badlands grossed $184.6 million worldwide on a $105 million budget, the highest of the seven films with theatrical figures according to Box Office Mojo, and it opened to about $40 million in the US. Those seven films have earned about $935 million combined. Prey and Predator: Killer of Killers streamed, so neither has a box office total.
Music and casting each have a page of their own. Alan Silvestri scored the first two films and Sarah Schachner scored both Prey and Badlands, which is covered on the Predator soundtrack page. For billing lists see the Predator cast page, for the order of events see the Predator timeline, and for opinions see Predator movies ranked and Predator reviews.

Which Order Should You Watch the Predator Movies?
You can watch the Predator movies in release order to see the franchise as audiences met it, or in chronological order to follow the story from its earliest era. The full guide is on the Predator movies in order page.
Release order:
- Predator (1987)
- Predator 2 (1990)
- AVP: Alien vs. Predator (2004)
- Aliens vs. Predator: Requiem (2007)
- Predators (2010)
- The Predator (2018)
- Prey (2022)
- Predator: Killer of Killers (2025)
- Predator: Badlands (2025)
Chronological order:
- Predator: Killer of Killers (opens in the year 841)
- Prey (set in 1719)
- Predator (1987)
- Predator 2 (set in 1997)
- AVP: Alien vs. Predator
- Aliens vs. Predator: Requiem
- Predators
- The Predator
- Predator: Badlands
The crossover films are the awkward fit, since they sit fifth and sixth chronologically but belong to a different branch of the series. This list covers only the nine Predator films, so the wider Alien films are not slotted into it.
So, where should a newcomer begin? In my opinion, release order is the safest route, because Predator (1987) is the film every later entry answers to, and it runs a tight 107 minutes. Its jungle squad of Schwarzenegger, Carl Weathers, Bill Duke and Jesse Ventura is the template that Predators copied in 2010 with a team of strangers dropped onto an alien game preserve, and that echo only lands if you saw the original first. The creature design matters here too, since producer John Davis told Variety the Yautja needed to be taller than the first idea, and Kevin Peter Hall's frame became the silhouette every sequel keeps.
It could be argued that Prey is the easier doorway for someone who has never seen a Predator film, since its setup (a 1719 hunt on the Great Plains) needs no earlier knowledge. Dan Trachtenberg shot it with natural light and torchlight in Alberta, and Dane DiLiegro, who is 6 ft 9, plays a feral, more animal Predator. At 100 minutes and a $65 million budget it is also a useful contrast with the $15 million original, which had to hide its creature for most of the running time.
The chronological route suits a second viewing. Starting with Predator: Killer of Killers (85 minutes, $50 million) and Prey shows how the Yautja hunt with blades and plasma before any human has a machine gun, and then Predator (1987) reads as the point where the hunters meet modern soldiers. Paradoxically, that order spoils the slow reveal of the first film, which is why I would keep it for repeat watches and not a first run. Predator: Badlands, at 107 minutes, ends both lists, so a newcomer finishing either route lands on the same film.
Is There a New Predator Movie After Badlands?
Predator: Badlands, released in the US on November 7, 2025, is still the last film in the series, and as of November 3, 2026 no tenth entry has a title, cast or date. Anyone looking for Predator movies in 2026 will find nothing newer than Badlands. The new Predator movie page follows any change in status.
What exists so far is conversation, and it is labeled below. Dan Trachtenberg told Gizmodo, in an interview published the day Badlands opened, that he has "a pretty good idea of where things could go", without naming a project (unconfirmed). On September 28, 2026, Gizmodo reported that he is stepping away from Predator to direct an untitled Sleeping Beauty inspired film for Disney, and that report offers no status or date for another Predator film (reported). ComicBook.com, in February 2026, described a Prey sequel, an Alien crossover, a follow up to Killer of Killers and Schwarzenegger returning as Dutch as all unconfirmed. TheWrap wrote on November 11, 2025 that Badlands closes on a sequel hook and that Disney and Trachtenberg reportedly see room for a new series, with no title or date attached.

Are all Predator movies connected?
The Predator movies share one alien species, the Yautja, but they are not one continuous story, so you can watch most of them on their own.
