Marvel Movies: What the Marvel Cinematic Universe Covers

Marvel movies are the theatrical films of the Marvel Cinematic Universe (MCU), the shared series that Marvel Studios launched with Iron Man (2008), directed by Jon Favreau. It now counts 34 films plus four Spider-Man films, and added together the 34 have taken in more than $28 billion worldwide, going by Box Office Mojo.

How many Marvel movies were there before Avengers: Doomsday? The count is 38 released theatrical films: 34 in the main release order and the four Spider-Man titles, Spider-Man: Homecoming (2017), Spider-Man: Far From Home (2019), Spider-Man: No Way Home (2021) and Spider-Man: Brand New Day (2026). Those four sit in the Spider-Man section of the site, so we link to them rather than retell them. For the grid and the running total, see how many Marvel movies exist. Disney+ series belong to the wider Marvel franchise but sit outside this film list.

The First Run: 2008 to 2012

Iron Man (2008) introduced Tony Stark, the head of a weapons company who builds a crude armored suit with the doctor Yinsen after his convoy is attacked in Afghanistan. The Incredible Hulk (2008), directed by Louis Leterrier, followed Bruce Banner as he hid in Rio de Janeiro, and Iron Man 2 (2010) set Tony against Ivan Vanko at the Monaco Grand Prix. Thor (2011), directed by Kenneth Branagh, sent the Asgardian prince to Earth without his powers, while Captain America: The First Avenger (2011), directed by Joe Johnston, opened in 1942 with Steve Rogers rejected again and again by army recruiters. The Avengers (2012), directed by Joss Whedon, then pulled the heroes together after Loki stepped through a portal opened by the Tesseract.

Sequels and New Teams: 2013 to 2015

Iron Man 3 (2013), directed by Shane Black, found Tony sleepless after the alien attack on New York, and Thor: The Dark World (2013), directed by Alan Taylor, pitted Thor against the Dark Elf Malekith. Captain America: The Winter Soldier (2014), directed by Joe and Anthony Russo, placed Steve Rogers inside S.H.I.E.L.D. in Washington, D.C. Guardians of the Galaxy (2014), directed by James Gunn, introduced Peter Quill, the Ravagers and the Awesome Mix soundtrack. Avengers: Age of Ultron (2015), directed by Whedon, gave the team Ultron to fight, and Ant-Man (2015), directed by Peyton Reed, followed the thief Scott Lang after Hank Pym recruited him.

From Civil War to Endgame: 2016 to 2019

Captain America: Civil War (2016), directed by the Russo brothers, split the Avengers over government oversight after a bombing at a UN conference in Vienna. Doctor Strange (2016), directed by Scott Derrickson, took a neurosurgeon to Kamar-Taj in Kathmandu. Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2 (2017) introduced Ego, and Thor: Ragnarok (2017), directed by Taika Waititi, pitted Thor against Hela, with Brisbane among its filming locations. Black Panther (2018), directed by Ryan Coogler, took the series to Wakanda. Avengers: Infinity War (2018) follows Thanos as he hunts the six Infinity Stones, and Ant-Man and the Wasp (2018) heads into the Quantum Realm. Captain Marvel (2019), directed by Anna Boden and Ryan Fleck, rewinds to 1995, and Avengers: Endgame (2019), at 181 minutes, followed in April as the highest grossing film in the series.

The Newer Films: 2021 to 2025

Black Widow (2021), directed by Cate Shortland, is set in 2016, years before its release, and sends Natasha Romanoff after the Red Room. Shang-Chi and the Legend of the Ten Rings (2021), directed by Destin Daniel Cretton, centers on a valet driver and his father Wenwu, while Eternals (2021), directed by Chloé Zhao, follows ten immortals sent to Earth by Arishem. Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness (2022), directed by Sam Raimi, adds America Chavez, and Thor: Love and Thunder (2022) brings Gorr and Jane Foster as the Mighty Thor. Black Panther: Wakanda Forever (2022) turns to Shuri and the kingdom of Talokan, Ant-Man and the Wasp: Quantumania (2023) brings Kang the Conqueror, and Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3 (2023) explores how Rocket was made.

The Marvels (2023), directed by Nia DaCosta, took in about $206 million worldwide against a $270 million budget, the lowest gross of the 34. Deadpool & Wolverine (2024), directed by Shawn Levy, is the only one of the 34 rated R in the US, and it grossed about $1.34 billion. Captain America: Brave New World (2025), directed by Julius Onah, makes Sam Wilson the lead. Thunderbolts\* (2025), directed by Jake Schreier, teams Yelena Belova with John Walker, Ava Starr and Antonia Dreykov. The Fantastic 4: First Steps (2025), directed by Matt Shakman, is set on the alternate reality Earth-828.

To go deeper, the Marvel characters, Marvel cast and Marvel timeline pages follow the people and the story, and the MCU phases page groups the films by phase. The Marvel box office, Marvel soundtrack, Marvel reviews and Marvel merchandise pages cover the rest, and Marvel movies ranked holds our own verdicts.

Marvel Movies in Order: Release Order or Chronological?

The simplest answer to Marvel movies in order is release order, which runs from Iron Man (2008) as number 1 to The Fantastic 4: First Steps (2025) as number 34, with the four Spider-Man films slotted in by release date. Both full lists, with every film numbered, are on the Marvel movies in order page.

Chronological order opens somewhere else. Captain America: The First Avenger comes first because it is set in 1942, Captain Marvel (2019) second because it is set in 1995, and Iron Man (2008) third, followed by Iron Man 2, The Incredible Hulk, Thor (2011) and The Avengers. Later on, Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2 moves ahead of Avengers: Age of Ultron, Black Widow (2021) moves back to sit right after Captain America: Civil War, and Black Panther: Wakanda Forever comes before Thor: Love and Thunder. The Fantastic 4: First Steps is the last of the 34 in both orders.

The Spider-Man films take their release slots in both lists: Homecoming after Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2, Far From Home after Avengers: Endgame, No Way Home after Eternals (2021) and Brand New Day after The Fantastic 4: First Steps. Two Disney+ specials from 2022 fit around the films as well, with Werewolf by Night after Thor: Love and Thunder and The Guardians of the Galaxy Holiday Special after Black Panther: Wakanda Forever, though neither counts among the 34.

In my opinion, release order is the better first watch. Captain Marvel (2019) jumps back to 1995, and it plays more like a flashback once you have met Nick Fury in Iron Man 2 and Captain America: The First Avenger. Perhaps the best use of chronological order is a second pass, when you already know where each hero ends up. If you are new to the series, start with Iron Man (2008), keep going in release order, and open the watch order page when you want to plan a rewatch.

Avengers: Doomsday and the Marvel Movies Coming Out Next

The next Marvel movie is Avengers: Doomsday, which opens in US theaters on December 18, 2026, according to Disney and Box Office Mojo. It is directed by Anthony and Joe Russo, who made Captain America: The Winter Soldier, Captain America: Civil War, Avengers: Infinity War and Avengers: Endgame, so the film returns the series to the directors of its biggest team ups.

Which Marvel movies are coming out in 2026? Two are dated for the year: Spider-Man: Brand New Day, already released on July 31, 2026, and Doomsday. After Doomsday comes Avengers: Secret Wars, reported for December 17, 2027, after Variety and TheWrap covered the move from May 7, 2027. Production on Doomsday began in March 2025, when Marvel Studios announced the cast and a May 1, 2026 date, and Variety reported on May 23, 2025 that the release had moved to December 18, 2026. Disney's film page lists no UK or Australian date.

The writers confirmed are Stephen McFeely and Michael Waldron, with Chris McKenna and Erik Sommers reported by TheWrap. Kevin Feige, Louis D'Esposito and Jonathan Schwartz are the producers, and Box Office Mojo credits Alan Silvestri, who also scored The Avengers, Avengers: Infinity War and Avengers: Endgame, as composer.

Disney's March 26, 2025 announcement named Robert Downey Jr. as Victor von Doom, and its cast list runs to Chris Hemsworth, Vanessa Kirby, Anthony Mackie, Sebastian Stan, Letitia Wright, Paul Rudd, Florence Pugh, Pedro Pascal, Tom Hiddleston, Patrick Stewart and Ian McKellen, among others. Disney's film page also lists Chris Evans. The four leads of The Fantastic 4: First Steps, Pascal, Kirby, Ebon Moss-Bachrach and Joseph Quinn, are all named. Cast, rumors with their status and the Avengers: Doomsday trailer are covered on the next movie and trailer pages.

Who Are the Main Marvel Characters?

Marvel characters

The main Marvel characters start with the six original Avengers, Tony Stark, Steve Rogers, Thor, Bruce Banner, Natasha Romanoff and Clint Barton, and grow to include the heroes and villains added over 34 films. The full Marvel characters page covers them all, and these sixteen have their own pages:

  • Tony Stark, played by Robert Downey Jr. from Iron Man (2008).
  • Steve Rogers, played by Chris Evans from Captain America: The First Avenger.
  • Thor, played by Chris Hemsworth from Thor (2011).
  • Bruce Banner and the Hulk, played by Edward Norton in The Incredible Hulk and by Mark Ruffalo from The Avengers.
  • Natasha Romanoff, played by Scarlett Johansson from Iron Man 2.
  • Clint Barton, Hawkeye, played by Jeremy Renner in The Avengers.
  • Loki, played by Tom Hiddleston from Thor (2011).
  • Thanos, played by Josh Brolin in Avengers: Infinity War.
  • T'Challa, played by Chadwick Boseman from Captain America: Civil War.
  • Stephen Strange, played by Benedict Cumberbatch from Doctor Strange (2016).
  • Carol Danvers, played by Brie Larson in Captain Marvel (2019).
  • Wanda Maximoff, played by Elizabeth Olsen from Avengers: Age of Ultron.
  • Star-Lord (Peter Quill), played by Chris Pratt in Guardians of the Galaxy.
  • Nick Fury, played by Samuel L. Jackson in Iron Man 2 and later films.
  • Bucky Barnes, played by Sebastian Stan from Captain America: The First Avenger.
  • Sam Wilson, Captain America, played by Anthony Mackie from Captain America: The Winter Soldier.

Recasting is rare in this series, but it matters when it happens. Edward Norton played Banner in The Incredible Hulk before Mark Ruffalo took over in The Avengers, and Robert Downey Jr. is listed for Avengers: Doomsday as Victor von Doom rather than Tony Stark. In Captain America: Brave New World, Anthony Mackie leads as Sam Wilson in the Captain America role.
