Who Is Newt in Aliens?
Newt is the child survivor of the colony on LV-426, and she is the only living person the Colonial Marines find when they arrive in Aliens (1986), directed by James Cameron. She is credited simply as Newt, and Carrie Henn plays her, billed second in the cast behind Sigourney Weaver.
Her story begins with someone else's. Ellen Ripley is found drifting in hypersleep after 57 years in space, and her employer, Weyland-Yutani, doubts her account of the alien eggs on LV-426. When contact with the colony that now lives there is lost, Ripley agrees to travel with a team of Colonial Marines, on the condition that the creatures are destroyed. A company man named Burke goes with them, as does the android Bishop.
At the colony the buildings are wrecked and nobody answers. The one person who does turn up is a young girl called Newt. In my reading, she is the point where the film shifts from a straight monster hunt to a story about protecting someone. Newt's Story Arc: From the Colony to the HiveSpoilers
Newt's arc in Aliens moves from a child hiding in the wreckage to the person Ripley refuses to leave behind. The turning point comes in the alien nest, where the Colonial Marines walk into an ambush and most of them die. Their commander, out of his depth, loses his nerve, and Ripley steps in to pull the survivors out. Newt is one of the people she is looking after.
Two threats then close in together. Burke turns out to have wanted live embryos to sell, and the colony's damaged reactor is heading for an explosion. While the group scrambles, the aliens carry Newt away. Ripley goes back by herself, finds the girl in the hive and comes face to face with the queen.
The way out is tight. Ripley, Newt, Hicks and Bishop leave the colony just before it is destroyed, only to find the queen has hidden aboard their ship. Ripley meets her in a power loader and shoves her out through an airlock. The four survivors settle into hypersleep for the journey home, and that is where Aliens leaves Newt. The next film, alien 3, opens on that same sleep.
Newt's Relationships: Ripley, Hicks and Bishop
Newt's most important relationship is with Ripley, and the ending of Aliens treats it as a makeshift family. Ripley is the person who returns for her alone, and the hive rescue is the point where the film makes that bond explicit.
Corporal Hicks is one of the surviving Marines and travels with her in hypersleep at the end. His page is under hicks aliens. Bishop, the android, was badly damaged in the final fight, yet he is still able to help save Newt. His profile is under bishop aliens.
The antagonistic ties are of a different kind. Burke, the company man, wants embryos brought back, and the creatures themselves, led by the alien queen, are the threat that removes Newt from safety. In that sense her relationships divide cleanly: Ripley, Hicks and Bishop protect her, while Burke and the xenomorph put her at risk.
What Happens to Newt in Alien 3?Spoilers
Newt does not survive to the events of Alien 3 (1992), directed by David Fincher, and the film establishes this early. The Sulaco is heading home with Ripley, Newt, Hicks and the damaged Bishop all in hypersleep, but a facehugger has got aboard. A fire on the ship makes the computer eject the escape pod, and the pod crashes on Fiorina 161, a foundry world that holds a small group of violent male prisoners.
Only Ripley survives the crash. The inmates pull her out and the prison doctor, Clemens, treats her. She learns that Newt and Hicks did not survive, and she presses for Newt's body to be autopsied and then cremated, because she fears something came down with her. Later, Bishop is revived and confirms that a facehugger was aboard the pod.
So, the chain of events is the stowaway facehugger, the fire and the ejected pod, and Ripley is the only one left alive at the end of it. The film gives Newt no return. The wider run of events, including Ripley's own end in the furnace, is covered under alien timeline.
Newt's Best Moments in Aliens
In my opinion, Newt works because Aliens places her at the center of three scenes that each change what Ripley is fighting for. It could be argued that these are the moments that explain why she is remembered long after the other colonists are forgotten.
The first is the discovery at the wrecked colony. Everything else there is silence and damage, so a living child changes the stakes before the Marines have even reached the nest. The second is Ripley taking command after the Marine commander panics. Newt is among the people Ripley gets out, and the scene shows leadership from someone who was only supposed to advise.
The third, and the strongest, is Ripley going back alone into the hive. Alien (1979) ended with Ripley and a cat, and Aliens gives her a person to lose. That makes the power loader fight with the queen personal rather than only spectacular. Paradoxically, it also makes Alien 3 harder to watch, because the film removes her within its first act. I would suggest watching the two films back to back to feel how deliberately the saga pays for that earlier warmth.
