The Alien Queen: The Xenomorph Queen in Every Film

The Alien queen is the xenomorph that runs the nest and lays the eggs, and she first appears on screen in Aliens (1986), directed by James Cameron. She returns as an embryo in Alien 3, as a queen removed from a clone and then giving live birth in Alien Resurrection, and as a captive in AVP: Alien vs. Predator.

Who Was the Alien Queen?

The Alien queen is the xenomorph Ripley faces in the hive, and she first appears in Aliens (1986), directed by James Cameron. That film made $183 million worldwide on a $17 million budget, according to The Numbers.

She is absent from Alien (1979), directed by Ridley Scott, where Ripley is hunted by a single creature on the Nostromo. If you are new to the creatures, the xenomorph page covers the adult animal and the xenomorph life cycle page covers how an egg becomes a hunter.

Which Alien movie shows the Queen? Four films do, each in a different way. Aliens (1986) shows her in the hive and on the escape ship. Alien 3 (1992), directed by David Fincher, carries her as an embryo inside Ripley. Alien Resurrection (1997), directed by Jean-Pierre Jeunet, shows a queen removed from a clone who then gives live birth. AVP: Alien vs. Predator (2004), directed by Paul W. S. Anderson, features a captive queen, though that film has its page in the Predator franchise. Alien: Romulus (2024) ends with a human and xenomorph hybrid, not a queen.

For the Alien queen cast, the human leads of Aliens are Sigourney Weaver as Ripley and Carrie Henn as Newt. Anyone looking for an Alien queen figure will find the range on the Alien merchandise page.

The Alien Queen's Story Across the FilmsSpoilers

The queen's story runs through four films, and each one gives her a different job. In Aliens, Ripley joins the Colonial Marines on LV-426, finds the girl Newt in the hive, and faces the queen there. The Marines have by then been ambushed in the nest, and most of them are dead.

How did the Alien queen get on the ship? In Aliens, the queen stows away on the vessel that carries Ripley, Newt, Hicks and Bishop away from the doomed colony, and she attacks the survivors aboard. In Alien 3 the route is different. A facehugger has already got aboard the Sulaco before the escape pod is ejected, and a scan on Fiorina 161 shows that Ripley is carrying an Alien Queen embryo. Ripley realizes that the Weyland-Yutani company wants the creature as a weapon.

Alien Resurrection moves the story forward two hundred years. Scientists aboard the Auriga clone Ripley and remove the queen growing inside her. That queen can later give live birth, a break from the egg laying of the earlier films, and her offspring is a pale, human looking hybrid. In AVP: Alien vs. Predator, the queen is a captive under an Antarctic pyramid. The humans accidentally wake the pyramid, she is freed and she starts laying eggs, while the Predators use the pyramid to breed Xenomorphs as prey for a rite of passage.

The Alien Queen and Ripley, Newt and the Crew

The queen's most important relationship is with Ellen Ripley, and the two meet in three of the four films. In Aliens, Ripley goes back into the hive alone to get Newt, which puts her in front of the queen. In Alien 3, the queen is inside Ripley, and the company's interest in her is the reason Ripley refuses its help. In Alien Resurrection, the queen is taken out of Ripley, and the cloned Ripley 8 keeps alien traits such as acidic blood. See the Ellen Ripley page for her full story.

Newt, the child found alone in the wrecked colony, is the reason Ripley faces the queen at all. Hicks and Bishop are the other survivors who leave LV-426 with them, and Bishop, though badly damaged, is still able to help save Newt. The company man Burke wanted to bring back alien embryos for profit, so he is the human who treats the queen's offspring as a commodity. The Newt, Hicks and Bishop pages cover them.

The phrase Alien queen mother can send readers in the wrong direction. In Alien (1979), Mother is the Nostromo's computer and has no connection to the queen. The only mother link in the series is in Alien Resurrection, where the hybrid born from the queen treats Ripley as its mother.

What Happened to the Alien Queen From Aliens?Spoilers

The Alien queen from Aliens is pushed out of an airlock into space by Ripley, who fights her in a power loader. That ends the threat on the ship, and the four survivors settle into hypersleep for the trip home.

The later films treat the queen as something that can be carried, bred and ended in new ways. In Alien 3, Ripley throws herself into the furnace on Fiorina 161 with the Queen embryo still inside her, which ends both of them and leaves the company with nothing. In Alien Resurrection, the hybrid she gives birth to kills her, and Ripley later opens a small hole in a window with her acidic blood so that the vacuum pulls the hybrid into space. In AVP: Alien vs. Predator, Lex and the young Predator Scar defeat the queen on the surface by dragging her over a cliff with a chain tied to a water tank, and Scar is fatally wounded in the fight.

So, in answer to the usual question, the queen does not survive any of her four appearances.

Best Alien Queen Moments, Ranked by Impact

In my opinion, the best queen scene is the power loader fight at the end of Aliens, because it turns the film's whole argument into a single physical contest. Ripley is the mother who went back for a child, and the queen is the mother who followed her onto the ship. It could be argued that the stowaway detail matters more than it seems, since it makes the queen's pursuit read as deliberate, though no film states how intelligent she is.

My second pick is the hive confrontation, where Ripley finds Newt and faces the queen directly. It works because the Marines have already been ambushed in the nest and most of them killed, so the audience understands what the room means before anyone speaks.

Third, Alien Resurrection gives the queen her strangest moment, when she gives live birth and the hybrid kills her. Perhaps it is the least comfortable scene of the four. That being said, Alien 3 deserves credit for the most economical use of the idea, because the Queen embryo never needs to appear on screen for the film to be about her.

If you are new to the queen, start with Aliens (1986), then follow the order on the Alien movies in order page.
