Who Is Rain in Alien: Romulus?
Rain is a young miner on a dark, company run colony world, and she is the central character of Alien: Romulus, played by Cailee Spaeny. The film credits her only as "Rain", although searches often add the surname Carradine, and Spaeny is billed first in the cast, ahead of David Jonsson, who plays her android brother Andy.
Her situation is set up quickly. Her work contract is extended against her will, which blocks her hope of leaving the colony, so she teams up with Andy and a group of friends that includes her ex Tyler and his pregnant sister Kay. Together they plan to board a derelict station in orbit and take its cryosleep pods for the long trip to a better planet. That planet bans androids, a detail that weighs on both Rain and Andy.
How old is she? No age for Rain appears in the published plot material for the film, so any specific number is a fan estimate and not a stated fact. The same caution applies to the surname Carradine, which the credits do not print.
Alien: Romulus (2024), directed by Fede Álvarez, runs 119 minutes and opened in the US on 16 August 2024, according to Box Office Mojo. In story order it sits between Alien (1979) and Aliens, and it opens with a probe recovering a strange cocoon from the wreck of the Nostromo. If you want every film and where each one sits, the Alien movies in order page lays out both orders, and the Alien characters index covers the rest of the cast.

Rain's Story Arc in Alien: RomulusSpoilers
Rain's arc runs from a worker with no say over her own future to the one person who can still make decisions when the plan falls apart. It starts with the colony's decision to extend her contract, which shuts the one exit she was counting on. From there she commits to a gamble: a raid on the drifting Renaissance station, where the cryosleep pods might buy passage to a better planet for her, Andy and their friends.
The raid goes wrong almost at once. A lockdown on the station releases facehuggers, and Navarro becomes the first host. Rain's own mistake follows. She wants Andy to get through the sealed doors, so she fits him with a chip taken from the damaged science android Rook. It works as a key, but it also rewrites what Andy puts first, and he begins to side with the company. Through Rook, the group learns what the station's scientists had been doing with the Nostromo creature: they turned facehugger material into Z-01, a fluid able to rewrite human DNA.
The middle of the film strips the group down. Navarro dies when the chestburster emerges, the ship is wrecked, and the creature that hatches hunts them fast. Bjorn is lost to its acid blood, and Kay is dragged away. Andy leaves to chase the Z-01 on company orders. Rain and the rest track the creature to its nest and bring back Kay, who is hurt but still holding a vial of the fluid. Tyler pays with his life to cover Rain and Kay.
After that, Rain stops following and starts directing. She puts Andy's original programming back, then turns off the gravity so she can shoot at the swarm without its acid eating through the hull. Andy kills the xenomorph that came from Navarro, and the two escape in the ship while the planet's rings tear the station apart.
Rain, Andy and the Group: Her Relationships
Rain's most important relationship is with Andy, the android played by David Jonsson, whom she treats as her brother. Everything else in the film bends around that bond, because the plan to leave for a planet that bans androids puts the two of them at odds with the future they are chasing.
The chip from Rook is where that bond is tested. Rain installs it with good intentions, Andy's priorities shift toward the company, and she later has to restore his original programming to get him back. Rook is performed by Daniel Betts (facial and vocal performance), with Ian Holm credited for facial and vocal reference, which ties the character to the android Ash of Alien (1979).
The human relationships are shorter but sharper. Tyler (Archie Renaux) is her ex, and he gives his life to protect Rain and Kay. Kay (Isabela Merced) is Tyler's pregnant sister, and her fate becomes the last threat of the film. Bjorn (Spike Fearn) is killed by the hatched creature's acid blood, and Navarro (Aileen Wu) dies when the chestburster from the facehugger that impregnated her emerges.
There is also a parallel with the saga's older survivors. Rain shares a position with Ellen Ripley, who in Alien (1979) is the last crew member standing, and her bond with Andy echoes the android characters covered on the Alien androids page, such as Ash and Bishop.
What Happens to Rain at the End of Alien: Romulus?Spoilers
Rain survives Alien: Romulus and ends the film in cryosleep with Andy, heading for the planet they hoped to reach. The last stretch is not safe, though. Kay injects herself with Z-01 and gives birth to a human and xenomorph hybrid, which kills her and disables Andy.
Rain then throws the hybrid out into the planet's rings, where it breaks apart. She and Andy set course for the new planet and enter cryosleep, so the film ends on a quiet note with the company's experiments left behind.
Will she return? There is no release date for a second Alien: Romulus film. TheWrap reported on 23 October 2026 that 20th Century Studios has a new Alien film in early development, with Ridley Scott producing and Aaron Guzikowski writing, no director attached and no date. That report does not mention a Romulus sequel, so whether Rain comes back is unconfirmed. Any news on a follow-up sits on the Alien Romulus 2 page.
Best Moments: Where Rain Earns the Film
In my opinion, Rain's best scene is the decision to cut the gravity, because it turns the creature's acid blood, which has already killed Bjorn, into a problem she can plan around. By cutting the gravity she can fire on the swarm without acid damaging the hull, and the plan rewards viewers who have been paying attention to how the creatures behave.
A second moment I rate highly is her decision to restore Andy's original programming. It could be argued that the film's real drama sits there, not in the creature, since Rain has to undo a mistake she made with the best intentions. The chip scene and the repair scene make a pair, and the second one lands harder for it.
The third is the final ejection of the hybrid into the planet's rings. Perhaps the nicest thing about it is the symmetry with Ripley, who in Alien (1979) throws her creature out through an airlock and then records a log before hibernation. Rain closes her film the same way, with the threat gone and the crew reduced to two survivors going to sleep.
For background, production started on 9 March in Budapest, according to Animation World Network, and the film premiered in Los Angeles on 12 August 2024 at the TCL Chinese Theatre. If you are new to the series, start with Alien (1979) before returning to this one, and then continue with Aliens.
