What Is Batman Begins About?

Batman Begins is an origin story that follows Bruce Wayne from a childhood tragedy to the night he first puts on the cowl. As a boy, Bruce falls into a well in Gotham and develops a deep fear of bats. His parents are later shot dead outside an opera house by a mugger, and he grows up with guilt and rage, raised by the family butler, Alfred.

As an adult, Bruce plans to take revenge on the killer, but a crime boss's hitman silences the man first. He then leaves Gotham and spends years among criminals abroad. In a prison in Bhutan, a man named Ducard recruits him into a secretive group called the League of Shadows. That is where the training begins, and it is a long way from the gadget heavy Gotham of Batman & Robin (1997), which makes this film a fresh start for the Batman movies.

What Songs Are in Batman Begins? Soundtrack and Score

Hans Zimmer composed the score for Batman Begins (2005), and the album "Batman Begins" was released by WaterTower Music on June 14, 2005. It is a score album with 12 tracks, so it collects Zimmer's orchestral writing for the film rather than a run of pop songs.

Which songs are in Batman Begins? Three pieces of existing music are credited alongside the score, and they come from the classical side of the catalog rather than from the charts:

  • "Folletto!...Folletto" by Norman Treigle, the Ambrosian Opera Chorus, the London Symphony Orchestra and Julius Rudel
  • "Happy Birthday to You" by the Cavendish String Quartet
  • "Divertimento in D" by the Cavendish String Quartet

That mix covers an opera recording and two string quartet performances, which makes a quiet contrast with the weight of Zimmer's score. If you want the score on its own, the "Batman Begins" album is the one to look for, since it is the only release credited to the film's music here.

For the composers and key songs across every Batman film, the Batman soundtrack page lines them up.

Batman Begins Plot Explained, Scene by SceneSpoilers

The full plot of Batman Begins runs in three movements: a revenge that goes wrong, a training that goes too far, and a Gotham that has to be saved from its own water supply. After the murder of his parents, the killer, Joe Chill, testifies against the mob boss Carmine Falcone and is freed. Bruce plans to shoot him, but a hitman kills Chill first, and Bruce's friend Rachel Dawes tells him that revenge is not justice. Bruce goes abroad and ends up in the Bhutan prison, where Ducard recruits him into the League of Shadows, led by Ra's al Ghul. Ducard trains him and helps him face his fear, but Bruce refuses to execute a criminal and learns the League wants to destroy Gotham. He burns their temple down, and Ra's dies in the collapse while Bruce saves Ducard.

Back in Gotham, Bruce takes control of Wayne Enterprises and gets prototype gear from Lucius Fox, including an armored vehicle called the Tumbler. He builds a base in the cave under Wayne Manor and begins operating as Batman, while playing the part of a careless playboy in public. Batman hands Rachel evidence that brings down Falcone, but the corrupt psychiatrist Dr. Crane, who is also the Scarecrow, uses a fear inducing drug on Falcone and on Batman. Alfred and Fox save Bruce with an antidote.

Then comes the turn. Ducard appears at Bruce's birthday party and reveals himself as the real Ra's al Ghul. He plans to vaporize Gotham's water supply with a stolen microwave emitter, which will spread Crane's toxin as a gas and set off mass panic. The League burns Wayne Manor and releases the Arkham inmates into the Narrows district. Batman fights Ra's on the monorail carrying the emitter, and Gordon destroys the track with the Tumbler so the train crashes. Batman escapes and Ra's is killed.

Batman Begins Release Date, Premiere and Box Office

Batman Begins premiered on June 6, 2005 at Mann's Chinese Theatre in Hollywood, California, and reached US theaters on June 15, 2005. The UK release followed on June 16 and Australia on June 17. The film is rated PG-13 in the US, 12A in the UK and M in Australia, with a runtime of 140 minutes.

Is Batman Begins a hit or a flop? By the numbers, it earned back its cost comfortably. Box Office Mojo lists a $150 million budget against about $207 million domestic and $169 million international, for roughly $376 million worldwide, which is about two and a half times the budget. Those totals sit below the later Nolan films, but this was the first Batman film after Batman & Robin (1997), which grossed about $238 million worldwide. For every film side by side, see the Batman box office page.

Batman Begins Ending ExplainedSpoilers

The ending of Batman Begins closes Bruce's origin and then deliberately leaves one door open for the sequel. Gotham is saved and Batman is seen as a protector by much of the city. Rachel tells Bruce she cannot be with him until Gotham no longer needs Batman, which is the film's honest answer to the question it asked in the first act: Bruce wanted justice, not revenge, and the price is a normal life. Bruce regains control of Wayne Enterprises, removes Earle and makes Fox the head of the company, so the resources behind the cowl now sit in friendly hands.

Then there is the last scene. Gordon, now a lieutenant, shows Batman the Bat-Signal and mentions a new criminal who leaves a Joker playing card at his crimes. Batman says he will look into it and leaves. In my opinion, the card is a smarter tease than a full villain reveal, because it names no actor and promises nothing beyond escalation. It could be argued that the whole film sets up the Joker as the opposite of everything Ra's wanted: where the League planned to destroy Gotham, the Joker would simply laugh at it. That idea is paid off in The Dark Knight (2008), with Heath Ledger in the role.

Compare this with Batman (1989), where the Joker (Jack Nicholson) is a main antagonist and Batman is already a rumor around Gotham. Here the Joker never appears on screen, and the series holds him back for the sequel. For how the story continues, see the Batman timeline.

Where Was Batman Begins Filmed?

Batman Begins was filmed mainly in Iceland and England, with a Chicago unit for the Tumbler chase. Principal photography began in March 2004.

  • Iceland: the Vatnajokull glacier area stood in for Bhutan and the Himalayas, and a sword fight was shot on real ice.
  • Cardington, England: Gotham City and the Narrows were built inside a former airship hangar, with buildings lit from within.
  • Shepperton Studios, England: the Batcave, Wayne Manor interiors and monastery courtyard sets.
  • Mentmore House, England: the exterior of Wayne Manor.
  • Chicago, USA: the Tumbler chase, including Lower Wacker Drive.

The split matters for how the film feels. The League scenes get genuine cold and open landscape, while Gotham is a constructed, physical city that crews could move through and light. That practical approach is part of why the film sits so differently beside the more stylized sets of Batman Forever.

Batman Begins Trivia

These production details from American Cinematographer and the film's credits show how much of Batman Begins was built for real.

  • Principal photography began in March 2004 at Iceland's Vatnajokull glacier, which stood in for Bhutan.
  • Gotham City was built inside a former 1917 airship hangar at Cardington, England, with buildings lit from within.
  • Five working Tumbler Batmobiles were built, and the Chicago chase was staged with practical car stunts inspired by The French Connection and Bullitt.
  • The film was shot in anamorphic 2.40:1 on Kodak Vision2 stock and skipped a digital intermediate.
  • Nolan declined to use a second unit and shot inserts himself.
  • Cinematographer Wally Pfister operated the main camera himself and had about 16 weeks of prep.
  • The score was composed by Hans Zimmer and James Newton Howard.
