Luke Hobbs Story Arc: From Hunter to AllySpoilers

Luke Hobbs moves from antagonist to ally across the Fast and Furious saga, and the turn happens inside Fast Five. He chases Dominic Toretto (Dom), Brian O'Conner and Mia Toretto through Rio, his own team is wiped out in an ambush, and he and local officer Elena Neves then join the heist on the police station vault. Hobbs kills the crime boss Hernan Reyes, and the vault is empty when he opens it, so at the end he gives Dom and Brian a head start. A post credit scene in Washington, D.C. has Monica Fuentes hand him a file with a recent photo of Letty Ortiz.

In Fast & Furious 6, Luke Hobbs asks Dom's crew for help catching Owen Shaw and offers full pardons in return. He shows Dom evidence that Letty is alive and working for Shaw. When the crash on the runway ends, Hobbs keeps his promise and the crew is pardoned.

In Furious 7, Luke Hobbs is attacked by Deckard Shaw at a government office. He later leaves the hospital to take out a drone with an ambulance, and he finishes the fight with Mose Jakande's helicopter by shooting the grenades left aboard.

In The Fate of the Furious, Luke Hobbs is arrested and jailed after the Berlin job. Mr. Nobody frees him and Deckard Shaw so they can track down Dom and Cipher, and at the end Hobbs turns down a government job to spend time with his daughter.

Fast & Furious Presents: Hobbs & Shaw (2019) makes him a lead. He reluctantly teams up with Deckard Shaw and Hattie Shaw against the cybernetically enhanced Brixton, and the trail takes them to Chernobyl and then to Hobbs's family home in Samoa. His brother Jonah Hobbs repairs the device, and the Hobbs family fights off Brixton's forces. Hobbs and Deckard bring down Brixton's helicopter and defeat him.

Luke Hobbs Relationships: Dom, Deckard Shaw and Family

Luke Hobbs has three key relationships in the saga: the Toretto crew, the Shaw family, and his own family. He starts as the pursuer of Dominic Toretto (Vin Diesel) and Brian O'Conner (Paul Walker), then relies on them in Fast & Furious 6, where Mia Toretto (Jordana Brewster) is also drawn into the fight against Owen Shaw (Luke Evans).

The link with Deckard Shaw, played by Jason Statham, runs from enemies to partners. Deckard attacks Hobbs in Furious 7, the two are freed from prison together in The Fate of the Furious, and in Fast & Furious Presents: Hobbs & Shaw they share the lead. Deckard's sister Hattie Shaw (Vanessa Kirby) and mother Queenie Shaw (Helen Mirren) widen that circle.

Hobbs's own family appears in Hobbs & Shaw, where his brother Jonah Hobbs (Cliff Curtis) helps repair the device in Samoa. His daughter is mentioned at the end of The Fate of the Furious and appears in a post credit scene of Hobbs & Shaw. Luke Hobbs has no wife named in the films.

What Happened to Luke Hobbs? Fate and Current StatusSpoilers

Luke Hobbs is alive as of his latest appearance, the Fast X (2023) post credit scene. He also does not die in Furious 7: he survives the fight with Mose Jakande's helicopter, and he survives the later films as well.

The Fast X scene comes from the film directed by Louis Leterrier. In it, Hobbs leads agents into an abandoned theater, and Dante Reyes (Jason Momoa) phones him to name him as his next target. Hobbs replies that he is easy to find and crushes the phone in his hand. That scene leaves his status open.

Luke Hobbs does not appear in F9 (2021), and no reason is given for his absence. He has not been confirmed for the next film, Fast Forever, which Universal dated for March 17, 2028 (see Fast Forever).

Best Luke Hobbs Moments, Ranked by How the Job Gets Done

Luke Hobbs's best moments are the scenes where he solves a problem with whatever is in reach: the Fast Five vault chase, the Furious 7 ambulance, the Samoa stand in Fast & Furious Presents: Hobbs & Shaw and the Fast X phone crush. In my opinion, the order below follows how much each scene tells you about him, and four stand out.

First, Fast Five: the crew drags a vault through Rio behind two cars, Hobbs and Elena Neves join the job, and Hobbs kills Hernan Reyes. When he opens the vault it is empty, because the crew swapped the contents with a trash truck, and he lets Dom and Brian go with a head start. Perhaps this is the moment he stops being a villain.

Second, Furious 7: Hobbs leaves the hospital and uses an ambulance to take out a drone. The tool is a rescue vehicle, and the target is a military drone, which is the kind of mismatch the saga does best.

Third, Hobbs & Shaw: the family stand in Samoa, where the Hobbs family sets traps and fights off Brixton's forces. It gives him a home and people to protect.

Fourth, Fast X: he crushes a phone in his hand after Dante names him a target. It lasts only seconds, but, as a reintroduction, it says everything about him.
