Mia Toretto in Fast and Furious: Who She Is and Who Plays Her

Mia Toretto is the sister of Dominic Toretto (Dom), and Jordana Brewster plays her in all seven of her films. She first appears in The Fast and the Furious (2001), directed by Rob Cohen, where Dom runs a crew and a family cafe and Mia sits right at the center of that household.

Why does she matter to the saga? She is the person who ties Brian O'Conner to the Toretto family, and that link drives a large part of the series. Jordana Brewster is credited as Mia Toretto in seven films: The Fast and the Furious, Fast & Furious (2009), Fast Five, Fast & Furious 6, Furious 7, F9 and Fast X.

Mia Toretto's arc runs from Dominic Toretto's sister and Brian O'Conner's love interest in 2001 to a mother whose family is hunted in Fast X. In The Fast and the Furious, undercover cop Brian grows close to Dom's sister Mia while he works his way into the street racing scene. She is billed fourth, after Paul Walker, Vin Diesel and Michelle Rodriguez.

She is back in Fast & Furious (2009), directed by Justin Lin, again billed fourth. The big step comes in Fast Five (2011), also directed by Lin, where she is billed third. Brian and Mia break Dom out of a prison bus, the three flee to Rio de Janeiro, and Brian and Mia join a train heist that goes wrong. Mia then tells Brian she is pregnant.

In Fast & Furious 6 (2013), Owen Shaw's people kidnap Mia, and Owen Shaw uses her to force a swap and escape. Mia appears in Furious 7 (2015), directed by James Wan, billed seventh, in a film that opens with Brian getting used to being a father.

In F9 (2021), Dom and Mia rescue Jakob Toretto, Dom's brother. In Fast X (2023), directed by Louis Leterrier, Jakob saves Mia and Little B, Dom's son, in Los Angeles.

Mia Toretto is Dominic Toretto's sister, Brian O'Conner's partner and the mother of Brian's child. Those three ties explain most of what she does on screen.

With Dom, the bond is family first. She helps free him from the prison bus in Fast Five, and she is with him when the crew rescues his brother Jakob in F9. With Brian, the relationship starts in the first film, where he falls for her while undercover, and carries through Fast Five, where she tells him she is pregnant. By Furious 7 Brian is a father, and in the F9 ending he joins the family barbecue at Dom's home.

The films do not show Brian and Mia marrying. They do show a child, a partnership that lasts across the saga, and a place at the family table.

Jakob, Dom's brother, ends up saving Mia and Little B in Fast X. Letty Ortiz, who is with Dom on their honeymoon in The Fate of the Furious, is covered at letty ortiz fast and furious, and Brian has his own page at brian o'conner fast and furious. Jakob is at jakob toretto fast and furious.

Mia is alive at the end of her last credited appearance, Fast X (2023). In that film Jakob saves her and Little B in Los Angeles, and the movie ends on a cliffhanger that leaves many characters' fates open.

The next film, Fast Forever, is dated by Universal for March 17, 2028 (TheWrap), and the date could still change because filming has not started. Her return is not confirmed. Check fast forever for current status.

Mia Toretto's best moment, in this site's opinion, is the Fast Five prison bus break, where she and Brian O'Conner free Dominic Toretto. It shows what she does best: she keeps the family moving, and the whole Rio story rolls out from that one extraction. It also pays off the ending of Fast & Furious, which closes with Dom sentenced to life without parole and Brian and his allies moving to stop the prison bus. Fast Five starts exactly there.

The production context shows how far the series scaled up around her. Fast Five carried a $125 million budget against $85 million for Fast & Furious, and it grossed $644 million worldwide (Box Office Mojo). Universal chose Puerto Rico for the shoot in July and August 2010, and the Rio scenes were filmed there, with about 60 cars on the schedule, before production moved to Atlanta (Primera Hora, Omelete). Mia is billed third in Fast Five, her highest billing in seven films, so the film puts her closest to the center of the story. The train heist she joins with Brian is the first step in that run, and it goes wrong when the cars turn out to belong to the crime boss Reyes.

Mia Toretto's second-best moment, again an opinion, is her kidnapping in Fast & Furious 6, where Owen Shaw uses her to force a swap and escape. Compare it with the first film. In The Fast and the Furious she is a cafe household's heart and a love interest for undercover Brian. Here she is the lever a villain pulls on Dom, in a film with a $160 million budget and a plot built around a Spain highway chase, a cargo plane and Letty's lost memory. The scene shows how much Shaw thinks she is worth.

Her third-best moment is the F9 rescue of Jakob Toretto alongside Dominic Toretto. The scene matters because Mia is there as family when Dom is deciding how much to forgive. It also echoes the first film, where Brian hands Dom the keys to his Supra so he can escape. In F9, Dom hands Jakob his car keys so he can get away from custody, and the film then closes on a family barbecue that Brian joins.

For her most active stretch, start with Fast Five and then jump to F9.
