Who Is Dominic Toretto in Fast and Furious?
Dominic Toretto, usually called Dom, is a respected street racer who leads a crew and runs a family cafe in Los Angeles. Vin Diesel plays him, and he is billed second in The Fast and the Furious (2001), directed by Rob Cohen, behind Paul Walker as Brian O'Conner.
In that first film, Brian goes undercover in the racing scene to find the hijackers behind a string of big rig thefts. He starts with the local racers and meets Dom, a crew leader with a rival in Johnny Tran and a sister named Mia. Dominic Toretto is the only credited name on the cast lists, and the films shorten it to Dom.
The billing tells the story of the saga. Diesel is second in 2001, then first in Fast & Furious (2009), Fast Five, Fast & Furious 6, Furious 7, The Fate of the Furious, F9 and Fast X. Between the first film and the fourth, the character shrinks to a cameo. Dom is absent from 2 Fast 2 Furious, where Brian carries the story with Roman Pearce. He turns up only in the last scene of The Fast and the Furious: Tokyo Drift, arriving in a Plymouth Road Runner to challenge Sean Boswell and saying that Han was family.
The shorts fill the gap. Diesel plays Dom in The Turbo Charged Prelude for 2 Fast 2 Furious, a seven minute short, and in Los Bandoleros, a 20 minute short that Diesel directed himself. Los Bandoleros was included on the DVD release and sets up the Robin Hood style gasoline tanker job that opens Fast & Furious, with Dom in the Dominican Republic meeting Han, Tego and Santos. For where each film sits in the saga, see fast and furious movies in order.
The scale around Dom has changed enormously. The 2001 film cost $38 million and earned about $213 million worldwide. Fast X carried a budget of $340 million. Dom is the one constant through that growth, and the films keep returning to the same traits: loyalty to his crew, a rule that family comes first, and a car as the way he settles an argument.

What Is Dominic Toretto's Story Arc?Spoilers
Dominic Toretto's arc runs from outlaw racer to head of an international crew that works alongside governments. The shift happens in stages, and each stage is tied to a specific film.
The Fast and the Furious (2001): the local boss. Dom's world is small. He leads Letty, Vince, Leon and Jesse, runs the family cafe and has a feud with Johnny Tran. When Brian's cover is blown after a hijacking goes wrong and Vince is badly hurt, Dom and the crew learn Brian is a cop. Jesse is later killed by Tran's gang, and Dom hunts Tran down while Brian shoots him. The film ends on a quarter mile race across a railroad crossing, where a truck hits and wrecks Dom's car. Brian hands him the keys to his Supra so he can escape.
Los Bandoleros and Fast & Furious (2009): the fugitive. Dom is in the Dominican Republic after the first film. In Fast & Furious he leaves Letty behind to keep her safe from the law, then hears she has apparently been murdered and returns to Los Angeles to find out who did it. The clue is a green Ford Torino. Dom and Brian clash, then work together, and Dom is convicted and sentenced to life without parole. This is the darkest point of his arc: the crew leader is now an inmate on a prison bus.
Fast Five: the planner. Brian and Mia free Dom from the bus, and the three flee to Rio de Janeiro. The train heist that goes wrong, a frame job for murder and the pursuit by Luke Hobbs lead Dom to build a crew of old friends to steal about $100 million of Hernan Reyes's money from a police station vault. Universal chose Puerto Rico to stand in for Rio, with a July and August 2010 shoot and about 60 cars, and the production later moved to Atlanta. The film cost $125 million and earned about $644 million worldwide, more than the $360 million of Fast & Furious. From here Dom is a strategist, not just a driver.
Fast & Furious 6 and Furious 7: the soldier for hire. Luke Hobbs offers pardons if Dom's crew will help catch Owen Shaw. Dom finds Letty alive but with no memory of him. The finale ties Dom's vehicles to a huge cargo plane on a runway. In Furious 7, Dom flies to Tokyo to bring Han's body home after Deckard Shaw kills him, then works with Mr. Nobody (Kurt Russell) to rescue the hacker Ramsey in exchange for help catching Deckard. The film had a $190 million budget, and it ends with Dom remembering his years with Brian and the two parting ways on the road, a farewell to the character and to Paul Walker.
The Fate of the Furious: the betrayer. On his honeymoon in Havana, Dom wins a street race to clear his cousin Fernando's debt. Then Cipher shows him that she holds his former partner, agent Elena Neves, and their baby son. Dom betrays his crew and helps steal an EMP device in Berlin. He later takes the God's Eye program, then steals a nuclear launch case in New York, where Cipher's enforcer Connor Rhodes kills Elena in front of him. It is the only film where Dom is the antagonist for most of the running time.
F9 and Fast X: the family man pulled back in. F9 opens with Dom retired with Letty and his son, and the flashbacks to the 1989 track crash that killed his father, Jack Toretto, explain the split with Jakob. In Fast X, Dante Reyes, the son of the drug lord Dom's family took down years earlier, hunts him for revenge. Dom's response is no longer to run. It is to rebuild the family around him.
Who Is in Dominic Toretto's Family?
Dom's family is both blood relatives and crew, and the films treat the two as one group. His closest ties run to Letty, Mia, Brian and Jakob, with a wider circle that includes Hobbs, Deckard Shaw and his son.
Did Dom marry Letty? Yes. Dom and Letty Ortiz are on their honeymoon in Havana when The Fate of the Furious begins, and Letty is his wife.
Does Dominic Toretto have a son? Yes. Dom has a son, Brian, called Little B, born to Dom and his former partner, agent Elena Neves. Cipher holds the baby over Dom in The Fate of the Furious, and Dom names him Brian at the end of that film. In F9 and Fast X, Little B lives with Dom and Letty.
Letty Ortiz. Letty Ortiz is Dom's wife, his partner since The Fast and the Furious (2001) and the reason he returns to Los Angeles in Fast & Furious (2009). In Fast & Furious 6 she is alive but has lost her memory, and Dom has to confront a woman who does not know him. See Letty Ortiz.
Brian O'Conner. Brian starts as the undercover cop who gets close to the crew and ends up giving Dom his Supra keys. He later frees Dom from the prison bus. See Brian O'Conner.
Mia Toretto. Mia is Dom's sister, and she joins Brian in freeing Dom in Fast Five. See Mia Toretto.
Jakob Toretto. Jakob is Dom's estranged brother, played by John Cena. Dom blames him for their father Jack Toretto's death in the 1989 crash, and the two make peace in F9. See Jakob Toretto.
Han Lue. Han joins the crew in the Dominican Republic and is killed by Deckard Shaw in Furious 7. See Han Lue.
Luke Hobbs and Deckard Shaw. Hobbs hunts Dom in Fast Five and later becomes an ally. Deckard starts as a revenge seeker and is welcomed into the family at the end of The Fate of the Furious. See Luke Hobbs and Deckard Shaw.
Cipher and Dante Reyes. Cipher forces Dom to betray his crew, and Dante hunts him in Fast X. See Cipher and Dante Reyes.
The same pattern repeats in every pairing: Dom's enemies become relatives. Hobbs goes from hunter to ally in Fast Five. Deckard goes from the man who killed Han to a welcomed member of the family. Jakob goes from the brother Dom forced out of Los Angeles to the man Dom lets go free. For a wider map of these ties, see the family tree.
What Happens to Dominic Toretto After Fast X?Spoilers
Dominic Toretto's fate after Fast X is unresolved. The film ends with Dom driving off a dam with Little B while Dante Reyes sets off the explosives he planted there, and it does not show the outcome.
The cliffhanger is wider than Dom. Roman, Tej, Ramsey and Han are in a plane that Dante has shot down. In Antarctica, Gisele Yashar, thought dead, emerges from a submarine and rescues Letty and Cipher. A scene during the credits shows Luke Hobbs leading agents into an abandoned theater, where Dante phones him, names him as his next target, and Hobbs answers that he is easy to find before crushing the phone in his hand. Earlier in the film, Jakob sacrifices himself to stop the mercenaries chasing Little B, so the stakes for Dom's family are real. The character status is best read as alive, with the outcome of the dam scene still to be shown.
The next chapter is Fast Forever. Universal dated it for March 17, 2028, as reported by Variety and TheWrap on January 30, 2026. Vin Diesel told Variety Australia on August 18, 2026 that shooting starts in December 2026. Louis Leterrier directed Fast X, but no director has been officially confirmed for Fast Forever. A rumor from The Insneider, relayed by Film Stories on October 8, 2026 and unconfirmed, claims there is no finished script, that Leterrier is no longer directing and that filming may not start until early 2028. If that rumor were true, it would put the March 2028 date at risk. Treat it as a rumor until the studio says otherwise. For the latest on dates and trailers, see fast forever and the trailers page.
This is not the first time the saga has left Dom in doubt. Fast & Furious (2009) ends with Dom sentenced to life without parole and Brian chasing the prison bus, and Fast Five opens with the rescue. The 2001 film ends with Dom on the run after the railroad crossing crash. Each earlier cliffhanger resolved in the next film with Dom alive, which is a pattern but not a guarantee about Fast Forever.
What Are Dominic Toretto's Best Moments?
Dominic Toretto's best scenes are the Rio vault drag in Fast Five, the helicopter crash in Furious 7 and the missile lure in The Fate of the Furious. This is opinion, and I rank them by how clearly the plan can be followed step by step.
1. The vault drag in Fast Five. It is the franchise's cleanest heist plan. Dom's crew tears a vault out of a Rio police station and drags it through the streets behind two cars, with Luke Hobbs and Elena Neves now on their side. The trick is the swap: the crew replaces the vault's contents with a trash truck's load, so the vault is empty when Hobbs opens it. Compare it with the 2001 hijackings, which were a single truck on a road. Here the target is a building, the road is a city and the getaway is part of the plan. Hobbs then lets Dom and Brian go with a head start, and the film closes on a beach race between the two of them.
2. The helicopter crash in Furious 7. After Dom defeats Deckard Shaw in the Los Angeles fight, Mose Jakande turns on both of them. Dom crashes his car into Jakande's helicopter, and Hobbs finishes the job by shooting the grenades left aboard. Compare the cargo plane in Fast & Furious 6, where the crew tethers the plane to their vehicles to stop it taking off. Both scenes use cars against aircraft, but the Furious 7 version puts Dom's own car in the collision.
3. The missile lure in The Fate of the Furious. Cipher fires a homing missile at Dom's Charger. Dom lures it into the Russian submarine, which is destroyed. It is the payoff for the film's central reversal: the man who betrayed his crew uses his own car to save them.
4. The key handoff in F9. A quieter pick is F9, where Dom hands Jakob Toretto his car keys so he can get away from custody and finally forgives him. It echoes the 2001 ending, when Brian gave Dom the keys to his Supra at the railroad crossing. In both scenes a set of car keys carries the forgiveness.
5. The last scene of Tokyo Drift. Dom arrives in a Plymouth Road Runner to challenge Sean Boswell and says Han was family. It is the shortest scene on this list and the one that stitched the third film back into the saga, because Tokyo Drift sits after Furious 7 in story order.
