Fast and Furious Characters: Who Is Who in the Saga

The main characters in Fast and Furious are the Toretto family and the crew built around it, led by Dominic Toretto (Vin Diesel) with Brian O'Conner (Paul Walker), Letty Ortiz (Michelle Rodriguez) and Mia Toretto (Jordana Brewster). All four appear in The Fast and the Furious (2001), directed by Rob Cohen, which starts as an undercover police job and finishes with a quarter mile race across a railroad crossing. Later films added specialists, rivals and relatives such as Roman Pearce, Han Lue, Luke Hobbs and Deckard Shaw.

Spoilers follow for deaths, returns and betrayals in the main saga up to Fast X (2023), directed by Louis Leterrier, so skip the later sections if you still have films to watch. If you want the right viewing sequence first, start with Fast and Furious movies in order.

Dominic Toretto is played by Vin Diesel, Brian O'Conner by Paul Walker, Letty Ortiz by Michelle Rodriguez and Mia Toretto by Jordana Brewster, and each of the 14 major roles debuts in a specific film, from The Fast and the Furious (2001) to Fast X (2023).

Vin Diesel is billed first as Dominic Toretto in seven of the ten main saga films, which is why the series reads as Dominic Toretto's story even when the plots travel from Los Angeles to Rio to the edge of space. The full actor and director breakdown is on the Fast and Furious cast page.

Dominic Toretto's crew (Dom's crew) is the circle of family and friends around him: Letty Ortiz, Mia Toretto, Brian O'Conner, Roman Pearce, Tej Parker, Han Lue, Gisele Yashar and Ramsey, with Luke Hobbs as an ally. Roman Pearce and Tej Parker arrive in 2 Fast 2 Furious (2003), where Brian O'Conner insists on recruiting his childhood friend Roman Pearce, and both return for the Rio heist crew in Fast Five (2011).

Han Lue debuts in The Fast and the Furious: Tokyo Drift (2006), where he teaches Sean Boswell to drift, and Gisele Yashar first appears in Fast & Furious (2009). Luke Hobbs enters Fast Five as the federal agent sent to hunt Dominic Toretto, Brian O'Conner and Mia Toretto, then joins the Rio heist, and he later shares the lead of the spin-off Fast & Furious Presents: Hobbs & Shaw (2019), directed by David Leitch. Ramsey is the hacker who built the God's Eye tracking program, and the crew rescues her in Furious 7 (2015).

The saga's main antagonists include Owen Shaw, Deckard Shaw, Cipher, Jakob Toretto and Dante Reyes, and several of them end up on the crew's side. Owen Shaw (Luke Evans) leads a team of mercenary drivers in Fast & Furious 6 (2013), directed by Justin Lin. His older brother Deckard Shaw (Jason Statham) comes after the crew for revenge in Furious 7, and by the end of The Fate of the Furious the family welcomes him.

Cipher (Charlize Theron) is the cyberterrorist who forces Dominic Toretto to turn on his crew in The Fate of the Furious. Jakob Toretto (John Cena), Dominic Toretto's estranged brother, drives the plot of F9, and Dante Reyes (Jason Momoa) hunts Dominic Toretto for revenge in Fast X as the son of a drug lord the family took down years earlier. Earlier films gave Dominic Toretto other foes, including Johnny Tran (Rick Yune) in The Fast and the Furious (2001) and Carter Verone (Cole Hauser) in 2 Fast 2 Furious (2003); Mose Jakande (Djimon Hounsou) is the Furious 7 (2015) villain alongside Deckard Shaw.

Mr. Nobody (Kurt Russell), Little Nobody (Scott Eastwood), Elena Neves (Elsa Pataky), Queenie Shaw (Helen Mirren) and Sean Boswell (Lucas Black) are the supporting players who recur most. Mr. Nobody is the intelligence operative who recruits the crew in Furious 7 (2015), and Little Nobody first appears in The Fate of the Furious (2017). Elena Neves appears from Fast Five onward, and Queenie Shaw, the mother of the Shaw siblings, first appears in Fast & Furious Presents: Hobbs & Shaw (2019). Sean Boswell is the Tokyo Drift lead, and he returns in Furious 7.

Jesse, Han Lue, Gisele Yashar and Elena Neves die on screen and Jakob Toretto sacrifices himself, but the saga has reversed several of those deaths, so the answer depends on the film. Jesse (Chad Lindberg) is killed by Johnny Tran's gang in The Fast and the Furious (2001). Han Lue is killed in Tokyo at the start of Furious 7, yet F9 (2021) reveals he is alive and that Deckard Shaw helped fake his death. Letty Ortiz is reported murdered in Fast & Furious (2009), and a mid credits scene in Fast Five shows she may be alive.

Gisele Yashar is lost saving Han Lue in Fast & Furious 6 and returns late in Fast X, rescuing Letty Ortiz and Cipher. Elena Neves is killed by Cipher's enforcer Connor Rhodes in The Fate of the Furious. Jakob Toretto sacrifices himself to stop pursuing mercenaries in Fast X. Brian O'Conner's farewell in Furious 7 is written as two friends parting on the road rather than a death, and he appears at the family barbecue at the end of F9 (2021).

The little boy in F9 (2021), directed by Justin Lin, is Dominic Toretto's young son, Little Brian (Little B). Little B is the baby Cipher holds over Dominic Toretto in The Fate of the Furious (2017), where the baby's mother is Elena Neves, and Dominic Toretto names the boy Brian at the end of that film. Fast X (2023) keeps him at the center of the family's life, and the film ends on a cliffhanger with Dominic Toretto driving off a dam with his son aboard.

That story continues in Fast Forever, which Universal has dated for March 17, 2028. To follow these roles in story order, the Fast and Furious timeline lines up every film, and the Fast and Furious movies hub links to each one.
