What Is Fast X About?

Fast X is about Dominic Toretto defending his family from Dante Reyes, the son of a drug lord Dom's family took down years ago, who wants revenge for his father's death. Dom lives a quiet family life with Letty Ortiz and their young son, Little B, until his crew is sent to Rome by the Agency to steal a computer chip from a moving truck.

A wounded Cipher then turns up at Dom's home and warns him that Dante Reyes is coming for the whole family. It turns out there is no real Agency mission, and the Rome job is a trap that puts Roman Pearce, Tej Parker, Han Lue and Ramsey in danger.

The film is the 11th in release order and sits right after F9. If you are new to the saga, the Fast and Furious movies in order page shows where to start.

Fast X Plot Summary: The Full StorySpoilers

In Fast X, Dante Reyes lures Dominic Toretto's crew into a trap in Rome, scatters the family across the world, and ends with Dom driving off a dam in Portugal. Dom's crew takes an Agency job to steal a computer chip in Rome, while Dom, Letty Ortiz and Little B stay home. Cipher arrives wounded and warns that Dante Reyes has turned her people against her. Dante Reyes wants revenge on Dom for his father's death and the loss of the family fortune.

Little Nobody confirms that the Agency never sent a mission to Rome, so Dom, Letty Ortiz and Little Nobody race to save the team. The truck carries a neutron mine that Dante Reyes sets off by remote, and Dom shoves it into the Tiber to limit the blast. Letty Ortiz is arrested, and Aimes, who is in charge of the Agency, blames Dom's team and orders a manhunt.

In Los Angeles, Jakob Toretto saves Mia Toretto and Little B and takes the boy to Portugal. Tess uses the God's Eye surveillance program to find Dom in Naples and points him to Dante Reyes in Rio. There, Dom races Dante Reyes, who kills Diogo with a car bomb after Dom chooses to save Isabel. Tess then shoots Letty Ortiz, who is taken to a secret facility where Cipher is also held, and the two work out that it is in Antarctica.

Dom's team asks Deckard Shaw for help in London, and Shaw agrees but leaves to protect his mother from Dante Reyes's men. Aimes catches Dom in Rio, but Dante Reyes intercepts them on a bridge, a sniper wounds Tess, and Dante Reyes steals God's Eye, so Aimes joins forces with Dom.

Dante Reyes kidnaps Little B in Portugal, and Jakob Toretto sacrifices himself to stop the pursuing mercenaries. Dante Reyes reveals that Aimes is his partner and shoots down a plane carrying Roman Pearce, Tej Parker, Ramsey and Han Lue. Dom drives off a dam with Little B while Dante Reyes sets off explosives planted there, and the film ends on a cliffhanger. In Antarctica, Gisele Yashar, thought dead, emerges from a submarine and rescues Letty Ortiz and Cipher.

When and Where Did Fast X Premiere?

Fast X had its world premiere in Rome on May 12, 2023, with the red carpet set in the Forum's Temple of Venus and the Colosseum as the backdrop.

The general release followed a week later. Box Office Mojo lists Australia on May 18, 2023, and both the US and UK on May 19, 2023. The US date is confirmed by The Numbers, and the UK and Australian dates are reported by Box Office Mojo. Ratings were PG-13 in the US, 12A in the UK and M in Australia.

Fast X Ending Explained: The Dam, the Plane and AntarcticaSpoilers

The Fast X ending is a deliberate cliffhanger: Dom drives off a dam with his son while Dante Reyes blows up the explosives he planted there, and the film does not resolve the outcome. Roman Pearce, Tej Parker, Ramsey and Han Lue are left in a shot down plane. In Antarctica, Gisele Yashar returns from the dead to free Letty Ortiz and Cipher.

The order of events matters. Aimes is revealed as Dante Reyes's partner, which explains why the manhunt after the Rome chase hit Dom so fast. Dante Reyes then shoots down the plane, and the dam strike comes right after, so the team is split across three danger zones at once: the sky, Portugal and Antarctica. Jakob Toretto's sacrifice against the pursuing mercenaries is what keeps Little B alive long enough to be in the car on the dam.

Compare that with the film's own opening. The Rome job looks like a heist, with a chip on a moving truck, and ends with Dom shoving a neutron mine into the Tiber. The finale reverses that pattern: Dante Reyes plans every step in advance, and Dom only reacts. In series terms, Fast X is the 11th film in both release and chronological order, unlike Tokyo Drift, which was third on release but sixth chronologically. The story runs in a straight line from F9, so the open ending carries straight into the next film with no timeline gap.

Production context supports the reading that this was planned as the first half of a larger story. TheWrap reported a $340 million budget before marketing, blamed on COVID protocols, supply chain problems and a costly cast, and a $318.5 million global opening. The film finished at $705 million worldwide, about 2.07 times its cost.

The dam cliffhanger sets up Fast Forever, and Gisele Yashar's return in Antarctica gives Dom's team a new ally. The dam is the setup, and Antarctica is the real turn. The follow-up film is Fast Forever, dated by Universal for March 17, 2028. Its earlier working title was Fast X: Part 2.

Is There a Fast X Post Credit Scene?Spoilers

Yes, Fast X has one mid credits scene, in which Luke Hobbs is told by Dante Reyes that he is next. Hobbs leads agents into an abandoned theater, where Dante Reyes phones him and names him as his next target. Hobbs answers that he is easy to find, then crushes the phone in his hand.

The scene tells you who Dante Reyes is chasing next, and it gives the sequel a clear thread to pick up. More on Hobbs is on the Luke Hobbs page.

Facts

FAQs

How does Fast X start?

Fast X starts with Dominic Toretto living a quiet family life with Letty Ortiz and their young son, Little B. His crew is sent to Rome by the Agency to steal a computer chip from a moving truck, and then a wounded Cipher turns up at Dom's home to warn him that Dante Reyes is hunting the family.

Is Fast X hit or flop?

Fast X grossed $705 million worldwide against a reported $340 million budget, about 2.07 times its cost. The split was $146 million domestic and $559 million international, and the film opened to $318.5 million globally.

Is Fast X the last one?

No. Fast Forever, the next Fast and Furious film, is dated by Universal for March 17, 2028 (Variety, TheWrap). An Insneider report relayed by Film Stories claims there is no finished script and no director, but it is an unconfirmed rumor. No director has been officially confirmed. See the Fast Forever page for updates.

How did Paul Walker appear in Fast X?

No credited source confirms that he did. Paul Walker is not among the 15 billed roles in Fast X, and no Brian O'Conner credit appears among them.

Why did people not like Fast X?

This is opinion, not a measured verdict. The most likely friction point is the ending: Dom's drive off the dam, the shot down plane and the Antarctica rescue are all left unresolved, so the film asks viewers to wait for Fast Forever. The money is a second angle: a reported $340 million budget returned $705 million worldwide, about 2.07 times its cost, and the domestic opening was $67 million.
