Indiana Jones Box Office Worldwide: Every Film at a Glance

The five Indiana Jones films have grossed about $2.37 billion worldwide, the sum of the five per-film grosses reported by Box Office Mojo, against combined production budgets of $579 million. The table gives each film's budget, domestic gross and international gross, with the worldwide total last. Figures are as reported and rounded to the nearest million, and none are adjusted for inflation.

Which Indiana Jones movie did the best in raw dollars? Indiana Jones and the Kingdom of the Crystal Skull (2008), directed by Steven Spielberg, took $787 million worldwide, roughly a third of the series total. Indiana Jones and the Last Crusade (1989) is second at $474 million, and Raiders of the Lost Ark (1981), also directed by Spielberg, follows at $390 million. Box Office Mojo lists Raiders at an $18 million budget, while The Numbers reports about $20 million, so its return is roughly 20 to 22 times cost depending on the source.

The domestic and international columns show a shift over time. Raiders and Indiana Jones and the Temple of Doom (1984) earned more in the United States and Canada than abroad, while Last Crusade, Crystal Skull and Dial of Destiny each made more than half of their money internationally. Indiana Jones and the Dial of Destiny (2023), directed by James Mangold, finished just behind Raiders in worldwide dollars ($384 million against $390 million) despite costing roughly 17 times as much to make. Harrison Ford leads the cast of all five films, and the full lists sit on the Indiana Jones cast page.

Indiana Jones Box Office Hit or Flop? How the Numbers Read

Measured against budget, the Indiana Jones films were hits until the fifth one, and in my opinion Indiana Jones and the Dial of Destiny is the only entry that reads as a disappointment. The first three films grossed nearly $1.2 billion worldwide on budgets of $18 million, $28 million and $48 million, about 13 times their combined cost. Temple of Doom returned roughly 12 times its $28 million, and Last Crusade roughly 10 times its $48 million. That is a franchise that paid for itself many times over.

Is Indiana Jones 5 a hit or flop? At $384 million worldwide on a $300 million budget, Dial of Destiny returned only about 1.3 times its production cost. In my opinion, a gross that close to the budget is hard to call a profit. It could be argued that the film also had a tough act to follow, since Crystal Skull earned about $403 million more while costing far less ($185 million against $300 million). That being said, Dial of Destiny streams on Disney Plus in the US, where its value is harder to measure in ticket sales.

Crystal Skull is the odd entry. It owns the franchise record at $787 million, yet it returned only about 4 times its $185 million budget, the second lowest return in the series. Perhaps the fairest reading is that it earned the most money while delivering far less value per dollar than the three films before it. All of these are raw grosses, not adjusted for inflation.

How much did Harrison Ford make off of Indiana Jones? Grosses and budgets do not break out any star's pay, so no figure can be taken from them. What the credits do show is that Ford was first billed in all five films. With no sixth film announced, these five totals are the whole series, and our Indiana Jones 6 page tracks any change.
