Who Is Julia in Mission: Impossible?
Julia is the nurse Ethan Hunt marries in Mission: Impossible III. When we meet her, Ethan has stepped back from field work to train recruits, and Julia believes he has a desk job, not a career as an IMF agent. That gap between his two lives drives her whole storyline.
Michelle Monaghan plays her in Mission: Impossible III (2006), directed by J.J. Abrams, where she is billed fifth, and again in Mission: Impossible: Fallout (2018), directed by Christopher McQuarrie, where she is billed ninth. In between, Mission: Impossible: Ghost Protocol (2011), directed by Brad Bird, shows her briefly at the very end. The credits list her as Julia, and also as Julia Meade-Hunt (uncredited).
So, if you came here asking who plays Julia in the Mission: Impossible films, the answer is Michelle Monaghan in Mission: Impossible III and Fallout. Her place among the other leads is covered on the Mission: Impossible characters page, and the full cast is on Mission: Impossible cast.

Julia's Story Arc Across Three FilmsSpoilers
Julia's arc runs through three films: a hurried wedding, a long absence and a final conversation.
Mission: Impossible III (2006). Ethan is engaged to Julia when the IMF pulls him back in to rescue his former student Lindsey Farris, who dies when an explosive planted in her head goes off. Ethan marries Julia in a hurry, then leads the unauthorized raid to seize the arms dealer Owen Davian at the Vatican. Davian is freed in an ambush, and he kidnaps Julia, demanding the Rabbit's Foot in exchange for her life. The IMF figure Musgrave quietly helps Ethan escape custody so he can steal the item in Shanghai. Davian then puts an explosive in Ethan's head and appears to shoot Julia, but she turns out to be alive. Julia shoots the traitor Musgrave and revives Ethan, who has stopped the device with a makeshift defibrillator after killing Davian. The couple leave on their honeymoon.
Mission: Impossible: Ghost Protocol (2011). At the end of the film, in Seattle, William Brandt tells Ethan that Julia is alive. Ethan sees her from a distance, she smiles at him, and Luther Stickell hands him a new mission briefing.
Mission: Impossible: Fallout (2018). Julia is now Ethan's ex-wife. The CIA agent August Walker threatens her, and Ethan's team races to a medical camp near Kashmir where the bombs are being set up. Once the plutonium is stopped, Ethan makes peace with Julia, who has moved on with a new life.
Julia's Relationships: Ethan, Luther and the People Who Used Her
Julia's most important relationship is with Ethan Hunt, and the series uses her mostly to show what his work costs him. Ethan Hunt hides the IMF from her in Mission: Impossible III, and by Fallout she has built a life that no longer includes him.
Her ties to the team are thinner but real. Luther Stickell, played by Ving Rhames, appears in Mission: Impossible III, and in Ghost Protocol he is the one who hands Ethan the new briefing as Julia smiles from a distance. See Luther Stickell for his own arc. William Brandt is the person who tells Ethan that Julia is alive, which makes him a messenger for the most personal beat of that film. See William Brandt.
The villains treat Julia as leverage. Owen Davian, played by Philip Seymour Hoffman, kidnaps her to force Ethan's hand, and Musgrave, the traitor inside the IMF, is exposed in the same stretch of the story. August Walker does the same thing years later in Fallout when he threatens her to pressure Ethan. Each time, the threat to Julia works as a clock on the plot, though she is also the one who ends Musgrave.
Does Julia Die in Mission: Impossible?Spoilers
Julia does not die in any of the three films she appears in, and her story ends with her alive and settled in a new life. The only moment that looks like her death is staged: in Mission: Impossible III, Davian appears to shoot her, and then she turns out to be alive.
The last word on her comes in Mission: Impossible: Fallout, when Ethan reconciles with her after the Kashmir bombs are stopped. The films present her as an ex-wife who has moved on.
Julia's Best Moments, Ranked by Impact
In my opinion, Julia's best moment is the end of Mission: Impossible III, when she shoots Musgrave and revives Ethan. It turns her from the person being rescued into the person doing the rescuing, and it is the clearest example in the series of a spouse stepping into the IMF's world on her own terms.
Second is the Ghost Protocol coda. It lasts a few seconds, with Brandt's reveal, Ethan watching from a distance and her smile, and it works because the film does not explain anything. It also gives the series a quiet emotional anchor at the end of its loudest set piece film, the one with the Burj Khalifa climb.
Third is Fallout's reconciliation. It could be argued that this is the most mature scene Ethan has in the whole saga, because he asks for nothing and accepts that she has moved on. That being said, Julia's role in Fallout is smaller than her role in Mission: Impossible III, and a reader coming from III may want more of her. If you want a character who keeps coming back, Ilsa Faust is perhaps the better one to follow.
