Mission Impossible Cast: Actors and Directors of All Eight Films

The Mission Impossible film series cast is anchored by Tom Cruise, who plays Ethan Hunt in all eight films from Mission: Impossible (1996) to Mission: Impossible: The Final Reckoning (2025). The 1966 TV series is a separate production with its own cast, so the list runs through the eight films only.

The actors below recur most often across the series, shown under the names credited on each film.

Each film then builds its own ensemble around that core. Mission Impossible 1996 pairs Cruise with Jon Voight as Jim Phelps, Emmanuelle Béart as Claire, Jean Reno as Krieger, Kristin Scott Thomas as Sarah Davies and Vanessa Redgrave as Max. Mission Impossible 2 brings in Dougray Scott as Sean Ambrose, Thandiwe Newton as Nyah Hall and Brendan Gleeson as McCloy. Mission Impossible 3 adds Philip Seymour Hoffman as Owen Davian, Keri Russell as Lindsey Farris, Maggie Q as Zhen and Laurence Fishburne as Theodore Brassel.

Mission Impossible Ghost Protocol (2011) brings in Paula Patton as Jane, Michael Nyqvist as Hendricks, Léa Seydoux as Sabine Moreau, Anil Kapoor as Brij Nath and Josh Holloway as Hanaway. Mission Impossible Rogue Nation (2015) adds Simon McBurney as Atlee, Alec Baldwin as Alan Hunley and Tom Hollander as the Prime Minister. Mission Impossible Fallout (2018) brings Henry Cavill as August Walker and Wes Bentley as Erik.

Who are the actors in the new Mission: Impossible? The newest film, Mission Impossible Final Reckoning, is led by Cruise, Hayley Atwell, Ving Rhames, Simon Pegg, Esai Morales as Gabriel and Pom Klementieff as Paris. Henry Czerny returns as Kittridge, and the newcomers include Holt McCallany as Serling, Janet McTeer as Walters, Nick Offerman as General Sidney, Hannah Waddingham as Admiral Neely and Tramell Tillman as Captain Bledsoe. Mission Impossible Dead Reckoning (2023) added Shea Whigham as Briggs, Greg Tarzan Davis as Degas and Cary Elwes as Denlinger.

Who are the villains in Mission: Impossible? The credited antagonists change with each film. Dougray Scott plays the rogue former agent Sean Ambrose in the second film, Philip Seymour Hoffman plays the arms dealer Owen Davian in the third, and Sean Harris plays Solomon Lane in Rogue Nation and Fallout. Esai Morales plays Gabriel, the man who used to act for the Entity, in the last two films.

Who is the female in Mission: Impossible? There is no single answer, because every film has its own lead women. The early films give us Emmanuelle Béart as Claire, Thandiwe Newton as Nyah Hall, Michelle Monaghan as Julia, Keri Russell as Lindsey Farris, Maggie Q as Zhen and Paula Patton as Jane. The later films add Rebecca Ferguson as Ilsa Faust, Vanessa Kirby as The White Widow, Angela Bassett as Erika Sloane, Hayley Atwell as Grace and Pom Klementieff as Paris. Ferguson has appeared in the most films of the group, with three. For every role in more detail, see the Mission Impossible characters page.

Which actor is famous for Mission: Impossible? Tom Cruise, who plays Ethan Hunt in every film and has led the saga for 29 years, from the 1996 release to the 2025 release.

Five directors have made the eight Mission: Impossible films: Brian De Palma, John Woo, J.J. Abrams, Brad Bird and Christopher McQuarrie. The first four films each had a different director, and McQuarrie then made the last four.

Brian De Palma directed Mission: Impossible (1996), the 111 minute film that opened the saga. John Woo followed with Mission: Impossible II (2000), the first sequel of Cruise's career, according to CBS News, and Cruise also served as producer. J.J. Abrams directed Mission: Impossible III (2006) after David Fincher and Joe Carnahan had left the project, according to NBC News, and the film marked Abrams's feature directing debut.

Brad Bird directed Mission: Impossible: Ghost Protocol (2011), his first live action film, according to The Reel Bits. Cruise did the Burj Khalifa climb himself, according to ET Online, which made it a practical stunt rather than a screen trick.

Christopher McQuarrie directed Mission: Impossible: Rogue Nation (2015), Mission: Impossible: Fallout (2018), Mission: Impossible: Dead Reckoning Part One (2023) and Mission: Impossible: The Final Reckoning (2025). Fallout was the first time a director returned for a second film in the series, and it took in $824 million worldwide, according to Box Office Mojo. For the full takings of each film, see the Mission Impossible box office page.

The composers changed more often than the directors. Danny Elfman scored the 1996 film, Hans Zimmer scored the second, Michael Giacchino scored the third and Ghost Protocol, Joe Kraemer scored Rogue Nation, Lorne Balfe scored Fallout and Dead Reckoning, and Max Aruj scored The Final Reckoning. The Mission Impossible soundtrack page covers the music in detail.

Ving Rhames, Simon Pegg and Henry Czerny are the main returning actors, and none of the saga's major roles has been recast. Cruise is the only actor in every film, and the supporting cast has been rebuilt around him roughly every two films, so the changes come from who is brought back and who is written out.

Ving Rhames is the longest running supporting regular, playing Luther Stickell from 1996 to The Final Reckoning, although his name is not among the fifteen top billed cast of Ghost Protocol. Simon Pegg joined in the third film and has played Benji Dunn in five films since. It could be argued that these two turn the saga from a solo star vehicle into a real ensemble, and in my opinion that shift is the main reason the later films hold together.

Some returns come after long gaps. Henry Czerny played Kittridge in 1996, then came back in Dead Reckoning in 2023 and The Final Reckoning in 2025, a gap of 27 years. Michelle Monaghan played Julia in 2006 and returned for Fallout in 2018. Sean Harris carried Lane over from Rogue Nation into Fallout, and Alec Baldwin did the same with Alan Hunley.

Others appear for a stretch and then step back. Jeremy Renner played William Brandt in Ghost Protocol and Rogue Nation. Henry Cavill played August Walker in Fallout. Rebecca Ferguson played Ilsa Faust in three films, and she is not among the top fifteen billed cast of The Final Reckoning. Hayley Atwell and Esai Morales moved the other way, arriving in Dead Reckoning and carrying the last two films.

Who is in the cast now, and who will be in the next film? No further Mission: Impossible film has been announced. An anonymous email shared by the gossip account DeuxMoi claimed that Chloe Zhao is in talks to write and direct a ninth film, according to Yahoo Entertainment on 19 February 2026, but the article says the claim cannot be verified, and Paramount, Cruise and Zhao have made no statement. Treat it as an unconfirmed rumor, and follow the Mission Impossible 9 page for status. For the order the films were made in, see Mission Impossible movies in order.
