Knuckles Sonic Movie: Who Plays Knuckles the Echidna

Idris Elba voices Knuckles the Echidna, and the credits list the part as "Knuckles (voice)". He is billed fifth in the cast of Sonic the Hedgehog 2 and fourth in Sonic the Hedgehog 3, so he sits among the leads rather than the supporting players. TheWrap reported Elba's casting in August 2021, ahead of the film's April 8, 2022 release in the US.

In the story, Knuckles is an echidna hunting the Master Emerald, a powerful artifact. That quest brings him into the orbit of dr robotnik and, soon after, into a fight alongside Sonic and Tails. Because he is a computer animated character with a voice credit, there is no on screen actor in the role, which is why you will not find a human name next to his.

Adam Pally appears in the same cast as Wade Whipple, a human character, so that is a different role from Knuckles. Knuckles also has his own Paramount+ series (2024), which is covered on the sonic timeline page. If you want the full ensemble, the sonic cast page sets out who plays whom, and the sonic movies hub shows where the three films sit in the saga.

Knuckles arrives in Sonic the Hedgehog 2 as a stranger with his own agenda and leaves it as a member of Sonic's team, a position he keeps in Sonic the Hedgehog 3. His first scenes make him a partner of convenience for Dr. Robotnik, who has slipped out of the Mushroom Planet after eight months and needs someone who knows where the Master Emerald is. Knuckles wants the artifact for his own reasons, so the pair share a goal without sharing much else.

Meanwhile, Sonic and Tails race to reach the Emerald first, and the journey takes them through a G.U.N. ambush at a wedding and then an avalanche. The turning point for Knuckles comes when Robotnik grabs the Emerald and abandons him, along with Sonic, to drown. Tails flying in by biplane pulls both of them out, which is the first time Knuckles is on the receiving end of Sonic's side.

By the time the fight reaches Green Hills, where Robotnik has built a giant robot, the Master Emerald shatters into seven Chaos Emeralds. Sonic uses them to become Super Sonic, and the robot falls with Robotnik inside. Knuckles then repairs the Emerald, and he, Sonic and Tails agree to guard it together (a promise that works like a team contract).

That agreement carries into the sonic the hedgehog 3 story, where Knuckles is simply part of the crew G.U.N. dispatches to Tokyo to find Shadow, who slips away. Later, Team Sonic and their parents take the second keycard needed to stop the Eclipse Cannon. If you wonder about his early years, the first film is the one he skips, and sonic movies in order shows how the three films connect. For the film that introduced him, see the sonic 2 movie page.

Knuckles' most important relationships are with Sonic and Tails, and the second film moves him from Robotnik's ally to Sonic's teammate. Robotnik leaves both Sonic and Knuckles to drown, and Tails arrives in the biplane to rescue them. Afterward, Knuckles, Sonic and Tails promise to protect the Master Emerald together.

His link to Dr. Robotnik, played by Jim Carrey, is short and sour. Robotnik uses Knuckles to get to the Master Emerald, then betrays him once he has it. Robotnik's story then moves toward the Eclipse Cannon plot in the third film, where Ivo joins his grandfather Gerald.

In Sonic the Hedgehog 3 the pairing that matters is Knuckles and the rest of Team Sonic against Shadow, voiced by Keanu Reeves. The team goes after him in Tokyo, he escapes, and G.U.N. Director Rockwell (Krysten Ritter) later turns against the heroes. You can read more about those two characters on the tails sonic and shadow the hedgehog movie pages, and the hero of the team has his own entry as the sonic the hedgehog character.

Knuckles ends Sonic the Hedgehog 2 by repairing the Master Emerald and agreeing with Sonic and Tails to guard it as a team. A mid credits scene then shows Agent Stone overhearing G.U.N. discuss a secret facility linked to Project Shadow, and Shadow appears briefly in live action in a non speaking cameo, which sets up the third film.

Sonic the Hedgehog 3 ends with Gerald Robotnik dying in the reactor core after revealing he wanted to destroy the Earth in Maria's name. The beam from the Eclipse Cannon is diverted and slices part of the Moon, then Ivo and Shadow sacrifice themselves to move the failing cannon core away from Earth. Sonic survives and reconciles with his friends.

The next entry is sonic 4, which Paramount has set for March 19, 2027 in the US. The film is in post production, and there is a separate page for the sonic 4 trailer once footage appears.

In my opinion, Knuckles' best stretch is the sequence in Sonic the Hedgehog 2 where he is left to drown beside Sonic, because it is where the film turns him from a threat into a character the audience wants to see again. Robotnik's betrayal is a practical, mean little move, and it makes the arrival of Tails in the biplane feel earned. It could be argued that this single reversal does more for Knuckles than any speech could.

My second pick is the moment the Master Emerald breaks into seven Chaos Emeralds. That set piece in Green Hills is where the stakes become personal for him, since the object he has been chasing is suddenly in pieces, and the follow up is quiet. Once Super Sonic has destroyed the giant robot, Knuckles repairs the Emerald and promises to protect it with Sonic and Tails. As a payoff for a character who arrived as Robotnik's ally, I think that small scene lands well.

In Sonic the Hedgehog 3, my pick is the fact that Knuckles is simply there, on the team G.U.N. sends to Tokyo. Perhaps that is less dramatic than the second film, but it shows how far he has come. If you want to see where the trio fits in the saga, the sonic movies ranked page is where we weigh the films against each other.
