Tails Sonic Movie Character: Voice, Story and Fate

Tails, full name Miles "Tails" Prower, is a fox with two tails who serves as Sonic's partner and teammate across the Sonic films, and the character is an animal, not a human. The character comes from the Sega games that the films adapt. The credits list the role as "Tails (voice)" in sonic 2 movie and sonic the hedgehog 3, while the cameo in sonic the hedgehog 2020 was voiced by Colleen O'Shaughnessey without a credit.

Tails is a boy, and the films refer to the character as he. Colleen O'Shaughnessey voices every appearance, from the 2020 cameo to the third film, so the sidekick never changes voice partway through the saga. In Sonic the Hedgehog 2 (2022), Sonic is settled on Earth when Tails comes along to help him face a new danger. The two race to find the Master Emerald before Dr. Robotnik and Knuckles can, and their trip is disrupted by an ambush at a wedding involving G.U.N. and then by an avalanche. After Robotnik betrays Knuckles, takes the Emerald and leaves both Sonic and Knuckles to drown, Tails arrives in a biplane and rescues them. The action then moves to Green Hills, where the Master Emerald breaks into seven Chaos Emeralds and Sonic uses them to become Super Sonic.

In Sonic the Hedgehog 3 (2024), G.U.N. sends Sonic, Tails and Knuckles to Tokyo to catch Shadow, who has been released from a prison facility. Shadow escapes, and from there the heroes learn his history, track Ivo Robotnik's drones to an abandoned G.U.N. base and team up with Agent Stone to stop the Eclipse Cannon.

Tails is Sonic's closest ally in the sequels, and the other relationships in the films grow out of that partnership. In Sonic the Hedgehog 2, Tails comes along specifically to help Sonic face the new danger, and the two set out together to find the Master Emerald.

Knuckles starts as an opponent. He teams up with Robotnik to hunt the Master Emerald, is double crossed, and then Tails arrives in a biplane to rescue him alongside Sonic. In the third film, Tails shares the Tokyo mission with Sonic and Knuckles against shadow the hedgehog movie. Tails is alive at the end of every film in which the character appears. In the first film, the fox appears only in the mid credits scene, arriving through a ring portal to find Sonic. In the third film, the closing stretch is darker for others than for Tails. Gerald dies in the reactor core after revealing he wanted to destroy the Earth for Maria's sake, and Ivo and Shadow give themselves up to push the unstable cannon core away from the planet. Sonic survives and reconciles with his friends and family.

In my opinion, the biplane rescue in Sonic the Hedgehog 2 is the best Tails moment in the saga. Sonic and Knuckles have just been left to drown by Robotnik, the film has been playing the two as rivals, and the sidekick shows up from the sky to save both. It could be argued that the scene does more for the team dynamic than any speech, because it gives Tails a practical job instead of a joke.

Perhaps the neatest piece of franchise planning is the 2020 mid credits cameo. The fox arrives through a ring portal in the final moments, and a casual viewer leaves the theater knowing exactly who is coming next. Compare that with the second film's own tease, where Agent Stone overhears G.U.N. discussing a facility tied to Project Shadow: both are sequel hooks, but the Tails one is the more cheerful of the two.

The third film gives Tails the least individual spotlight, which is fair given that Shadow, Gerald and Ivo take most of the story. Still, the Tokyo chase and the push to stop the Eclipse Cannon show a team that works. If your child asks which film to start with for Tails, I would point them to the second, since that is where the fox truly gets to play a part.
