Sonic Cast: Every Actor and Voice in the Movies

Ben Schwartz voices Sonic, James Marsden and Tika Sumpter play Tom and Maddie Wachowski, and Jim Carrey plays Dr. Robotnik, and that core group carries all three Sonic movies. The cast pairs a voice ensemble of hedgehogs and echidnas with a live action family in Montana, and Schwartz is billed first in every film. Marsden plays the town sheriff and Sumpter plays his wife, the two humans who take Sonic in. All three films are rated PG in the US, UK and Australia.

Across the three films, the same actors return for most of the main roles, and Schwartz is the one constant voice of Sonic.

The first film, Sonic the Hedgehog (2020), keeps the cast small. Beyond the four leads, Natasha Rothwell plays Rachel and Adam Pally plays Wade Whipple. Neal McDonough plays Major Bennington and Lee Majdoub plays Agent Stone. Tom Butler is credited as Vice Chairman Walters, and Melody Nosipho Niemann plays Jojo.

The Sonic 2 movie widens the ensemble. Colleen O'Shaughnessey voices Tails, who comes along to help Sonic face the new danger, and Idris Elba voices Knuckles the Echidna, who was cast in August 2021 according to TheWrap. Shemar Moore plays Randall, and Donna Jay Fulks voices Longclaw, the guardian who sent Sonic to Earth.

In Sonic the Hedgehog 3, Keanu Reeves voices Shadow, a casting Variety reported ahead of the December 20, 2024 release. Krysten Ritter plays G.U.N. Director Rockwell, Alyla Browne plays Maria, the granddaughter of Professor Gerald Robotnik, and Jorma Taccone plays Kyle Lancebottom. Jim Carrey is credited as both Ivo Robotnik and Gerald Robotnik. Jeff Fowler directed all three Sonic films, and Pat Casey, Josh Miller and Whittington wrote the second, so the series has had one steady hand behind the camera since the start. Sonic the Hedgehog (2020), directed by Fowler, arrived on February 14, 2020 after Paramount pushed the date back so the studio could redesign the title character. CNBC reported the delay and Fowler's statement about the redesign in May 2019.

On the writing side, TheWrap named Casey, Miller and Whittington as the writers of Sonic the Hedgehog 2, and Casey and Miller are reported as the writers of Sonic the Hedgehog 4. Producer credits for the fourth film are reported as Neal H. Moritz, Toby Ascher and Toru Nakahara, per TheWrap.

Tom Holkenborg is the credited composer on all three films, which gives the saga a consistent musical identity from one entry to the next. The three films run 99, 123 and 110 minutes, and Fowler is reported to be directing Sonic the Hedgehog 4 as well. Nearly every lead from the first three films is confirmed to return for Sonic the Hedgehog 4, and the new names are Ben Kingsley, Matt Berry, Nick Offerman and Richard Ayoade. In my opinion that continuity is the saga's quiet strength. Paramount revealed the title and cast on March 19, 2026, and TheWrap lists Ben Schwartz, Jim Carrey, Idris Elba, Keanu Reeves, Colleen O'Shaughnessey, Lee Majdoub, James Marsden and Tika Sumpter among the confirmed returning names. Schwartz is confirmed as Sonic the Hedgehog, Carrey as Dr. Ivo Robotnik and Elba as Knuckles the Echidna. The announcement did not attach characters to the other returning names, so I will not guess at who plays what beyond those roles.

The four newcomers were confirmed without character details. Kristen Bell is reported to voice Amy Rose, according to TheWrap on February 18, 2026, and Schwartz confirmed the news on Instagram. Because that report came before Paramount's March announcement and is not on its list, treat Amy Rose as reported rather than locked. A separate report from AOL (Digital Spy) says Carrey is also playing Robotnik's grandfather Gerald, which is a rumor until Paramount says so.

Recasting has been rare. From the credited casts, the main roles stay with the same actors from film to film, and the clearest change is a title one: Tom Butler plays Walters as Vice Chairman in the first film and Commander in the second and third. Perhaps the biggest question for the next film is how a bigger ensemble shares the screen, since the second and third films already juggled Sonic, Tails and Knuckles beside the Wachowskis.
