Sonic Games: What the Sonic Movies Bring to the Screen

The three live action Sonic movies borrow their heroes, rivals and magical objects from Sega's Sonic video games: the rings, the emeralds, and a villain with a talent for building machines. Jeff Fowler directed all three films, Ben Schwartz voices Sonic each time, and Tom Holkenborg composed the score for each one.

The voice credits run as Sonic (voice) for Ben Schwartz, Tails (voice) for Colleen O'Shaughnessey, Knuckles (voice) for Idris Elba and Shadow (voice) for Keanu Reeves, with Jim Carrey playing Dr. Robotnik on screen.

The first film gives the hedgehog a home. Sonic grows up alone in a cave near Green Hills, Montana, and the story is anchored by Sheriff Tom Wachowski and his wife Maddie. The rings, the emeralds and the villain's machines then arrive as set pieces inside that family story.

If you are choosing tonight's film for a child, all three movies carry a PG rating in the US, the UK and Australia, so nobody needs experience with the games first. Each idea lands in a particular scene, and the Sonic movies in order guide shows where each film sits.

Sonic is a young blue hedgehog who runs at supersonic speed, and his bag of magic rings is the object that carries the plot of Sonic the Hedgehog (2020). After an attack on his home world, his guardian Longclaw sends him to Earth with the rings and stays behind to hold off the attackers.

On screen, the rings work as portals. When Sonic panics after Tom Wachowski hits him with a tranquilizer dart, a ring portal sends the whole bag to the roof of a building in San Francisco, and that turns the film into a road trip with the sheriff. Earlier, a bout of loneliness makes Sonic lose control of his speed, which knocks out power across the region and brings Dr. Robotnik to town.

Tails is the two tailed fox who first appears in the mid credits scene of Sonic the Hedgehog (2020), stepping through a ring portal to find Sonic, and he becomes a full member of the team in the sequel. Colleen O'Shaughnessey voices him, uncredited in the first film and credited in the second.

In Sonic the Hedgehog 2 (2022), Tails travels with Sonic to look for the Master Emerald before Robotnik and Knuckles can reach it. When Robotnik leaves Sonic and Knuckles to drown, Tails arrives in a biplane and rescues them.

Knuckles the Echidna hunts the Master Emerald, a powerful artifact, and Idris Elba voices him from Sonic the Hedgehog 2 onward. TheWrap reported Elba's casting in August 2021, ahead of the April 8, 2022 release.

The sequel introduces him as Robotnik's ally. Robotnik escapes the Mushroom Planet eight months after Sonic sent him there and teams up with Knuckles, then betrays him and takes the Emerald for himself. After the final fight, Knuckles repairs the Master Emerald, and he, Sonic and Tails promise to protect it together.

The Chaos Emeralds arrive when the Master Emerald breaks into seven pieces during the Green Hills fight in Sonic the Hedgehog 2, and Sonic uses them to become Super Sonic. He then destroys Robotnik's giant robot, and Robotnik is lost with it.

Sonic the Hedgehog 3 brings the transformation back with a twist. After Shadow badly wounds Tom, an enraged Sonic uses the Master Emerald to become Super Sonic, and Shadow answers by turning into Super Shadow. The fight ends only when Sonic realizes revenge is consuming him, and the two agree to stop the cannon together.

In the third film the glowing form is a danger as well as a power.

Shadow is the alien hedgehog whom G.U.N. captured in 1974, and he is the central figure of Sonic the Hedgehog 3. Keanu Reeves voices him, and Variety reported the casting along with the December 20, 2024 US release date.

The setup arrives in the Sonic the Hedgehog 2 mid credits scene, where Agent Stone overhears G.U.N. discuss a secret facility linked to Project Shadow, and Shadow makes a brief, non speaking appearance in live action. The third film then opens in 1974, with Professor Gerald Robotnik studying Shadow, who befriends Gerald's granddaughter Maria. She dies during a failed escape, and Shadow is put into suspended animation.

In the present day, G.U.N. sends Sonic, Tails and Knuckles after him in Tokyo. The climax involves the orbital Eclipse Cannon, and Ivo Robotnik and Shadow sacrifice themselves to push its failing core away from Earth. For more, see Shadow the Hedgehog movie.

Dr. Robotnik, played by Jim Carrey, is the arrogant roboticist and the one antagonist who appears in all three films. In Sonic the Hedgehog (2020) the government sends him to investigate the power outage, and he becomes obsessed with Sonic once he learns that the hedgehog's quills can power his machines.

He is banished to a mushroom planet at the end of the first film, escapes in the second, and is lost with his giant robot at the end of that one. In the third, Carrey plays two roles, Ivo Robotnik and his grandfather Gerald Robotnik, and Ivo's assistant Agent Stone (played by Lee Majdoub) helps the heroes track the drones.

Sonic the Hedgehog 4 reaches US theaters on March 19, 2027, a date Paramount announced in January 2025 and TheWrap reported on January 21 of that year. Dexerto reported that cameras started rolling on March 2, 2026, and the film is now in post production.

No UK or Australian release dates have been published. A Nerdist article from December 2025 claimed a move to December 22, 2027, but coverage from March 2026 onward still lists March 19, 2027, so the later date remains unconfirmed. The latest on the cast and schedule is on the Sonic 4 page.

In my opinion, Sonic the Hedgehog 3 leans on game style material the most, Sonic the Hedgehog 2 comes second, and Sonic the Hedgehog (2020) is third. This ranks borrowed ideas, not overall quality, and for that you can read Sonic movies ranked.

Sonic the Hedgehog 3 takes first place because nearly everything in it is a rival, a power or a hidden base: Shadow, Super Shadow, the Master Emerald, the Eclipse Cannon and the G.U.N. headquarters in London. It also had the largest budget of the three, at $122 million, and Box Office Mojo reports about $492 million worldwide.

Sonic the Hedgehog 2 is second because it introduces Knuckles and the Master Emerald, then splits the emerald into seven Chaos Emeralds for the Super Sonic fight. Its mid credits scene plants Project Shadow, so it works almost like a bridge between the other two.

Sonic the Hedgehog (2020) comes last, and perhaps that is fair, because it spends most of its time on a hedgehog and a sheriff on a road trip. The rings, Robotnik's quill powered machines and the Tails tease are there, but it is a family road movie first and a game adaptation second. That being said, it is the easiest place to start for a young viewer.
