A Quiet Place Characters List: Every Main Role and Who Plays ItSpoilers

The A Quiet Place characters list starts with the five members of the Abbott family, adds one outsider named Emmett in A Quiet Place Part II, and resets with a new group in the prequel A Quiet Place: Day One. Spoilers follow for all three films, so skip ahead if you have not watched them. If you are new to the saga, A Quiet Place movies in order sets out the viewing sequence, and the A Quiet Place movies hub covers every release.

The Abbott Family in A Quiet Place (2018)

A Quiet Place (2018), directed by John Krasinski, follows a family that survives on an isolated farm in New York by staying silent and speaking in American Sign Language. The creatures are blind and hunt by sound (see A Quiet Place creatures and A Quiet Place rules), so every character is defined by how carefully they move and what they are willing to risk. The full film is on the A Quiet Place 2018 page.

Evelyn Abbott is the mother, played by Emily Blunt, who is billed first in both main films. She is expecting a baby when the story begins, and her labor arrives in the middle of a creature attack. By the end she kills one creature with a shotgun and chambers another shell as more approach. Her full arc is on the Evelyn Abbott in A Quiet Place page.

Lee Abbott is the father, played by John Krasinski, who also directed the film. He works to protect his family and tries to improve the hearing device of his deaf daughter, Regan. He is fatally wounded while drawing a creature away so that his children can escape, which leaves Evelyn to carry the family forward. More is on Lee Abbott in A Quiet Place.

Regan Abbott is the deaf daughter, played by Millicent Simmonds in both main films. When she and her brother are trapped in a silo, the high pitched whine from her cochlear implant drives a creature away. She then realizes that the feedback hurts the creatures, and amplifying it through a microphone exposes a weak spot. Read more on Regan Abbott in A Quiet Place.

Marcus Abbott is the son who shares the silo with Regan, played by Noah Jupe. In the sequel he is hurt in a trap, then left guarding the baby, and that gives him a much larger share of the action. See Marcus Abbott in A Quiet Place.

Beau Abbott, played by Cade Woodward, is the youngest child. He is killed in the first act when a toy he is carrying makes noise, and the guilt that follows hangs over everyone else in the family.

A Quiet Place Part II Characters

A Quiet Place Part II (2021), also directed by Krasinski, opens on the first day of the invasion, when the Abbotts are at a small town baseball game and the sky lights up. It then jumps ahead to Evelyn, Regan, Marcus and a newborn baby leaving their wrecked farm after the loss of Lee and Beau. The main cast returns, so the one new face to learn is Emmett. Details on the sequel are on the A Quiet Place Part II page.

Emmett is played by Cillian Murphy, and in Part II he is a neighbor who lost his wife and sons and is sheltering in an old steel foundry. He wants nothing to do with the Abbotts' problems at first. After Regan sets off alone to broadcast the high pitched signal, Emmett rescues her from an attack and agrees to go with her. Zachary Golinger is credited as Emmett's Son. Murphy is not in the 2018 cast, so Part II is his first appearance in the series. More is on Emmett in A Quiet Place.

Once the family is split, each Abbott gets a separate task. Regan reaches the radio station, broadcasts the signal, disables a creature and finishes it with a metal rod, then leaves her implant attached to the microphone so the signal keeps playing. Marcus hides himself and the baby in an airtight compartment, and later uses a portable radio to weaken a creature before shooting it. Evelyn goes out for medical supplies and returns in time to save her children. Djimon Hounsou appears in Part II, credited as Man on Island, and returns in Day One as Henri.

A Quiet Place: Day One Characters

A Quiet Place: Day One (2024), directed by Michael Sarnoski, is the spinoff prequel, and it leaves the Abbotts behind for a new cast in Manhattan. The film is on the A Quiet Place Day One page, and the order of events across all three films is laid out in the A Quiet Place timeline.

Sam is credited as Samira and played by Lupita Nyong'o. She is a terminally ill cancer patient in a hospice just outside New York City, living with her service cat, Frodo. Her nurse, Reuben (Alex Wolff), persuades her to join a group trip into Manhattan to see a marionette show, and the creatures arrive while they are in the city. Read more on Sam in A Quiet Place Day One.

Eric is a British law student, played by Joseph Quinn, who finds Frodo and later finds Sam. She asks him to help her get back to a jazz club where her late father used to play and to find pizza from Patsy's. Patsy's is destroyed, so Eric finds pizza elsewhere. See Eric in A Quiet Place Day One.

Reuben does not last the night, because a generator gives the group away and he is killed. Henri, played by Hounsou, is among the survivors in the puppet theater, and he is aboard the evacuation boat at the end. Frodo was played by two cats, and Variety reported that Sarnoski used no computer generated cat.

Sam chooses to spend her last hours doing what she wants rather than fleeing. She sets off car alarms to pull the creatures away so Eric and Frodo can reach the boat, and Eric finds a note asking him to look after her cat. The film leaves her alone in the city, playing Nina Simone's Feeling Good aloud while a creature appears behind her. Her death is implied rather than shown.

Who Are the Female Characters in A Quiet Place?

The central female characters are Evelyn Abbott (Emily Blunt), Regan Abbott (Millicent Simmonds) and Sam (Lupita Nyong'o, credited as Samira). Eliane Umuhire is also credited as Zena in Day One. Evelyn and Regan span both main films, while Sam carries the prequel.

How the Characters Work: An Analysis

It could be argued that every lead in the series is built around a single relationship to sound. Evelyn is endurance, someone who keeps going while staying quiet, and Lee is the cost of protecting other people. Regan turns what the world treats as a limitation, a whine from a hearing device, into the one weapon that works, which makes her the engine of both main films. In my opinion Emmett is the reluctant outsider the Abbotts need in Part II, a grieving counterweight to a family that has only just lost its father.

Day One then inverts the pattern. Where the Abbotts fight for a future, Sam has no future to protect, and she chooses how to spend the night instead (a jazz club, a slice of pizza, a cat kept safe). Perhaps that is why the prequel plays as a smaller and sadder film than the two before it, though that is a matter of taste. For a comparison of the three films, see A Quiet Place movies ranked.

Who Returns in A Quiet Place Part III?

TheWrap reported in March 2026 that the cast of A Quiet Place Part III includes Emily Blunt, Cillian Murphy, Millicent Simmonds and Noah Jupe, joined by Jack O'Connell, Jason Clarke and Katy O'Brian. The US release is set for July 30, 2027, with Krasinski writing, directing and producing. For the full list of actors across the series, see A Quiet Place cast.
