Roman Pearce Fast and Furious: Who He Is and Who Plays Him

Roman Pearce is the childhood friend of Brian O'Conner and one of the longest serving members of the crew around Dominic Toretto. Roman Pearce is the character's credited name, and the actor is Tyrese Gibson, so there is no separate real name for the character. Fast X credits the part as "Roman".

He debuts in 2 Fast 2 Furious (2003), directed by John Singleton, where Brian insists on bringing him onto an undercover job even though Roman does not trust him. Gibson appears in seven films: 2 Fast 2 Furious, Fast Five, Fast & Furious 6, Furious 7, The Fate of the Furious, F9 and Fast X. Roman's most important relationship is with Brian O'Conner, played by Paul Walker, because the whole character is built on that friendship. In the setup of 2 Fast 2 Furious, Brian will only go undercover against Verone if his childhood friend Roman joins the team, and Roman is wary of him from the start. The film does not give a clear reason for his distrust.

His second pairing is with Tej Parker, played by Ludacris. The pairing starts in 2 Fast 2 Furious (2003), and the two appear together in every later film on his list, from Fast Five through Fast X. Around them sit Dominic Toretto, who leads the crew in the later films, and Han Lue, who shares the Fast X danger with Roman, Tej and Ramsey.

Roman Pearce's fate is unresolved: the last film he appears in, Fast X, leaves him aboard a plane that Dante Reyes shoots down. Dante reveals that Aimes is his partner and brings down the plane carrying Roman, Tej, Ramsey and Han, and the film ends on a cliffhanger without showing the outcome.

No film confirms that Roman Pearce dies or survives. The next film, Fast Forever (March 17, 2028), is dated by Universal, and Vin Diesel has said shooting starts in December, so his status stays open for now. Roman Pearce's best moments are the F9 satellite job, the 2 Fast 2 Furious finish and the Fast X plane cliffhanger, in that order. The F9 job comes first because it breaks a stunt into clean steps: Tej and Roman need to wreck the satellite and stop the upload, so they use a rocket-powered car, and no other set piece in the saga pushes a premise this far while keeping a clear goal. They also survive the trip to space, which is the punchline.

Second is the 2 Fast 2 Furious finish, where Roman and Brian escape the police and take down Verone. It is the most grounded set piece he has, and it gives the friendship its payoff in the garage they open afterward.

Third is the Fast X plane scene. It is a cliffhanger rather than a set piece, so it works best if you watch the film right before Fast Forever arrives.
