Marcus Brody in Indiana Jones: Who He Is and Who Plays Him

Marcus Brody is a recurring ally of Indiana Jones, played by Denholm Elliott in Raiders of the Lost Ark and Indiana Jones and the Last Crusade. He first appears in Raiders of the Lost Ark (1981), directed by Steven Spielberg, where the credits list him as Dr. Marcus Brody and place Elliott eighth in the cast. He returns in Indiana Jones and the Last Crusade (1989), also directed by Spielberg, credited as Marcus Brody and billed third, behind Harrison Ford as Indiana Jones and Sean Connery as Professor Henry Jones.

The jump from eighth billing to third shows how the character grows across the saga. In Raiders he sits in a large supporting cast that includes Karen Allen, Paul Freeman, John Rhys-Davies as Sallah and Ronald Lacey. Marcus Brody's arc centers on The Last Crusade, where he becomes a working partner to Indy on the Grail hunt. Raiders is set in 1936, when Indy escapes a booby-trapped temple in Peru, loses a golden idol to his rival René Belloq, and is then asked by army intelligence to find the Ark of the Covenant before the Nazis do. Denholm Elliott is billed as Dr. Marcus Brody in that cast, which also includes Sallah, the friend Indy joins in Cairo.

The larger part comes in 1938. After Indy recovers Coronado's cross from a collector off the Portuguese coast, he learns that his father Henry has vanished while hunting the Holy Grail. Walter Donovan, who funded Henry's search, hires Indy to carry on, and Indy and Marcus Brody go to Venice together. There they meet Elsa Schneider and find a clue in a catacomb below a library. A secret brotherhood attacks them, and its leader tells Indy that his father is held at a castle.

From there the film moves on to the castle, Berlin, the zeppelin escape and the convoy fight in Hatay, before the Grail temple. The Last Crusade runs 127 minutes and is rated PG-13 in the US.

Marcus is one of Indiana Jones's closest allies, and the clearest picture of that comes from who he travels with. In The Last Crusade the group that finally rides off together is Indy, his father Henry, Marcus and Sallah, which puts Marcus inside the small circle Indy trusts most.

His most direct tie is to Indy himself. Indy and Marcus go to Venice together on the Grail search, and Marcus is the person standing next to him when they meet Elsa Schneider. That makes him the film's witness to Indy's search, rather than a figure kept at a distance.

His link to Professor Henry Jones runs through the quest. Henry is the scholar who disappeared hunting the Grail, and his diary is what sends Indy and Marcus to Venice. The opposing side of the Venice mission is Elsa Schneider, who turns out to be working for the Nazis, and Walter Donovan, who hires Indy and ages to death after choosing the wrong cup. Marcus is on the other side of both of them throughout the search.

Marcus Brody survives the events of The Last Crusade and rides off with the Joneses and Sallah when the Grail is lost. Indy picks the true Grail from among the cups and uses its water to heal his dying father. Elsa falls to her death as the temple collapses, and Henry talks Indy into letting go. The four heroes, Indy, Henry, Marcus and Sallah, then ride into the sunset, which closes the original trilogy.

In my opinion, Marcus Brody's best stretch is the Venice sequence in The Last Crusade, because it is where the film lets him work alongside Indy rather than stand beside him. The pair follow Henry's diary to Elsa Schneider, find the clue in the catacomb under the library, and are then jumped by the secret brotherhood. For a character billed eighth in Raiders, third billing here is a big step up.

My second pick is the final ride. After the temple, the lost Grail and the near fall that Henry talks Indy out of, Marcus, Sallah and the two Joneses leave together. It could be argued that this is the film's way of saying Marcus belongs to the family of heroes, not just the supporting cast.

That being said, this is only my opinion. Sallah is introduced in Cairo in Raiders and shares the finish in The Last Crusade, so the two friends bookend the Grail ride. To see more of Marcus, start with indiana jones and the last crusade, then go back to raiders of the lost ark.
