Sallah in Indiana Jones: Who He Is and Who Plays Him
Sallah in Indiana Jones is Indy's trusted friend in Cairo, played by John Rhys-Davies in three films: Raiders of the Lost Ark (1981), Indiana Jones and the Last Crusade (1989) and Indiana Jones and the Dial of Destiny (2023). He rides off with the Joneses and Marcus Brody at the end of the original trilogy, then returns for the fifth film, 42 years after his first scene.
Who Plays Sallah?
Who Is Sallah in Indiana Jones?
Sallah is a friend of Indiana Jones whom Indy and Marion Ravenwood join in Cairo during the hunt for the Ark of the Covenant in Raiders of the Lost Ark (1981), directed by Steven Spielberg. He is credited simply as Sallah in every film he appears in, so there are no alternate names to track.
Who played Sallah in Indiana Jones? John Rhys-Davies plays him in all three appearances. His billing moves with the size of each film's cast: fourth in Raiders of the Lost Ark, fifth in Indiana Jones and the Last Crusade (1989) and tenth in Indiana Jones and the Dial of Destiny (2023), directed by James Mangold. Harrison Ford leads all three as Indiana Jones.
The Nazis are already searching for the Ark by the time Indy reaches Cairo, and Sallah is the friend who means Indy and Marion do not face that hunt alone. That is the job he holds in the story, and it carries through each of his returns.

Sallah's Story Across the Indiana Jones MoviesSpoilers
Sallah's story runs across three films spread over 42 years of release dates, and it is told entirely through his friendship with Indy. In story order, Temple of Doom (1935) comes before Raiders (1936), but Sallah is not in that film, so his arc starts with the Cairo chapter of Raiders.
Raiders of the Lost Ark (1981). Indy and Marion travel to Cairo, where they join Indy's friend Sallah. This is the middle of the hunt, between the Nepal fight that burns down Marion's bar and the dig for the Well of Souls. The Nazis dig in the wrong spot while Indy uses the staff headpiece to find the true location. The film ends with the Ark crated and lost in a vast government warehouse.
Indiana Jones and the Last Crusade (1989). The third film follows Indy, his father Henry, Marcus Brody and the Grail quest through Venice, Berlin and Hatay. Sallah is billed fifth, and he is there in the closing image: the Joneses, Marcus and Sallah ride off together after the Grail drops into an abyss.
Indiana Jones and the Kingdom of the Crystal Skull (2008). Sallah is not among the first fifteen credited cast members of the fourth film, and its story of Soviet agents, Mutt Williams and the lost city of Akator does not mention him.
Indiana Jones and the Dial of Destiny (2023). The fifth film brings Sallah back, credited as Sallah and played again by John Rhys-Davies. It opens in 1944 with Indy and Basil Shaw held by Nazis aboard a train packed with stolen treasures, then moves to 1969, when Indy is retiring from teaching in New York and his goddaughter Helena Shaw pulls him into the hunt for the Antikythera dial. Karen Allen's Marion is in the cast too, so the fifth film reunites two faces from Raiders.
Sallah's Relationships With Indy and the Rest of the Cast
Sallah's most important relationship is with Indiana Jones, and the films present him as Indy's friend, the man Indy and Marion join in Cairo during the Ark hunt.
He shares the screen with the series' other recurring allies. Marion Ravenwood is with Indy when they join Sallah in Raiders, and Karen Allen's Marion is in the Dial of Destiny cast alongside him. Marcus Brody, played by Denholm Elliott, is the other long running friend, and he is in the closing ride of The Last Crusade with Sallah. Professor Henry Jones, played by Sean Connery, is in that same final group.
On the other side are the villains who make Indy need friends in the first place. In Raiders that means the French archaeologist Dr. René Belloq and the Nazi agent Toht, who are chasing the same Ark. For the wider ensemble, see the Indiana Jones characters hub and the Indiana Jones cast page.
What Happened to Sallah in Indiana Jones?Spoilers
Sallah survives every film he appears in, and none of the plots shows him dying. The last image of the original trilogy has him riding off with Indy, Professor Henry Jones and Marcus Brody after the Grail is lost in The Last Crusade.
Kingdom of the Crystal Skull (2008) leaves him out entirely, and the film offers no explanation for his absence. Dial of Destiny (2023) then credits John Rhys-Davies as Sallah again, tenth in the cast, which puts him back in the story after a 34 year gap since The Last Crusade.
The fifth film was billed as Harrison Ford's last outing as Indy, and Lucasfilm has not announced a sixth film. Any news on Indiana Jones 6 will appear on the next movie page. Until then, his last credited appearance is in Dial of Destiny.
Sallah's Best Moments: A Ranked Opinion
In my opinion, Sallah's best moment is the last shot of The Last Crusade, because it puts him in the closing ride with the Joneses and Marcus Brody. The film has just dropped the Grail into an abyss, and it ends not on the treasure but on the four friends riding away. For a franchise built on lost relics, I think it is a smart choice to let the people be the last thing you see.
Second, I would pick the Cairo arrival in Raiders of the Lost Ark. Indy has just left the Nepal fight behind him and needs a friend more than he needs a map, and Sallah is that friend. I like that the film treats him as a friend before anything else.
Third is the return in Dial of Destiny. John Rhys-Davies had been away from the part for 34 years of release dates, and the film brings him back alongside Karen Allen's Marion, so the 2023 cast carries two links to 1981. That being said, with Sallah billed tenth, I would call it a welcome cameo rather than a full arc.
If you want to see all three, start with the Indiana Jones movies in order guide, or go straight to Raiders of the Lost Ark.
