Rene Belloq Indiana Jones: The French Rival, His Actor and His Fate
The Rene Belloq Indiana Jones rival is Dr. René Belloq, the French archaeologist played by Paul Freeman in Raiders of the Lost Ark (1981). He takes the golden idol from Indy in 1936 Peru, then works alongside the Nazis who are hunting the Ark of the Covenant. He appears in that one film only.

Who Is Rene Belloq in Indiana Jones?
Dr. René Belloq is the French archaeologist who acts as the main human rival to Indiana Jones in Raiders of the Lost Ark (1981), directed by Steven Spielberg. He is played by Paul Freeman, who is billed third in the cast, behind Harrison Ford and Karen Allen. The credits give the name as Dr. René Belloq, and that is the only name the cast list uses for him.
The film introduces him in 1936, in the Peru sequence. Indy escapes a booby trapped temple with a golden idol, and Belloq takes it from him. That exchange sets up the rivalry that carries through the film.
Where is he from? The film presents him as French, and he works in the same field as Indy, which is why the rivalry reads as professional and not just physical. When army intelligence later asks Indy to find the Ark of the Covenant before the Nazis do, Belloq is already on the other side of that race.
If you are looking for him in the later films, you will not find him. He appears only in raiders of the lost ark, and the other four main films, from temple of doom to dial of destiny, move on to different villains. You can see how he fits among them on the indiana jones villains page.

Belloq's Story Arc in Raiders of the Lost ArkSpoilers
Belloq's story arc starts as a petty theft in Peru and ends in a ritual on a remote island, with the Ark of the Covenant pulling him along the whole way.
He is first seen in 1936 at the temple, where he lifts the idol straight out of Indy's hands once the traps have done their work. Back in the United States, the Ark is the next prize, and Belloq is already working with the Nazis who are searching Egypt for it. Indy, meanwhile, has to collect the headpiece from Marion Ravenwood in Nepal and then travel to Cairo, where Sallah joins him. The Nazi dig goes wrong, because they open the ground in the wrong spot, and Indy uses the staff headpiece to find the real site.
Belloq's role hardens at the Well of Souls. Indy reaches the Ark first and has it in hand, but Belloq and the Nazis shut him in the chamber of snakes with Marion. They get out, and Indy chases the Ark across a truck convoy and onto a ship, then rides a German submarine to the island.
There Belloq stands at the center of the ceremony meant to open the Ark, with Indy and Marion bound as witnesses. His arc is a straight line from taking an idol to taking the Ark, which is why the island is where it has to finish.

Belloq's Relationships: Indy, Marion and the Nazis
Belloq's relationships all run through the Ark, and each one puts a different kind of pressure on Indy.
Indiana Jones. Indy and Belloq are rivals in the same trade, and the first round goes to Belloq: he takes the idol Indy recovered in Peru. Later he and the Nazis seal Indy in the Well of Souls. Both men are archaeologists, which is why the feud feels personal. Details on the hero are on the indiana jones character page.
Marion Ravenwood. Marion owns the headpiece that Indy needs, and that makes her the hinge of the middle of the film. Belloq and the Nazis seal her into the Well of Souls with Indy, and on the island she is tied up beside him as a witness to the ceremony. She is played by Karen Allen, and her full profile is at marion ravenwood indiana jones.
The Nazis. Belloq works with them, and that side of the film is crowded. Ronald Lacey plays Major Arnold Toht, who tracks Indy and Marion down in Nepal, and Wolf Kahler plays Colonel Dietrich. Belloq shares the island ceremony with the Nazi soldiers, and they are all after the same object.
What Happens to Belloq? His Death ExplainedSpoilers
Belloq dies on the island at the end of Raiders of the Lost Ark, killed by the spirits that pour out of the Ark when it is opened.
What did he see in the Ark? The film shows the Ark opened during the ceremony, and spirits pour out of it. Indy tells Marion to close her eyes, and the two of them keep their eyes shut while the spirits kill Belloq and the Nazi soldiers. Indy and Marion survive because they do not look.
His death comes from the very object he chased all film. Afterward, Indy and Marion return the Ark to the United States, where government officials thank Indy and then crate the Ark and store it in a huge warehouse, lost among countless other boxes.
Belloq's story ends in Raiders. For the artifacts across all five films, see indiana jones artifacts.
Best Belloq Moments: Where the Rivalry Works
The best Belloq scenes are the three that put him in direct contact with Indy, and in my opinion they work because the film lets him win before it lets him lose.
The idol in Peru. It is a short exchange, but it is the one that defines him. Indy escapes a booby trapped temple with the idol, and Belloq simply collects the result. As a set piece it is all Indy, but as characterization it is all Belloq. That is the moment I would show someone first.
The Well of Souls. Sealing Indy and Marion in a chamber of snakes is a more direct act than taking an idol. It is the point where Belloq stops being a competitor and becomes a killer by proxy, and the film earns it by having Indy find the chamber himself first.
The island ceremony. Belloq and the Nazis plan the ritual, Indy and Marion are tied up as witnesses, and the Ark opens. It could be argued that this is the most carefully built ending of any Indy villain. Mola Ram falls to his death in Temple of Doom, Walter Donovan ages to death in the Last Crusade, Irina Spalko is destroyed by knowledge in Crystal Skull, and Voller is stranded in 212 BC in Dial of Destiny. Belloq is the one who dies precisely because he did what he set out to do.
That being said, he is also the villain with the least screen history outside his own film. If you want to see how the rivalry stacks up, the indiana jones movies ranked page covers where Raiders sits overall.
