Marion Ravenwood in Indiana Jones: Who Plays Her and What Happens to Her
Marion Ravenwood in Indiana Jones is Indy's former love and later his wife, played by Karen Allen in Raiders of the Lost Ark (1981), Indiana Jones and the Kingdom of the Crystal Skull (2008) and Indiana Jones and the Dial of Destiny (2023). She does not appear in Indiana Jones and the Temple of Doom or Indiana Jones and the Last Crusade.
Who Plays Marion Ravenwood?
Who Is Marion Ravenwood in Indiana Jones?
Marion Ravenwood is the former love of Indiana Jones, introduced in Raiders of the Lost Ark (1981), directed by Steven Spielberg, and played by Karen Allen. She is billed second in that film, directly behind Harrison Ford, and she is credited as Marion Ravenwood. When Indy is sent after the Ark of the Covenant in 1936, he learns that the headpiece he needs to locate the Ark's resting place is owned by Marion in Nepal. So, the first thing we see of her is not a damsel waiting to be found but a woman with her own bar, holding the headpiece Indy needs.
That bar scene sets the tone for the character. A Nazi agent, Major Arnold Toht, tracks Indy and Marion down, and the fight leaves her bar in flames. From there she travels with Indy to Cairo, where they join his friend Sallah.
Who played Marion Ravenwood? Karen Allen played her in all three of her appearances. She returned in Indiana Jones and the Kingdom of the Crystal Skull (2008), also directed by Spielberg, where she is billed third and credited as Marion Ravenwood. She returned again in Indiana Jones and the Dial of Destiny (2023), directed by James Mangold, where she is billed ninth and credited simply as Marion.
She is absent from Indiana Jones and the Temple of Doom (1984) and Indiana Jones and the Last Crusade (1989). Temple of Doom is set in 1935, a year before Raiders, so in story order it comes before she appears at all. If you are unsure where each film sits, the Indiana Jones movies in order guide lays out both orders, and the Indiana Jones cast page covers the rest of the ensemble.

Marion Ravenwood's Story Arc Across the FilmsSpoilers
Marion's arc runs from Indy's old flame and fellow survivor in Raiders, to the mother of his son in Kingdom of the Crystal Skull, to his estranged wife in Dial of Destiny. It spans three films and 1936 to 1969 in story time.
Raiders of the Lost Ark (1936). After the bar fight in Nepal, Marion travels with Indy to Cairo. There she is apparently killed in a Nazi plot, while the Nazis dig in the wrong spot and Indy uses the staff headpiece to find the true location. She is not dead. When Belloq and the Nazis seal Indy inside the Well of Souls, a chamber of snakes, Marion is sealed in with him, and the pair escape together. Indy then chases the Ark by truck convoy and ship, boards a German submarine and reaches a remote island. Belloq and the Nazis stage a ceremony to open the Ark, with Indy and Marion tied up as witnesses. Indy tells her to close her eyes, and both survive while the spirits destroy Belloq and the Nazi soldiers.
Kingdom of the Crystal Skull (1957). Marion is in the Soviet camp in the Amazon when Indy and Mutt Williams are brought there, and they meet Colonel Irina Spalko, Mac and the mentally damaged Harold Oxley alongside her. It is here that Marion tells Indy that Mutt is his son. She escapes with the group, travels to Akator, and flees as the city collapses and a flying saucer leaves for another dimension.
Dial of Destiny (1969). Marion does not drive the chase, which follows Indy, his goddaughter Helena Shaw, Voller and the Antikythera dial through New York, Tangier and Greece. She is instead the person Indy has lost along the way, and the film's last stretch is about getting him back to her.
Marion Ravenwood and Indiana Jones: Who Is She Tied To?
Marion's strongest tie is to Indiana Jones himself, and her other relationships all run through him. Their history is already in the past when Raiders begins, since he arrives in Nepal looking for a former love, and the bar scene is where the two meet again over the headpiece.
Her link to Mutt Williams is the biggest reveal in her story. In Kingdom of the Crystal Skull she tells Indy that Mutt is his son. Her marriage to Indy is the other major tie, and Dial of Destiny describes it as estranged, with Helena Shaw helping Indy make peace with her.
In Raiders she also crosses paths with the villains. Major Toht tracks her down in Nepal, and Dr. René Belloq and the Nazis keep her as a witness at the Ark ceremony. In Cairo she meets Sallah, played by John Rhys-Davies, who is billed fourth in Raiders and also appears in Dial of Destiny. For the wider cast around her, see the list of Indiana Jones characters, the Indiana Jones character page for the hero, and the page for Helena Shaw.
What Happened to Marion Ravenwood? Death, Marriage and Her Final SceneSpoilers
Marion Ravenwood does not die in any of the Indiana Jones films, and her last scene in Dial of Destiny has her back with Indy. That answers the most common search, and it is a little surprising given how often the series threatens her.
The nearest she comes is Raiders of the Lost Ark. She is apparently killed in a Nazi plot in Cairo, but the film later shows her alive and sealed inside the Well of Souls with Indy. She then survives the Ark ceremony on the island by keeping her eyes shut.
In Kingdom of the Crystal Skull, the film ends on a wedding. Indy and Marion marry after the escape from Akator, once Indy has been reinstated at Marshall College and promoted to associate dean.
Dial of Destiny, released in 2023 and billed as Harrison Ford's last outing as Indy, picks up the marriage later and in a poorer state. By 1969 Marion is Indy's estranged wife. Back in New York, Indy recovers while Helena helps him make peace with her, and the film closes with the two of them together and Indy reaching for his fedora. As of November 2026 no sixth film has been announced, so the status quo for Marion is that reconciliation. For any news, see Indiana Jones 6.
Marion Ravenwood's Best Moments, Ranked by My Taste
In my opinion, Marion's best moments are the ones where she holds her own against Indy rather than simply being rescued by him.
The bar in Nepal. It is her entrance, and it works because the plot needs her. She holds the headpiece, so Indy has to deal with her on her terms. When Toht arrives and the fight leaves the bar in flames, the scene turns into a proper set piece.
The Well of Souls. Being sealed in a chamber of snakes would flatten most characters. Marion stays in the action, and the escape is a joint effort, which I prefer to the version where she waits for a hero.
Eyes closed on the island. Indy's instruction to close her eyes is the film's quietest beat, and it is the reason both of them live. It also shows how much she trusts him.
The reveal in the Amazon. Telling Indy that Mutt is his son is the biggest dramatic moment of Kingdom of the Crystal Skull, in my view, and it happens in the middle of a Soviet camp. It could be argued that it matters more than the flying saucer.
Dial of Destiny's closing scene. After a film about Indy wanting to stay in the past, the last image is Marion and Indy together in the present. That being said, it works because the earlier films gave Marion enough history to make it land. To see where those films land overall, check Indiana Jones movies ranked.
