Indiana Jones Villains: Every Main Enemy in the Saga
There is no single main villain in Indiana Jones: each of the five films brings its own, from René Belloq in Raiders of the Lost Ark (1981) to Dr. Voller in Indiana Jones and the Dial of Destiny (2023). The Nazis are the closest thing the saga has to a standing enemy, since they drive three of the five films, while Indiana Jones and the Temple of Doom uses a Thuggee cult and Indiana Jones and the Kingdom of the Crystal Skull uses Soviet agents.

Who Is the Main Villain in Indiana Jones?
No single character is the main villain in Indiana Jones, because the saga hands each film a new antagonist and a new artifact to fight over. The Nazis drive Raiders of the Lost Ark, The Last Crusade and Dial of Destiny, a Thuggee cult drives Temple of Doom, and Soviet agents drive Kingdom of the Crystal Skull. So, if you want one name, the honest answer is the Nazis as a group, and if you want one face, the pick depends on the film.
This list runs in release order, one section per villain, the same order you will find on our Indiana Jones movies in order page. Keep in mind that Temple of Doom is set in 1935, a year before Raiders, so its villains come first in story order (the Indiana Jones timeline lays that out). Every section after this one reveals how its villain ends, so each carries a spoiler flag. For the heroes on the other side of these fights, see our Indiana Jones characters page, and for the objects they chase, our Indiana Jones artifacts guide. No villain has been named for Indiana Jones 6, because no sixth film has been announced.
Dr. René Belloq: The Rival Who Mirrors IndySpoilers
Dr. René Belloq is the villain of Raiders of the Lost Ark (1981), directed by Steven Spielberg, and he is played by Paul Freeman, billed third. He is a French archaeologist and Indy's professional rival, which makes him a dark reflection of the hero rather than a simple thug.
Belloq announces himself in the opening in Peru, where he takes the golden idol Indy has just recovered from a booby trapped temple. He then works with the Nazis, who are digging in Egypt for the Ark of the Covenant, and he and the Nazis seal Indy inside the Well of Souls with Marion Ravenwood. The film builds to a ceremony on a remote island, where Belloq plans to open the Ark with Indy and Marion tied up as witnesses. Indy tells Marion to close her eyes, and the spirits that pour out of the Ark kill Belloq and the Nazis around him. For more on him, see rene belloq indiana jones, and for the full film, Raiders of the Lost Ark.
Major Arnold Toht and Colonel Dietrich: The Nazi Muscle in RaidersSpoilers
Major Arnold Toht and Colonel Dietrich are the Nazi officers who stand behind Belloq in Raiders of the Lost Ark, played by Ronald Lacey and Wolf Kahler, billed fifth and sixth. Toht is the one who tracks Indy and Marion to Nepal, where a fight leaves Marion's bar in flames.
That Nepal scene matters because Marion owns the headpiece Indy needs to find the Ark's resting place, so the Nazis reach her right after he does. Toht is the face of the hunt, and Dietrich, credited as Colonel Dietrich, is the second Nazi officer in the cast. Neither man is the film's main threat, since Belloq holds that role, but together they give the pursuit its menace. The Nazi side as a whole does not survive the ceremony on the island, when the Ark is opened and its spirits destroy Belloq and the soldiers.
Mola Ram: The Thuggee High Priest of Pankot PalaceSpoilers
Mola Ram, played by Amrish Puri (billed fourth), is the high priest of the Thuggee cult in Indiana Jones and the Temple of Doom (1984), directed by Steven Spielberg. Because the film takes place in 1935, he is the first villain in story order, a year ahead of anything in Raiders.
The trail to him starts in Mayapore, where starving villagers say their sacred stone is gone and their children have been taken. Indy follows that lead to Pankot Palace, and a hidden temple under it is where Mola Ram works: sacrifices to a dark god, children forced to dig in a mine, and a young Maharaja whose mind the cult has bent to its will. Indy is captured, and a potion leaves him in a trance until Short Round snaps him out of it.
The payoff is a set piece in three parts: a mine cart chase, a flood, and a duel on a rope bridge above a gorge. Indy cuts the ropes, cultists drop to the crocodiles, and Mola Ram hangs on until the sacred stones burn his hands and he falls. Roshan Seth, billed fifth, plays Chattar Lal in the same film. For the full story, see Temple of Doom.
Lao Che: The Shanghai Crime Boss Who Starts the ChaseSpoilers
Lao Che is the Shanghai crime boss who opens Temple of Doom, played by Roy Chiao, billed seventh. He is not the film's final villain, but he sets everything in motion.
In 1935 Indy makes a deal with him at a nightclub, and the deal turns into a poisoning attempt and a wild chase. Indy escapes with the singer Willie Scott and his young sidekick Short Round, only to find that the plane they board secretly belongs to Lao Che. The pilots bail out and leave the plane to crash, and the trio escapes by raft down a mountain and into a river in India. That raft ride is what lands them in Mayapore, so Lao Che is, in a strange way, the reason Indy meets Mola Ram at all.
Walter Donovan: The Backer Who Wanted the Grail for HimselfSpoilers
Walter Donovan, played by Julian Glover (billed sixth), is the villain of Indiana Jones and the Last Crusade (1989), directed by Steven Spielberg, and his menace comes from how helpful he seems at first. He pays for the hunt for the Holy Grail, and when Henry Jones disappears, he is the one who asks Indy to take over the search.
That trust is the point of the character. Donovan stays in the background through Venice and the chase after the diary, and the reveal that he wants the Grail for himself arrives at the temple, where he shoots Henry to push Indy toward the deadly traps. The Grail Knight warns that only one cup is the true Grail. Elsa passes Donovan the wrong one, and he ages to death on the spot. Indy picks correctly and uses the water to save his father. See Indiana Jones and the Last Crusade for the film, and henry jones sr for the man Donovan shoots.
Elsa Schneider: The Ally Who Was Never an AllySpoilers
Elsa, credited as Elsa and called Dr. Elsa Schneider in the story, is the double agent of Indiana Jones and the Last Crusade, played by Alison Doody, billed fourth. Indy and Marcus Brody meet her in Venice, where Henry's diary leads them, and she helps them find a clue in a catacomb below a library.
She then goes with Indy to infiltrate the castle where his father is held, and there it turns out she has been working for the Nazis all along. Her arc ends at the Grail temple. Elsa tries to take the Grail out, the temple collapses, and she falls to her death, while Indy nearly falls after her until Henry talks him into letting go.
Irina Spalko: The Soviet Colonel Chasing the Crystal SkullSpoilers
Irina Spalko is the villain of Indiana Jones and the Kingdom of the Crystal Skull (2008), directed by Steven Spielberg, and she is played by Cate Blanchett, billed second. She is a Soviet colonel who wants the crystal skull's power for the Soviet Union.
The film is set in 1957, and it opens with Spalko's agents seizing Indy and his partner Mac in Nevada and making Indy help them find a mummified alien at a secret government site. Later she hunts the skull through Peru and the Amazon, and she follows the heroes to the lost city of Akator. There she returns the skull to its skeleton and demands knowledge from the thirteen interdimensional beings. They give her so much that she is destroyed. She is the saga's only Soviet main villain, and the film is Kingdom of the Crystal Skull.
George 'Mac' McHale: The Partner Who Turns on IndySpoilers
George 'Mac' McHale is Indy's partner in Indiana Jones and the Kingdom of the Crystal Skull, played by Ray Winstone, billed fifth, and he turns on Indy early in the film. Soviet agents seize him together with Indy in the Nevada desert, but Mac betrays his partner, and Indy escapes and survives an atomic test blast by hiding in a lead lined refrigerator.
Mac then reappears at the Soviet camp in the Amazon, working alongside Spalko. His end is tied to hers. When the portal opens at Akator, Mac and the soldiers are pulled in, while Spalko is destroyed by the knowledge the beings pour into her. He is a smaller villain than Spalko, but his betrayal comes from the partner Indy arrived with.
Dr. Voller: The Nazi Scientist Who Wants to Rewrite the WarSpoilers
Dr. Voller, full name Jürgen Voller, is played by Mads Mikkelsen (billed third) in Indiana Jones and the Dial of Destiny (2023), directed by James Mangold. He is a scientist who served the Nazis and has spent decades hiding in plain sight.
The film opens in 1944 on a train loaded with stolen treasures, where Voller locates one half of the Antikythera dial, the device linked to Archimedes. Skip to 1969 and he lives in the United States under a false name, working for NASA, a cover that gives him the resources to chase Indy's half through New York, Tangier and Greece, and later to a wreck off Sicily.
What sets him apart from earlier villains is the goal. Belloq and Donovan want an object, but Voller wants to go back to 1939 and change how the war went. The plan fails because the dial's reading was off: his plane passes through a time fissure and lands in 212 BC, in the middle of the Siege of Syracuse, where he is left behind. More on the film is on the Dial of Destiny page.
Adolf Hitler and the Nazis: The Enemy the Saga Keeps Returning ToSpoilers
The Nazis are the most frequent enemy in Indiana Jones, appearing in Raiders of the Lost Ark, Indiana Jones and the Last Crusade and Indiana Jones and the Dial of Destiny. In Raiders, Army intelligence asks Indy to find the Ark because Hitler's agents are searching for it in Egypt.
In The Last Crusade, the Nazis follow Henry's diary to Hatay, where Indy destroys their convoy and a tank plunges off a cliff, and Indy gets the diary back in Berlin during a rally. In Dial of Destiny, Voller carries the Nazi cause into 1969 and wants to go back to 1939 and change how the war turned out. In the first two films the Nazis chase an object of power and Indy stays ahead of them, while the third gives them a plan to rewrite history. Temple of Doom and Kingdom of the Crystal Skull swap in a cult and the Soviets. See the Indiana Jones movies hub for every film.
Indiana Jones Villains Ranked: My Top PicksSpoilers
In my opinion, the best Indiana Jones villain is René Belloq, followed by Mola Ram and Walter Donovan, so those are my top 3 villains. Rankings like this are subjective, and I have weighed menace, a personal link to Indy, and how well each villain's end fits the film's story.
Belloq takes first place because he is the only villain who mirrors Indy, an archaeologist who wants the same prize for worse reasons, and Raiders gives him the idol theft in Peru, the sealed Well of Souls and the island ceremony. Mola Ram is second, since Temple of Doom is the darkest film and he carries it with sacrifices, enslaved children and a brainwashed Maharaja. It could be argued that he is the most purely evil of the group, and the film gives him no softer side. Donovan is third because his betrayal lands hard after he spends the first half as a trusted backer, and his ageing death is a payoff the saga has not topped. Spalko is fourth for Cate Blanchett's commitment, and Voller is fifth for a plan that fits the Dial of Destiny story. Elsa, Mac and Lao Che follow, and Toht and Dietrich round out the list as Nazi muscle rather than architects.

FAQs
Who is the main villain in Indiana Jones?
There is no single main villain, because each of the five films has its own. René Belloq leads in Raiders of the Lost Ark, Mola Ram in Temple of Doom, Walter Donovan in The Last Crusade, Irina Spalko in Kingdom of the Crystal Skull and Dr. Voller in Dial of Destiny. The Nazis are the most frequent enemy overall, appearing in three of the five films.
Who are the top 3 Indiana Jones villains?
In my opinion, the top 3 Indiana Jones villains are René Belloq, Mola Ram and Walter Donovan, in that order. Belloq is Indy's mirror as a rival archaeologist, Mola Ram runs the cult in Temple of Doom, and Donovan hides his betrayal until the Grail temple.
Is Mola Ram pure evil?
The film presents him that way. Mola Ram leads a Thuggee cult that makes human sacrifices, holds the village children as slave labor in a mine, and brainwashes the young Maharaja. He is played by Amrish Puri, and the story gives him no moment of mercy before he falls to his death on the broken rope bridge.
Which Indiana Jones villains are Nazis?
The Nazi villains are Major Arnold Toht and Colonel Dietrich in Raiders of the Lost Ark, Elsa Schneider in The Last Crusade, who turns out to be working for the Nazis, and Dr. Voller in Dial of Destiny. Belloq works alongside the Nazis in Raiders.
Who is the villain in Indiana Jones and the Kingdom of the Crystal Skull?
The villain is Colonel Irina Spalko, a Soviet officer played by Cate Blanchett. Her ally is George 'Mac' McHale, played by Ray Winstone, who betrays Indy early in the film.
