Who Plays August Walker?

Who Is August Walker in Mission: Impossible?

August Walker is a CIA field agent in Mission: Impossible: Fallout (2018), directed by Christopher McQuarrie, and he is played by Henry Cavill, who is billed second behind Tom Cruise. Fallout is the sixth film in release order.

The film introduces him as a heavy-handed agent rather than a friend. After Ethan Hunt's team loses three plutonium cores in Berlin, CIA director Erika Sloane insists that her own agent shadows the mission, and that agent is Walker. For the IMF, that means a partner nobody chose and nobody fully trusts, which is a bit like being handed a new driver halfway through a road trip and being told he keeps the keys.

His credited name is August Walker, and that is the name the film uses for him in the open. The alias John Lark belongs to the buyer the Apostles are working with, and the story reveals how the two names connect. If you want the wider cast around him, the Mission: Impossible cast page lists every returning and new player, and the Mission: Impossible characters page covers the rest of the ensemble.

August Walker's Story Arc in FalloutSpoilers

Walker's arc covers a single film, and it moves from minder to suspect to villain. He is attached to the mission only after the Berlin failure, when the Apostles walk off with the plutonium cores and CIA director Erika Sloane decides her own man should ride along with Ethan Hunt.

The first real test of that arrangement comes in Paris, where the team plays brokers to reach the White Widow. Ethan promises her Solomon Lane in return for the cores, Lane slips free, and Walker is left watching an operation he did not design fall apart.

Suspicion then hardens into proof. Ethan works out that Walker is the buyer John Lark, and Walker answers by going after Julia, Ethan's ex-wife. The team heads for a medical camp near Kashmir, where the bombs are being prepared, and the pursuit by helicopter becomes the last stretch of Walker's story.

August Walker's Relationships With Ethan, Sloane and Lane

Walker's most important relationship is with Ethan Hunt, and it begins as an enforced partnership and ends as a pursuit. Ethan is first the subject of Walker's supervision and later the target of his scheme, which is why the Kashmir chase feels personal rather than procedural.

His link to Erika Sloane, played by Angela Bassett, is professional. She is the CIA director who insists that her own agent shadows Ethan, so Walker enters the story as her choice. Solomon Lane, played by Sean Harris, is the other side of the web, because Lane's remnant group, the Apostles, was working with John Lark to buy the plutonium cores.

The film also ties Walker to the wider IMF team. Ilsa Faust is cleared of suspicion by the end, Ethan's team races to the Kashmir camp, and Walker's threat to Julia, played by Michelle Monaghan, is what raises the stakes for Ethan's personal storyline.

How Does August Walker Die?Spoilers

August Walker is killed in the Kashmir helicopter chase of Fallout, when Ethan Hunt flies his craft straight into Walker's. Nothing in the film suggests he survives.

With Walker gone, the last stretch turns to the bombs. Ethan fights his way into the camp and disarms the final device with seconds on the clock, so the plutonium is never used. The aftermath is quiet by comparison: Lane goes to MI6, Ilsa Faust is cleared, and Ethan parts on good terms with Julia, who has built a new life.

Best August Walker Moments in Fallout

In my opinion, Walker's best moments are the ones where the audience is still deciding what he is. The first is his arrival: a CIA minder forced onto the team after the Berlin failure sets up a tension that the Paris sequence then feeds, because every decision Ethan makes comes with an observer attached.

The second is the turn from suspicion to confirmation. Ethan suspects him, and the reveal that Walker is John Lark lands because the film has treated him as a blunt instrument all along. It could be argued that this is the franchise's familiar insider betrayal done with more physical menace. Mission: Impossible (1996) exposed Jim Phelps as the mole, and Mission: Impossible III exposed the IMF figure Musgrave as a traitor working with Davian. Walker is the third version of that idea, and the most direct.

The third is the helicopter finale. Ethan crashing his craft into Walker's is the franchise's kind of climax, and production reporting notes Cruise flying a helicopter for the film. Perhaps the best thing about it is that it ends Walker the way he lived in the story, in a collision with Ethan's plan.
