Who Is Gabriel in the Mission: Impossible Series?
Gabriel is the principal antagonist of the final two Mission: Impossible films, played by Esai Morales. He is credited simply as Gabriel, with no alternate name, and Morales is billed seventh in Mission: Impossible: Dead Reckoning Part One and fifth in Mission: Impossible: The Final Reckoning. Christopher McQuarrie directed both, and Tom Cruise stars as Ethan Hunt.
Did Gabriel appear in Mission Impossible 1? No. The villains of Mission: Impossible (1996) are the traitor Jim Phelps and the arms dealer Max, and Gabriel does not enter the saga until Dead Reckoning, 27 years later. If you are planning a marathon, the Mission Impossible movies in order guide shows where those two films sit.
The simplest way to place him is through the Entity. The Final Reckoning describes him as the man who used to act for the rogue artificial intelligence that is taking control of nuclear systems around the world. The Entity is the machine, and Gabriel is the person working its levers in the field. For the wider ensemble, see the Mission Impossible cast page and the Mission Impossible characters index.

Gabriel's Story Arc Across Two FilmsSpoilers
Gabriel's arc runs from a party in Venice to a biplane chase, and it is built almost entirely out of pursuit. In Dead Reckoning the Entity has sunk the Russian submarine Sevastopol, and Ethan Hunt is hunting the two halves of a key tied to it. Gabriel first steps into the story at the Venice party hosted by the arms dealer Alanna Mitsopolis, who holds the second key half. There he warns that he will take the key if Ilsa Faust or Grace is killed, and then he kills Ilsa.
The pursuit moves onto the Orient Express. Gabriel kills the engine crew and sabotages the controls, so the train becomes a trap with no driver. The intelligence director Denlinger reveals that the Entity began as a cyber weapon built to test whether it could sabotage the Sevastopol, and that the joined key opens its source code. Gabriel then kills Denlinger and goes after Paris. He ends up with the key and blows up a bridge ahead of the train, so the cars fall into a gorge. Hunt takes the key back from him and escapes by speed wing.
In The Final Reckoning the Entity is spreading its hold over the world's nuclear arsenals, helped by a doomsday cult. Hunt keeps the source code key out of reach and hunts Gabriel, but Gabriel captures him and wants the Podkova module from the wreck of the Sevastopol, which would let him control the Entity. Hunt escapes. Later, at the digital bunker in South Africa, Gabriel attacks with a nuclear device and then flees with the Poison Pill, the malware Luther Stickell gave the team. Hunt follows, and the chase becomes the film's closing set piece. You can see how this fits the larger saga on the Mission Impossible timeline.
Gabriel's Relationships With Ethan Hunt, Ilsa and the Entity
Gabriel's defining relationship is with Ethan Hunt, and the two films play it as a chase in which each man wants what the other holds. So, who is Gabriel to Ethan Hunt? He is the adversary Hunt cannot afford to lose track of, whether Hunt is dropping onto the Orient Express in Dead Reckoning or sitting captive in The Final Reckoning. Gabriel wants what Hunt carries: first the key, then the Poison Pill and the Podkova.
His link to the Entity gives him purpose. The Final Reckoning describes him as the man who used to act for it, and his goals in both films revolve around controlling it or its source code.
His ties to the people around Hunt are brutal. He kills Ilsa Faust in Venice, and Ilsa had been a returning favorite since Rogue Nation and Fallout. He goes after Paris on the train, and she dies after the wreck. Grace is named alongside Ilsa in his warning at the Venice party, and later she is the one who traps the Entity.
The damage to Hunt's circle carries into the last film. Gabriel traps Luther Stickell with a bomb and steals the Poison Pill, and Luther sacrifices himself to limit a nuclear blast. At the bunker, Benji Dunn is shot during Gabriel's attack.
Does Gabriel Die in Mission: Impossible?Spoilers
Yes, Gabriel dies at the end of The Final Reckoning, in a crash that closes the biplane chase. After he flees the bunker with the Poison Pill, Hunt pursues him and gets the Poison Pill back, and Gabriel is killed when the chase ends in a crash. Hunt then fits the Poison Pill into the Podkova mid-air, and Grace traps the Entity before it can launch the nuclear weapons.
His death does not wrap up the story by itself. The Podkova is destroyed, Luther's farewell message plays, Briggs makes amends and the team goes its separate ways, with Grace handing Hunt the drive that holds the Entity. Release details for the final film are on its film page, and if you are wondering whether the saga continues, the Mission Impossible 9 page covers the current status.
Gabriel's Best Moments, Explained
In my opinion, Gabriel works best when the film gives him a physical problem to solve, and the Orient Express sequence in Dead Reckoning is the clearest case. Killing the engine crew and sabotaging the controls turns a luxury train into a machine nobody can stop, which is a villain plan that Hunt can fight with his hands rather than a speech. The bridge detonation that drops the carriages into the gorge then forces the heroes into a set piece that is built around gravity, not gadgets.
The Venice party is the other moment I would point to. Gabriel's warning that he will take the key if Ilsa or Grace is killed sounds like a conditional threat, and then he kills Ilsa anyway. It tells the audience early that his rules are decorative. If you have only seen the earlier Mission Impossible 3 and want to compare a villain who plays the long game on a personal level, that film's Owen Davian is the closest match in the saga.
His best finish is the biplane chase in The Final Reckoning. The production shot the biplane work on location in South Africa, according to the American Society of Cinematographers, and the chase is the closest the series gets to a duel between two vehicles with a single object at stake. It could be argued that Gabriel is a less layered villain than Solomon Lane, but that is partly because the Entity does the thinking for him. As a physical threat that Hunt has to chase across a train, a bunker and the sky, he is one of the better ones.
