Benji Mission Impossible: Who Is Benji Dunn?

Benji Dunn is an IMF technical specialist who becomes one of Ethan Hunt's closest allies, and Simon Pegg plays him in every appearance. The credits use two names: he is billed as "Benji" in Mission: Impossible III and Mission: Impossible: Ghost Protocol, and as "Benji Dunn" from Mission: Impossible: Rogue Nation onward. So, if you are looking for his real name, Benji Dunn is the character's full credited name and Simon Pegg is the actor.

He is not in Mission: Impossible (1996) or Mission: Impossible 2, so the first two films of the saga run without him. His six films are Mission: Impossible III, Ghost Protocol, Rogue Nation, Fallout, Dead Reckoning Part One and The Final Reckoning. That gives him a run from 2006 to 2025, which makes him a handy thread to follow if you want to watch the saga through one supporting character. For the full line up, see Mission: Impossible characters.

Benji moves from a billed supporting credit in 2006 to a team member in the 2025 finale, and the step up happens in Ghost Protocol. In Mission: Impossible III (2006), directed by J.J. Abrams, Pegg is billed ninth as Benji, a small part in the film that introduces him.

In Mission: Impossible: Ghost Protocol (2011), directed by Brad Bird, he is billed third. Agent Jane Carter and tech specialist Benji Dunn break Hunt out of a Moscow prison, and after the Kremlin bombing the IMF is disavowed. Benji then goes to Dubai with Hunt, Jane and the analyst William Brandt to stop the launch codes being sold, which is the mission built around Hunt climbing the outside of the Burj Khalifa.

In Mission: Impossible: Rogue Nation (2015), directed by Christopher McQuarrie, Hunt is a fugitive after the Senate dissolves the IMF, and he draws his old friend Benji into the hunt for the Syndicate. Benji follows him to the Vienna opera and Casablanca, secretly copies the data from the underwater vault, and is later kidnapped by Solomon Lane's men. Mission: Impossible: Fallout (2018) bills him fourth, as the team tries to track three stolen plutonium cores.

In Mission: Impossible: Dead Reckoning Part One (2023), the film closes with Ethan, having escaped by speed wing, meeting up with Benji. In Mission: Impossible: The Final Reckoning (2025), he is on the team that fights the Entity, and he is in the thick of the finale at the South African bunker.

Benji's most important bond is with Ethan Hunt, and Rogue Nation spells it out by calling him Hunt's old friend. After the IMF is dissolved, Hunt calls in that old friend for help, and later offers himself in exchange for Benji, who is wired to a bomb.

He works alongside Luther Stickell, the fellow IMF regular who supplies the Poison Pill malware in The Final Reckoning, which the whole team depends on. In Ghost Protocol his teammates are Jane Carter and William Brandt. In Rogue Nation the Syndicate plot brings in Ilsa Faust and Solomon Lane, with Ilsa working as Hunt's ally. In the last two films he works with Grace, the thief who steals the first key half from Hunt in Dead Reckoning and traps the Entity in The Final Reckoning. The full team structure is covered on the IMF team Mission: Impossible page.

Benji does not die in any of his six films: he is shot at the bunker in The Final Reckoning, but the film ends with the team going their separate ways. The characters who die in that finale include Luther, who sacrifices himself to limit a nuclear blast, and Gabriel, who dies in the biplane crash. Benji is not among them.

In Rogue Nation the danger is more direct, because Lane's men kidnap him and wire him to a bomb. Hunt trades himself for Benji and a chase through London follows. Neither moment ends in his death. His status at the end of the saga is therefore alive, though wounded in the last film. There is no official announcement of another Mission: Impossible film as of November 2026, so his story has no confirmed continuation. Check Mission: Impossible 9 for the latest.

In my opinion, Benji's best moment comes in Rogue Nation, the film where he stops being the voice on the end of a headset and becomes the reason the plot works. He secretly copies the vault data, so when Ilsa's boss Atlee destroys the original, Hunt still has something to chase. That one decision drives the rest of the film.

My second pick is the bomb scene in London, since Hunt is willing to give himself up for Benji, which tells you what the writers think Benji is worth. Third is the Dubai mission in Ghost Protocol, where Benji is part of the small, disavowed team that has to make the Burj Khalifa climb pay off. It could be argued that this is where Pegg's lighter touch settles into the series, with a world ending plot on one side and a joke on the other.

Perhaps the most underrated moment is the one that closes Dead Reckoning, when Ethan meets Benji after the speed wing escape. It is a quiet beat after a train wreck, and it reminds you that Benji has been with Hunt since 2006. If you want to see Benji at his best, start with Rogue Nation.
