Who Plays Mutt Williams?

Who Is Mutt Williams in Indiana Jones?

Mutt Williams is the young greaser who walks into Indiana Jones' life in 1957 asking for help, and Shia LaBeouf plays him in Kingdom of the Crystal Skull. LaBeouf is billed fourth, behind Harrison Ford, Cate Blanchett and Karen Allen. Mutt finds Indy after the Nevada desert sequence and the atomic test blast, just as Indy is put on leave from Marshall College.

Mutt's errand is personal. He tells Indy that Indy's old friend Harold Oxley disappeared in Peru after finding a crystal skull while searching for the lost city of Akator. That request sends the two of them toward Peru and drives the rest of the film.

If you are looking for other sidekicks in the saga, the closest comparisons are Short Round in Temple of Doom and Teddy in Dial of Destiny. Mutt is the only one of the three who is also family to the hero. The full cast of the series sits on the Indiana Jones cast page, and the wider roster is on Indiana Jones characters.

Mutt Williams' Story Arc in Kingdom of the Crystal SkullSpoilers

Mutt Williams starts Kingdom of the Crystal Skull (2008) as an errand runner and ends it as one of the four people who walk out of Akator. His story begins at Marshall College in 1957, where he tells a newly sidelined Indy that Harold Oxley vanished in Peru after finding a crystal skull on the hunt for the lost city of Akator.

The middle of the arc is a run of pursuits. Soviet agents chase the pair, and Oxley's clues lead them to an explorer's tomb in Peru where a skull sits waiting. Capture follows, and Mutt lands in an Amazon camp alongside Indy, Colonel Irina Spalko, Mac, a mentally damaged Oxley and Marion Ravenwood. In that camp Marion tells Indy that Mutt is his son, and the film's central relationship changes in a single line.

The last stretch is the trip to Akator with the skull. The group learns it belongs to one of thirteen interdimensional beings that ancient peoples once worshipped. Spalko demands their knowledge and is destroyed by it, while Mutt, Indy, Marion and Oxley get out before the city falls apart.

Was Mutt Williams Indiana Jones' Son?

Yes, Mutt Williams is the son of Indiana Jones and Marion Ravenwood, and the film delivers that fact in the Amazon camp when Marion tells Indy that Mutt is his son. Marion first appears in Raiders of the Lost Ark (1981), directed by Steven Spielberg, and Karen Allen returns as her here, so the reveal ties the 2008 film back to the first one. You can read more on the Marion Ravenwood Indiana Jones page.

The relationship that matters most is with Indy himself. Mutt arrives as a stranger asking a favor, and the two spend most of the film as partners in a chase before they know the truth. As such, the reveal changes how the earlier scenes read. For the hero's own profile, see the Indiana Jones character page.

Mutt also stands between the other players in the camp scene. Spalko and Mac are the antagonists, and Oxley is the reason Mutt went looking for Indy in the first place. In my opinion, that makes Mutt the connective tissue of the plot: he links the missing professor, the skull and Marion to Indy in one move. For the full list of antagonists, see Indiana Jones villains.

Did Mutt Williams Die in Indiana Jones?Spoilers

Mutt Williams lives. When Akator collapses he leaves with Indy, Marion and Oxley, and it is Spalko, not Mutt, who is consumed by the beings' knowledge.

The aftermath is quiet. Oxley regains his sanity, Indy returns to Marshall College as associate dean, and the film ends on the wedding of Indy and Marion, with Mutt now part of the family.

His later whereabouts are not shown. Dial of Destiny (2023), directed by James Mangold, jumps to 1969 and builds its story around Indy, Helena Shaw and the villain Voller. Mutt is not in its plot, and Shia LaBeouf is not among its top 15 billed cast. If you are wondering where the series goes next, Indiana Jones 6 has no announced film or date.

Best Mutt Williams Moments

In my opinion, the best Mutt moment is his first scene with Indy, because it hands the film its mission in one conversation: Oxley is missing in Peru, a crystal skull is involved and Akator is the goal. It is an efficient setup, and it gives a character who is new to the saga a clear reason to be there.

The second is the Amazon camp scene. It could be argued that this is the most important beat in Mutt's story, since Marion's line about Indy's son recasts the whole chase and lets Karen Allen's return carry real weight.

The third is the escape from Akator. Mutt runs out with Indy, Marion and Oxley as the city collapses, so the family leaves together and the film earns its closing wedding.

That being said, Mutt is a character with one film. If you want a younger partner done at its most playful, Temple of Doom and Short Round are the better starting point. If you want Mutt in context, the Indiana Jones movies in order page shows where his film sits, and the Indiana Jones timeline places 1957 in the story. All five main films are listed on Indiana Jones movies.
