Mission: Impossible - Rogue Nation Trailer
What Is the Plot of Mission: Impossible: Rogue Nation?
Rogue Nation follows Ethan Hunt as he chases a nerve gas shipment, discovers that a hidden group called the Syndicate is behind it, and then finds that the IMF has been dissolved while he was still in the field. The film was directed by Christopher McQuarrie from a script he wrote with Drew Pearce.
The Syndicate is a secret organization of rogue former spies, and Hunt (Tom Cruise) gets close enough to it to be captured and tortured. He escapes with the help of a woman named Ilsa Faust (Rebecca Ferguson), who is one of the most important new characters of the saga and returns in later films.
Back in Washington, CIA director Alan Hunley (Alec Baldwin) convinces a Senate committee to shut down the IMF and fold it into the CIA, which leaves Hunt a fugitive from his own government. Six months later, Hunt is still pursuing the Syndicate on his own, and he calls in his old friend Benji Dunn (Simon Pegg) for help.
If you are new to the saga, the film follows Mission: Impossible: Ghost Protocol in release order, and the Mission: Impossible movies in order guide shows how the two connect.

What Songs Are in Mission: Impossible: Rogue Nation?
Joe Kraemer composed the score for Mission: Impossible: Rogue Nation (2015), the fifth film in the Mission: Impossible saga. Kraemer is the only composer credited for the score, and the film features one named song alongside his music.
The featured piece is "Nessun dorma" by Giacomo Puccini. The aria from the opera Turandot plays during the Vienna opera house sequence, so the music heard on screen and the setting of the scene belong to the same world. Because the sequence takes place in an opera house, the aria sits exactly where an audience would expect to hear it, and that choice gives the scene a recognizable musical anchor. Anyone looking for the song list for this film will find just this one entry, and it is a piece of opera rather than a pop single or a rock track.

Rogue Nation Plot Explained: The Full StorySpoilers
The full plot of Rogue Nation runs through three big set pieces, the Vienna opera, the Casablanca vault and the chase through London, and each one moves Ethan Hunt a step closer to the Syndicate's leader.
After Ilsa Faust helps Hunt escape and Alan Hunley persuades the Senate to dissolve the IMF, Hunt becomes a wanted man. Six months on, he draws Benji into a plan to stop the Syndicate from assassinating the Austrian Chancellor at the Vienna opera. Hunt foils the shooting, but a car bomb kills the Chancellor anyway, and Hunley orders Hunt and Benji hunted down.
In Casablanca, Ilsa names the Syndicate's leader as Solomon Lane, a rogue British agent. The team steals a digital ledger from a heavily guarded underwater vault, but Ilsa passes it to her MI6 boss Atlee (Simon McBurney), who destroys it. Benji had secretly copied the data, and it turns out to be a locked file that needs the British Prime Minister's biometrics to open.
Lane's men kidnap Benji and force Hunt to open the file. So, disguised as Atlee, Hunt sedates the Prime Minister (Tom Hollander) and takes his biometrics. The file gives access to billions of pounds, and Hunt destroys it when he realizes Lane would use the money to fund the Syndicate.
Hunt then offers himself in exchange for Benji, who is wired to a bomb, and a chase through London follows. Ilsa kills Vinter (Jens Hultén), and Lane is trapped in a bulletproof glass cell and gassed. Hunley tells the Senate that his actions were part of a plan to expose the Syndicate, and the IMF is restored.
Rogue Nation Premiere, Release Dates and Where to Watch
Mission: Impossible: Rogue Nation had its world premiere on July 23, 2015 at the Wiener Staatsoper (Vienna State Opera) in Vienna, the same building the film uses for its assassination set piece.
The film opened in Australia on July 30, 2015 and in the United States and the United Kingdom on July 31, 2015. It was originally dated for December 25, 2015, and the studio moved it up to July 31 to avoid Star Wars: The Force Awakens. The film is rated PG-13 in the US, 12A in the UK and M in Australia.
As of November 3, 2026, according to JustWatch data on TMDB, Rogue Nation streams on Paramount Plus in the US (Premium, Essential, the Amazon channel and the Roku Premium channel), with free access through Kanopy and with ads on Pluto TV. It can also be rented or bought from Amazon Video, Apple TV, Google Play, YouTube and Fandango At Home. In the UK it streams on Disney Plus and Paramount Plus, and in Australia on Disney Plus, Paramount Plus, Foxtel Now and Stan. Netflix is not listed in any of the three countries. Rogue Nation Ending Explained: Who Wins and What ChangesSpoilers
The ending of Rogue Nation ends the Syndicate's threat and puts the IMF back in business: Solomon Lane is trapped in a bulletproof glass cell and captured, the group is exposed and broken up, and the Senate committee reinstates the agency it had just dissolved.
The trigger for that reversal is Alan Hunley. He tells the Senate that he used Ethan Hunt as part of a plan to expose the Syndicate, and the committee accepts it. Brandt then makes Hunley the new IMF Secretary, and Hunt and his team are free to work again.
In my opinion, the smartest decision in the whole film comes just before that, when Hunt destroys the locked file. Benji had secretly copied the data, Hunt had just taken the Prime Minister's biometrics to open it, and the file gives access to billions of pounds. Hunt realizes that Lane would use the money to fund the Syndicate, so he burns the one thing that could have made him powerful. It could be argued that this is the clearest statement of what Ethan Hunt is, a man who keeps choosing the people over the prize.
Hunley's confession is the part I am less sure about. Perhaps it is a little too convenient that the man who spent the film hunting Hunt turns out to have been playing a long game, and it resets the series to its usual shape, with a working IMF and a team ready for the next mission. That being said, the reset does its job. It reverses the dissolution Hunley pushed through the Senate earlier in the film, and it frees the story to move on.
The ending also sets up what follows. In Mission: Impossible: Fallout, Lane has been in custody for two years, and his remnant group, the Apostles, is the new threat, so Rogue Nation is the setup for a second chapter rather than a closed door. Hunt's offer of himself in exchange for Benji, and Ilsa's killing of Vinter, close out the London chase.
