Who Is Dek in Predator: Badlands?

Dek is the Yautja protagonist of Predator: Badlands (2025), directed by Dan Trachtenberg, and he is played by Dimitrius Schuster-Koloamatangi. He is a young Yautja, the runt of his clan, and both his clan and his father see him as weak. The film reached US theaters on November 7, 2025, and the cast list credits the role as "Dek / Father".

That credit has a second half. Reuben De Jong is separately credited as Father (Suit), so the father appears on the cast list as both a name and a suit performance, even though he is Dek's opponent on screen.

Is Dek a deformed Predator? No. Nothing in the film's setup marks him as deformed: he is small, underestimated and the weakest of his clan, so his standing is the problem, not his body. His father casts him out, and Dek crash lands on Genna, a deadly planet, hoping to earn his place by killing a creature no hunter has beaten, the Kalisk.

That premise flips the usual shape of the saga. In Predator (1987) the Yautja is the unseen threat, and in Prey (2022) the hunter is the villain. Here the Yautja is the character you follow. If you are after the creature itself rather than this one individual, the Yautja page is the better start.

Dek's Story Arc: From Outcast to Clan LeaderSpoilers

Dek begins the film believing that worth is proved by a trophy, and he ends it as the head of a clan built on company instead. His father sets the test: kill the Kalisk on Genna, a nearly unkillable apex creature, and earn a place among the Yautja. The first problem is that the planet punishes a lone runt, so the crash that strands him also throws him together with Thia, a badly damaged Weyland-Yutani synthetic who needs help. They agree to travel as partners across the wilds.

The code he was raised on starts to loosen on that trek. Dek befriends Bud, a young Kalisk, which means the prey he came for becomes a traveling companion. Why would a hunter do that? The film's answer is a slow change in what he values, with friendship and compassion gradually outweighing brute strength.

Meanwhile Weyland-Yutani closes in. Thia's "sister" synthetic, Tessa, is also on Genna and chases the group, since the company wants the Kalisk's regenerative abilities. Thia turns on her makers, the company's research on Genna is destroyed, and Dek defeats Tessa before heading home with his companions.

The homecoming is where the lesson is tested. His father refuses the kill Dek brings back, and the two fight. Dek wins, and Bud, now larger, kills the father. Dek, Thia and Bud then set up a clan of their own.

Dek's Allies and Enemies: Thia, Bud, Kwei and His Father

Dek's relationships are the real plot of Predator: Badlands, because each one tests the code he was raised on. The most important is Thia, played by Elle Fanning, who is credited as Thia / Tessa because she also plays the second synthetic. Thia starts as a damaged passenger on his hunt, turns against Weyland-Yutani, and ends the film as a member of his clan.

Bud, played by Ravi Narayan, is the young Kalisk who joins the group. The creature Dek came to kill becomes a companion, and when Bud grows larger he is the one who kills Dek's father. Tessa is the antagonist on the company side, pursuing the group for the Kalisk's regenerative abilities until Dek defeats her. Weyland-Yutani is the corporation behind both synthetics, and it is the reason the group is hunted across Genna.

Kwei has two cast credits: Michael Homick as Kwei (Suit) and Stefan Grube as Kwei (voice). The Duffer brothers, Matt and Ross, are also credited for a ship computer voice.

The father is the opposing force. He is the clan authority who sees Dek as weak, casts him out, and rejects the kill Dek brings back. The old clan is last seen preparing to attack, which makes it a standing threat rather than a closed chapter.

Does Dek Die? His Fate and the Mother RevealSpoilers

Dek does not die in Predator: Badlands. He beats his father on the Yautja home world, Bud finishes the father off, and Dek, Thia and Bud form their own clan, which is highly unusual for Yautja.

A short scene after the title card closes the film. Dek's old clan readies to attack him and his friends as a large ship appears on the horizon. When asked who is aboard, Dek says it is his mother. Nothing follows the credits, so the reveal is the last story beat the film gives him.

What comes next is open. No film after Badlands has been dated or officially announced, and as of February 2026 ComicBook.com reported that Trachtenberg was still working out next steps. TheWrap reported in November 2025 that Badlands ends with a sequel hook and that Disney and Trachtenberg reportedly see a possible new series, but it named no title or date. Any return for Dek or his mother is a rumor rather than a plan, and the new Predator movie page tracks it as it develops.

Dek's Best Moments, Ranked by Impact

In my opinion, Dek works because the film lets a hunter be wrong about what makes a hunter, and his best moments are the ones where that belief cracks. Perhaps the clearest is the Bud friendship. The Kalisk is the trophy Dek traveled to Genna to take, and watching him share a journey with one turns the mission upside down, in a way that Dutch's mud trap in Predator (1987) never needed to.

The crash landing and the first meeting with Thia come second. A runt on a hostile planet who must accept help from a broken synthetic is a strong start, and it sets the film apart from Prey (2022), where Naru is the underdog and the Yautja is the hazard.

The father fight is third, mostly for its reversal. It could be argued that the tidy win would have been Dek killing his father himself, yet it is Bud, now larger, who does it, which suits a hero whose strength is his company.

The last beat, Dek naming the ship on the horizon as his mother, is the one I would watch for next. For a viewer arriving from Predator: Killer of Killers, it is the clearest sign that this film wants to open a new line rather than close one.
