Yautja: The Predator Species, Types, Weapons and Home World
The Yautja are the alien hunters of the Predator films, a species that has appeared in nine films from Predator (1987) to Predator: Badlands (2025). Predator: Badlands calls its lead Dek a young Yautja and names the home world Yautja Prime, while the hunters in the earlier films are credited as the Predator.

What Are the Yautja in the Predator Films?
The Yautja are a species of alien hunters who travel to other worlds to stalk dangerous prey, and they are the creature at the center of the whole Predator saga. Across nine films they have turned up in a Central American jungle, a Los Angeles heat wave, an Antarctic pyramid, a Colorado town, an alien game preserve, a Comanche camp on the Great Plains and a home world of their own.
The films cover more than a thousand years of Earth history, from a Viking raid in the year 841 to Los Angeles in 1997, and the hunters change very little in that time. They still cloak, still read heat, and still take trophies. What changes is how the films treat them: as an unseen threat in Predator (1987), as a rival species in the crossover films, and as a lead character in Predator: Badlands.
If you are new to the series, think of these hunters the way you would think of a shark in a creature feature. The scare comes from a predator that follows rules you can slowly work out, and the film by film entries here collect those rules. For the order to watch them in, see Predator movies in order, and for the wider story start at the Predator movies hub.
Are Yautja and Predator the Same Thing?
Yes, Yautja and Predator name the same kind of hunter. The earlier films credit the creature as The Predator or Predator, and Predator: Badlands (2025) introduces Dek as "a young Yautja" and sets its ending on the home world, Yautja Prime.
There is one wrinkle for readers and searchers. "Predator" is also the title of the 1987 film, so we write "Predator (1987)" for the movie and "the Predator" or "a Predator" for one of the creatures. The creature has its own page at the Predator creature, and the human and alien roles are at Predator characters.
The credits show how fluid the naming is. Kevin Peter Hall is billed as The Predator in the first two films, Ian Whyte as Scar in AVP: Alien vs. Predator and as Predator in Aliens vs. Predator: Requiem, and Dane DiLiegro as Predator in Prey (2022). Different films, same species.
Are There Different Types of Predators?Spoilers
Yes, the films show several kinds of Yautja, though most are described by what they do rather than by a formal class. Predators (2010), directed by Nimród Antal, gives the clearest set, with a Classic Predator (Derek Mears), a Tracker Predator (Carey Jones), and a Berserker and a Falconer (both Brian Steele). The plot adds that these larger hunters are in a feud with a smaller clan, so size and clan matter as much as role.
Other films add their own variations. The Predator (2018), directed by Shane Black, introduces a second, much larger Predator that kills the first one. Predator: Killer of Killers (2025) features a Predator warlord called the Grendel King, who runs a desert arena for captured fighters. In AVP: Alien vs. Predator, Scar is the last surviving Predator of a group on the ice.
Then there is Dek in Badlands, a runt his father treats as weak, and the only type on the list defined by rank rather than role.
What Weapons and Tools Do the Yautja Use?Spoilers
The Yautja carry a mix of cloaking, vision and thrown or worn weapons, and the films show most of them in use. Predator (1987) establishes the basics: the hunter turns nearly invisible, sees heat, keeps the skulls of its victims, and removes its mask and weapons for the final hand to hand fight. When it is dying, it sets off a self destruct device.
Predator 2 adds a spear tip that Archuleta finds at a crime scene and a thrown disc that kills Keyes and, in the end, the Predator itself. Its scanners also read that Cantrell is pregnant. AVP: Alien vs. Predator gives Scar a wrist bomb that destroys a pyramid, and he crafts gear for Alexa from Alien remains. Aliens vs. Predator: Requiem gives the veteran Predator a plasma pistol, which Colonel Stevens later hands to Ms. Yutani. Predator: Killer of Killers shows a sonic weapon in the opening ambush and explosive collars on captives.
One more gadget closes a film. The Predator (2018) ends on a Predator Killer exo-suit, built to fight Predators, that Quinn agrees to pilot.
Predator (1987): The Jungle HunterSpoilers
Predator (1987), directed by John McTiernan, introduces the hunters as an unseen presence in the Central American jungle that picks off Dutch Schaefer's team one at a time. Arnold Schwarzenegger plays Dutch, Kevin Peter Hall is billed as The Predator, and Peter Cullen is an uncredited voice for the creature.
Anna explains that the jungle people know of a creature that comes in the hot season to hunt. Dutch hides his body heat under mud and sets traps, and he wounds the creature so that its cloaking fails. Then he is knocked into a river and loses his advantage. The creature removes its mask and weapons and fights him hand to hand until a heavy log trap lands on it. Dying, it triggers a self destruct device, and Dutch gets clear.
Producer John Davis told Variety that the creature needed to be taller. The film leaves the idea of other hunters visiting Earth open, and everything after it builds on that. See Predator 1987 for the full page.
Predator 2 (1990): The City HunterSpoilers
Predator 2 (1990), directed by Stephen Hopkins, drops a lone hunter into a sweltering Los Angeles in 1997, a city already torn by Colombian and Jamaican gang violence. Danny Glover plays Lieutenant Mike Harrigan, and Kevin Peter Hall returns inside the suit.
The sequel fills in the hunter's habits. Its scanners read Leona Cantrell as pregnant and it lets her live, a choice that tells you the creature picks its targets. It takes King Willie's head, and it kills Jerry Lambert on a subway train. A federal team under Peter Keyes wants it alive, and the slaughterhouse trap goes badly for them.
Harrigan ends it on a rooftop and in a buried ship, where the creature's own disc finishes the job. Then cloaked hunters carry off the body, and their leader hands Harrigan an antique flintlock pistol engraved Raphael Adolini 1715. That engraving is the detail that lingers, because it implies a hunter had visited Earth three centuries earlier. Read more at Predator 2 and Harrigan in Predator 2.
AVP: Alien vs. Predator (2004): Coming of Age on the IceSpoilers
AVP: Alien vs. Predator (2004), directed by Paul W. S. Anderson, shows the hunters as the organizers of a hunt that has run in a pyramid under Bouvet Island for ages. Predators arrive first, kill the people at the surface and burn a path through the ice.
Sebastian decodes carvings that show the pyramid is a coming of age hunt, with humans serving as hosts for the prey. Scar, the last surviving Predator, teams up with Alexa Woods after she decides a loose Alien would threaten the world. He triggers his wrist bomb and destroys the pyramid, and the pair drop the Queen over a cliff before she mortally wounds him.
Then the elder of the other Predators marks Alexa's face and gives her one of their spears, an honor for a human. On the Predator ship, a hybrid bursts from Scar's chest. The film is a crossover, so it also gives the Xenomorph its place in the species' story. Read alien vs predator 2004, Alexa Woods in AVP and the alien vs predator crossover hub.
Aliens vs. Predator: Requiem (2007): The CleanerSpoilers
Aliens vs. Predator: Requiem (2007), directed by Colin Strause and Greg Strause, sends a veteran Predator to Earth as a cleaner after a hybrid born from a Predator and an Alien takes over its ship. The ship crashes near Gunnison, Colorado, and the hybrid and facehuggers escape into the woods and sewers.
The veteran destroys the wreck, removes evidence of the early victims, and tracks the creatures to a power plant, where his weapon fire cuts power to the town. He uses Dallas as bait at one point, loses much of his gear in a fight in the hive, and in the end fatally wounds the hybrid while it fatally wounds him. The military drops a tactical nuclear bomb on the town.
The last beat concerns alien technology rather than the hunter. Colonel Stevens hands the Predator's plasma pistol to Ms. Yutani, which hints that the company will study it. Details are at avp requiem.
Predators (2010): The Game PreserveSpoilers
Predators (2010), directed by Nimród Antal, shows the hunters running their sport on a planet that works as a game preserve, with human killers dropped in as prey. Royce, played by Adrien Brody, wakes up falling through the sky and finds seven other strangers, and they see planets in the sky and realize they are not on Earth.
The film is where the hunters split into named types. Tracker, Berserker and Falconer kill Mombasa, and the group finds a camp holding a captive Predator. Noland explains that the larger Predators are in a feud with a smaller clan. Royce offers to free the captive in exchange for passage home, but Berserker kills it and destroys its ship as it lifts off.
Hanzo kills Falconer in a sword duel, and Royce and Isabelle eventually kill Berserker together. Afterward they see more parachutes falling, which means new victims are being dropped onto the planet. The idea of a hunting world is left open. See predators 2010 and Royce in Predators.
The Predator (2018): A Bigger HunterSpoilers
The Predator (2018), directed by Shane Black, brings a Predator ship crashing to Earth and adds a larger Predator to the species. Army sniper Quinn McKenna mails some of the alien's armor home, and his son Rory, wearing it, draws the attention of more Predators.
The captured Predator escapes a government lab, and then a second, much larger Predator arrives, kills the first and takes Rory to its ship. Nebraska Williams sacrifices himself to bring the ship down, and Nettles dies in the crash. Quinn and Casey Brackett kill the big Predator.
The last scene shows a lab opening cargo from the wreck and finding a Predator Killer exo-suit that Quinn agrees to pilot. Brian A. Prince is credited as the Predator. Full details are at the predator 2018, with Quinn McKenna as the human lead.
Prey (2022): The Hunter in 1719Spoilers
Prey (2022), directed by Dan Trachtenberg, sets a lone hunter on the Great Plains in 1719, where it stalks Naru, a young Comanche healer who wants to be a hunter. Amber Midthunder plays Naru, and Dane DiLiegro, at 6 ft 9 according to Den of Geek, plays the Predator.
The hunter cloaks itself and uses advanced weapons, and it slaughters most of a group of French fur trappers. Naru lures it into a bog and turns its own mask and weapon against it. She takes its head back to her people and is named a war chief.
Over the end credits, ledger style artwork shows Predator ships descending toward the tribe, which hints at future visits. Prey (2022) streamed on Hulu on August 5, 2022, according to TheWrap. For this film's page, see prey predator and Naru in Prey.
Predator: Killer of Killers (2025): Three Eras, One ArenaSpoilers
Predator: Killer of Killers (2025), an animated film directed by Dan Trachtenberg, shows the hunters stalking across three eras and then collecting the survivors. In the year 841 Ursa and her son Anders destroy a rival clan and are ambushed by a Predator with a sonic weapon. In 1609 Japan the brothers Kenji and Kiyoshi fight a Predator together. In 1942 mechanic John Torres faces a Predator pilot.
A Predator ship abducts Torres, and Ursa, Kenji and Torres wake in a cell with explosive collars. They are forced to fight for the Grendel King in a desert arena, then join forces and turn on him. Ursa sacrifices herself so the other two can get away, and she is placed back in stasis among other captured warriors, including Naru from Prey (2022).
An extended ending added on July 25, 2025 also shows Dutch Schaefer and Mike Harrigan among the frozen captives. It is the strongest hint that the species has been collecting great hunters for a long time. See predator killer of killers and dutch predator.
Predator: Badlands (2025): A Yautja LeadSpoilers
Predator: Badlands (2025), directed by Dan Trachtenberg, puts a hunter at the center of the story for the first time. Dimitrius Schuster-Koloamatangi plays Dek, a runt whose father casts him out. Dek crash lands on Genna, a deadly planet, to prove himself against the Kalisk, a creature no hunter has beaten.
His allies are unlikely ones: Thia, a damaged synthetic built by Weyland-Yutani, and Bud, a young Kalisk. Thia's "sister" synthetic Tessa chases the group because the company wants the Kalisk's regenerative abilities. Along the road Dek starts to value friendship and compassion over brute strength, which cuts against the strict code he was raised on.
The finale returns him to Yautja Prime, where his father rejects the kill he carries home. Dek wins the fight, and Bud, now much larger, kills the father. The three form a clan of their own, something unusual for this species. Read predator badlands and Dek in Badlands.
What Is the Yautja Planet Called?Spoilers
The Yautja home world is called Yautja Prime, and Predator: Badlands (2025) is the film that takes you there. Dek returns to it at the end of his story, and his father's rejection of his kill and the fight that follows both happen on that world.
The other places in the series are hunting grounds rather than homes. Genna, in Badlands, is a deadly planet Dek is sent to as a test. The planet in Predators (2010) is a game preserve, with planets visible in the sky. Killer of Killers sets its final fight in a desert arena. Other hunts happen on Earth, from the jungle of the first film to the pyramid under Bouvet Island in AVP: Alien vs. Predator.
So the geography runs in three tiers: a home world with a strict clan code, remote worlds used as proving grounds, and Earth as a recurring hunting ground. If you want the order these appear in on screen, see the Predator timeline.
Is There a Female Yautja? How Do Yautja Have Babies?Spoilers
Predator: Badlands (2025) is the only film that points to a female Yautja, through Dek's mother, and no film shows how Yautja have babies. After the title card a ship appears on the horizon and Dek says it carries his mother, which sets up a possible follow up built around her arrival.
The young are covered mostly through Dek, a runt whose clan sees him as weak and sends him to Genna to prove himself. None of the nine films shows how a Yautja is born or raised.
Predator 2 touches on reproduction from the human side. The Predator spares Leona Cantrell after its scanners show she is pregnant, which suggests the hunter reads that as a reason not to kill.
Has a Yautja Ever Mated With a Human?Spoilers
No film in the series shows a Yautja mating with a human. The Predator and human link that does exist is the Predator 2 moment where a pregnant Leona Cantrell is spared, and nothing more happens between them.
The hybrids come from the Xenomorph side. In AVP: Alien vs. Predator, a new creature bursts from the chest of the fallen Scar on the Predator ship, a hybrid of Alien and Predator. In Aliens vs. Predator: Requiem, the hybrid born from a Predator and an Alien hatches and kills the crew of a Predator ship, then crashes near Gunnison, Colorado, and spreads through the town.
So the hybrid story is about Alien embryos and Predator hosts, not about humans. For the crossover films in full, see the alien vs predator pages.
Are the Yautja Friendly?Spoilers
Mostly no, though a few hunters in the films show respect or honor toward humans. The default behavior is hostile: the hunters in the first two films kill nearly everyone they meet, the Grendel King in Killer of Killers forces captives to fight in an arena, and the hunters in Predators (2010) stage a hunt on a game preserve.
There are exceptions. At the end of Predator 2, the leader of the cloaked Predators gives Harrigan an antique flintlock pistol as a reward. In AVP: Alien vs. Predator, the elder marks Alexa's face and gives her a spear. In Predator: Badlands, Dek forms a partnership with Thia and Bud and starts his own clan.
The pattern is respect for a worthy kill rather than kindness. A hunter that honors an opponent is still a hunter, and none of the films treats these aliens as rescuers by default.
What Does a Yautja Eat? How Did They Become So Advanced? Who Enslaved Them?Spoilers
The films do not say what a Yautja eats, how the species became so advanced, or whether anyone enslaved it. They show what it collects: skulls in Predator (1987) and a head from King Willie in Predator 2. In Killer of Killers, captured warriors are held in cryogenic storage on the Predator ship.
No film gives a history of Yautja technology. AVP: Alien vs. Predator shows that the Predators have used the pyramid under Bouvet Island for ages as a coming of age hunt, so the species has been visiting Earth for a very long time. Prey (2022) and Killer of Killers (2025) put hunters on Earth in 1719 and 841.
No film in the series shows another race enslaving the Yautja. The closest corporate threat is Weyland-Yutani in Badlands, which wants the Kalisk's regenerative abilities and does not control the Yautja.
Yautja Names and Language: What Do the Films Show?Spoilers
The films give individual Yautja few formal names, and most are titles or descriptions. Scar is the last surviving Predator in AVP: Alien vs. Predator. Tracker, Berserker and Falconer are the larger hunters in Predators (2010). The Grendel King leads the arena in Killer of Killers. Dek is the lead of Badlands.
Spoken Yautja is largely a matter of voice work. Peter Cullen is an uncredited voice of the Predator in Predator (1987), and Britton Watkins voices the Warlord Predator in Killer of Killers.
For searches on Yautja names and the Yautja language, the films name a handful of hunters and let the sounds carry the rest. The voices and suit performers are listed at Predator cast.
The Yautja Hunt Rules ExplainedSpoilers
In my opinion, the hunters' code is the most consistent idea in the whole series, and it can be read straight from what they do on screen. They take trophies, they sometimes spare prey that cannot fight back, and they respect an opponent who beats them.
The evidence runs through the films. In Predator (1987) the hunter drops its mask to fight Dutch hand to hand. In Predator 2 the Predator spares Cantrell once it sees she is pregnant, and the leader of the cloaked group gives Harrigan a pistol. In AVP: Alien vs. Predator the elder marks Alexa and gives her a spear. In Prey (2022), Naru earns the status of war chief by killing the hunter. It could be argued that these are all versions of one rule: a hunter who proves worthy is treated as worthy.
The rule also has a darker side. Predators (2010) sets prey loose on a game preserve, Killer of Killers holds captured warriors in cryogenic storage on the Predator ship, and Dek's father in Badlands rejects the kill Dek brings back. That being said, Badlands is where the code starts to bend, since Dek chooses a clan built on friendship. If you want to see the species at its sharpest, watch Predator (1987), and for the most unusual version of the hunter, watch Badlands.

FAQs
Are Yautja and predator the same?
Yes. The earlier films credit the creature as The Predator or Predator, and Predator: Badlands (2025) calls Dek a young Yautja and names the home world Yautja Prime. Predator (1987) is also the title of the first film, so the page writes "Predator (1987)" for the movie.
Are the Yautja friendly?
Mostly not. The hunters in Predator (1987), Predator 2 and Predators (2010) kill almost everyone they meet. A few show respect for a worthy opponent, such as the leader who gives Harrigan a pistol in Predator 2 and the elder who marks Alexa in AVP: Alien vs. Predator, and Dek in Predator: Badlands partners with Thia and Bud.
Has a Yautja ever mated with a human?
No film in the series shows it. The hybrids in AVP: Alien vs. Predator and Aliens vs. Predator: Requiem come from Alien embryos and Predator hosts. The nearest human link is in Predator 2, where the Predator spares a pregnant Leona Cantrell after its scanners read her condition.
Are there different types of Predators?
Yes. Predators (2010) shows a Classic Predator, a Tracker, a Berserker and a Falconer. The Predator (2018) adds a much larger Predator, Predator: Killer of Killers features a Predator warlord called the Grendel King, and Predator: Badlands follows Dek, a runt of his clan.
What does a Yautja eat?
The films do not say what a Yautja eats. They show what the hunters collect, which is skulls in Predator (1987) and a head from King Willie in Predator 2, plus captured warriors held in stasis in Predator: Killer of Killers.
How did the Yautja become so advanced?
No film explains it. AVP: Alien vs. Predator shows that the Predators have used a pyramid under Bouvet Island for ages as a coming of age hunt. Prey (2022) and Predator: Killer of Killers (2025) put hunters on Earth in 1719 and 841, so the technology is long established.
