Who Is Adonis Creed?
Adonis Creed is the son of heavyweight champion Apollo Creed and the lead fighter of the three Creed films, played in every one by Michael B. Jordan. He is introduced in Creed (2015), directed by Ryan Coogler, as Adonis Johnson, a boy in a juvenile facility in Los Angeles who is taken in by Mary Anne Creed, Apollo's widow. She tells him that Apollo was his father, the result of an affair, and that fact shapes everything he does afterward. As an adult he has a steady finance style job, yet he keeps fighting on the side, and the films follow what happens when he stops hiding from the Creed name.
The credits use several names for him, which can confuse a first time viewer. Adonis Johnson is the name he carries before he takes his father's surname, and the credits also list a Young Adonis. Adonis Creed (15) is the teenager in the 2002 opening of Creed III, played by Thaddeus J. Mixson, and the adult is Adonis Creed throughout. Friends and family call him Donnie. So, if you are searching for who played Adonis Creed as a teenager, that is Mixson in Creed III, while Jordan plays him from adulthood onward.
Is Adonis Creed a heavyweight? Yes. He wins the world heavyweight title in Creed II and fights at that weight against Viktor Drago and Dame Anderson. How old is he? The films give no single birth year. They show him as a boy in 1998, a 15 year old in 2002, and a grown champion, husband and father by the time of Creed II and Creed III.
Was he based on a real person? In the films he is a fictional character, the invented son of the equally fictional Apollo Creed from the Rocky saga. His story sits beside the one told in rocky movies, and you can find his father on the apollo creed page.

Adonis Creed's Story Arc Across Three FilmsSpoilers
Adonis Creed's arc runs from an unknown amateur to a champion who has to decide what his father's name means to him. It covers three films, each built around one big opponent: Ricky Conlan, Viktor Drago and Dame Anderson.
Creed (2015). After a win in Tijuana, Adonis quits his job and tries to turn professional. A Los Angeles gym will not take him, and he loses a sparring session to a heavyweight named Danny Wheeler. So he moves to Philadelphia and asks Rocky Balboa to train him. He fights under the name Hollywood and wins a local bout, but the press then learns that he is Apollo's son. Champion Ricky Conlan, who faces prison time and needs one last big payday, offers him a title fight if he uses the Creed name. Rocky collapses and learns he has lymphoma, and Adonis refuses to fight unless Rocky starts chemotherapy. The bout takes place at Goodison Park in Liverpool, where Adonis knocks Conlan down and lasts all twelve rounds but loses on a split decision. You can read how creed 2015 handles the fight in its own entry.
Creed II (2018). Adonis wins the heavyweight title and proposes to Bianca. Ivan Drago, who killed Apollo in the ring, resurfaces in Ukraine with his son Viktor, and promoter Buddy Marcelle sets up a title fight. Rocky refuses to work Adonis's corner, so Adonis trains with Tony "Little Duke" Evers. He takes the fight underprepared, is badly beaten, and keeps the belt only because Viktor is disqualified for an illegal blow. After a slump, his mother Mary Anne persuades Rocky to help, and the pair train in the desert to absorb punishment and fight from close range. In the Moscow rematch Adonis knocks Viktor down twice in round ten, and Ivan throws in the towel. The full story is in creed 2.
Creed III (2023). The film opens in 2002 with Donnie and his friend Dame, then jumps ahead to a retired champion who runs the Delphi Boxing Academy and manages a fighter named Chavez. Dame returns from prison and asks for a title shot. When Chavez's opponent Viktor Drago is attacked, Donnie puts Dame in as the replacement, and Dame wins the heavyweight title with dirty tactics. Donnie later learns that Dame manipulated him into the fight, and he comes out of retirement. The two meet at Dodger Stadium in the Battle of Los Angeles. Creed 3 was directed by Michael B. Jordan himself.
Adonis Creed's Family and Key Relationships
Adonis Creed's most important relationships are with Rocky Balboa, his mother Mary Anne, his wife Bianca and his daughter Amara. Each one pulls him in a different direction, and that tension drives most of his decisions.
Rocky Balboa. Rocky is the trainer and, in practice, the father figure. He is reluctant at first in Creed (2015) but takes Adonis on at a local gym, and the bond becomes two way when Adonis insists Rocky start cancer treatment. In Creed II Rocky refuses to train him because he fears history will repeat itself, then relents. Rocky does not appear in Creed III, where Sylvester Stallone is a producer only. See rocky balboa for the other side of that partnership.
Mary Anne Creed. Played by Phylicia Rashād, she is Apollo's widow and the woman who takes Adonis out of the juvenile facility. In Creed III, where she is credited as Mary-Anne Creed, she is his adoptive mother, and her death after another stroke is one of the film's turning points.
Bianca and Amara. Bianca, played by Tessa Thompson, is a singer songwriter who is slowly losing her hearing, and she is the neighbor he falls for in Philadelphia. He proposes in Creed II, and she is credited as Bianca Creed by Creed III. Their daughter Amara is born deaf in Creed II, and Rocky becomes her godfather. In Creed III she is hard of hearing and the family uses American Sign Language. More on her in bianca creed. The films show Adonis with a daughter, Amara, so searches for an Adonis Creed son usually mean Adonis himself, the son of Apollo.
Apollo Creed. Adonis never shares a scene with his father, who dies in the ring in Rocky IV against Ivan Drago. He visits Apollo's grave with baby Amara at the end of Creed II. See apollo creed.
The Dragos. Ivan and Viktor Drago are his opponents in Creed II, where Adonis beats Viktor in the Moscow rematch. In Creed III, Donnie trains with Duke and a recovered Drago before he faces Dame. See ivan drago and viktor drago.
Dame Anderson. Dame is the childhood friend whose arrest in 2002 Donnie walked away from, and the guilt of it drives the third film.
What Happens to Adonis Creed?Spoilers
Adonis Creed is alive at the end of Creed III and has won back the heavyweight title. In the last round at Dodger Stadium he is knocked down, beats the count and knocks Dame Anderson out. The two former friends then make peace, and each accepts a share of the blame for what happened years earlier.
The film closes on a quiet image: Donnie shadowboxing with Amara in the empty stadium ring. It points to her as the next generation of the family's story, though the films do not say whether she will box.
Why did Adonis Creed retire so early? Creed III presents him as a champion who has already stepped away and now puts his family and the Delphi Boxing Academy first. He returns after Dame humiliates him publicly and Bianca pushes him to face the past. The retirement, in other words, is a choice, which makes it different from his mentor's. Rocky was forced out in Rocky V by a brain condition.
What comes next? No Creed 4 has an official date or studio announcement as of November 2026. Michael B. Jordan has said he wants to continue, but a release in 2027 or 2028 is only speculation, and the project is described as in development. Follow the latest on the creed 4 page.
Best Adonis Creed Moments
In my opinion, the best Adonis Creed moments are the ones where the fight is also a family argument. Here are the four I would pick.
The Conlan fight at Goodison Park. Adonis knocks the champion down in his first title shot, then survives all twelve rounds and still loses on a split decision. It could be argued that the loss is the point, because it proves he belongs in the ring without handing him a belt too early. The crowd was real, too: Tony Bellew, who plays Conlan, has described shooting the crowd scenes at Goodison Park, and that gives the set piece a weight a green screen would not.
The Moscow rematch. After the disqualification win in the first Drago fight, Adonis has nothing left to hide behind. The desert training is all about taking punishment and working at close range, and the payoff comes in round ten, when he drops Viktor twice and Ivan throws in the towel. For me, the cleverest beat is that Adonis wins at the moment the other father chooses to protect his son.
The Dodger Stadium finish. Donnie goes down in the final round with the past clouding his mind, beats the count and knocks out Dame. That being said, the fight matters less than the beach scene before it and the reconciliation after. Jordan directed the film, so the pacing is his call, and I think he gets the emotional order right.
The steps with Rocky. At the end of Creed (2015), a frail Rocky climbs the Philadelphia Museum of Art steps beside Adonis. Those steps are already where the statue of Rocky is unveiled in rocky 3, so the scene hands that setting to a new fighter, and the film earns it by making the trainer's recovery as important as the loss. If you want to see how the pair compare with the older films, start with the rocky movies in order guide.
