Rocky Characters: Who Is Who in the Rocky and Creed Films

The Rocky characters are the Philadelphia fighter Rocky Balboa, the family and corner team around him, the champions and challengers who fight him, and the Creed family that carries the saga forward after Rocky Balboa (2006). Nine films feed that cast, six Rocky films and three Creed films, all collected on the Rocky movies hub. Deaths and fight results are spoiled throughout, so if you have not seen the films yet, start with the Rocky movies in order guide.

The main characters in Rocky are Rocky Balboa (Sylvester Stallone), Adrian (Talia Shire), Paulie (Burt Young), Apollo Creed (Carl Weathers) and Mickey Goldmill (Burgess Meredith). In Rocky (1976), directed by John G. Avildsen, Rocky is a Philadelphia club boxer who also collects debts for a loan shark, and heavyweight champion Apollo picks him for a showpiece title bout because of the Italian Stallion nickname. Stallone then directed Rocky 2 (1979), Rocky 3 (1982), Rocky 4 (1985) and Rocky Balboa 2006, while Avildsen returned for Rocky 5 (1990). Stallone also plays Rocky in the Creed films as Adonis's trainer, but he is a producer only on Creed III. Full billing for every film sits on the Rocky cast page.

The Rocky 1 characters are Rocky, Adrianna 'Adrian' Pennino, her brother Paulie Pennino, Apollo Creed, Mickey Goldmill and the promoter George 'Miles' Jergens (Thayer David). Adrian is a shy pet shop worker whom Paulie sets up with Rocky, and Jergens is the man who sets a $150,000 purse for the bout. Mickey is the old gym owner who once dismissed Rocky and later offers to coach him. Rocky trains in makeshift ways, including punching slabs of beef, and the film ends with him lasting all fifteen rounds against Apollo. Apollo wins a split decision, but Rocky and Adrian only have eyes for each other. Adrian becomes Adrianna 'Adrian' Balboa from Rocky 2 onward. For the full story, see Rocky 1976.

Rocky's best friend is Paulie Pennino, played by Burt Young in all six Rocky films. Paulie arranges the first date between Rocky and his sister Adrian, wants a place in the corner team before the Apollo fight, and grows jealous. Rocky smooths it over by promoting Paulie's employer. By Rocky Balboa (2006) Paulie is Rocky's brother in law and his companion on the walk through the places that remind him of Adrian. It could be argued that Apollo Creed becomes the other friend of Rocky's life, because the sparring match at the end of Rocky III turns a rivalry into a friendship. Adrian, played by Talia Shire, dies before the events of Rocky Balboa (2006), and the film is built around Rocky mourning her. Across the earlier films her arc moves from the shy pet shop worker of Rocky (1976) to Rocky's wife. In Rocky II she goes into a coma after a premature birth and, on waking, tells him to go win the rematch. In Rocky IV she doubts his plan to fight Ivan Drago but travels to Moscow to join him, and in Rocky V the family loses its home when the accountant steals Rocky's money. In Rocky Balboa he runs a restaurant named after her, visits her grave, and ends the film there telling her they did it. Her Adrian page has the full arc.

The trainers are Mickey Goldmill, Tony 'Duke' Evers and, for a stretch, Apollo Creed himself. Mickey (Burgess Meredith) coaches Rocky through the first two films, and in Rocky III he admits that he hand picked Rocky's earlier opponents, then suffers a heart attack backstage after Clubber Lang shoves him. He dies soon after Lang knocks Rocky out in the second round, and Rocky reopens Mighty Mick's Gym in Rocky V. Duke (Tony Burton) appears from Rocky II through Rocky Balboa, teaches footwork and speed alongside Apollo at the Los Angeles gym in Rocky III, and goes with Rocky to the Siberian cabin in Rocky IV. Wood Harris then plays Tony 'Little Duke' Evers in Creed II and Creed III, taking Adonis into the desert in Creed II to learn to absorb punishment and fight from close range. In my opinion, the corner passes in release order from Mickey's old school instincts to Apollo and Duke's technique, and finally to Rocky himself, who becomes the veteran in the corner. The fighters in the saga are the opponents each hero faces in the ring, and the results run like this:

• Apollo Creed (Carl Weathers): beats Rocky by split decision in Rocky (1976), then loses the Rocky II rematch when Rocky gets up at the count of nine and Apollo stays down in round fifteen.
• Clubber Lang (Mr. T): knocks out Rocky in round two of Rocky III, then is knocked out by Rocky in round three of the Madison Square Garden rematch. See Clubber Lang.
• Ivan Drago (Dolph Lundgren): kills Apollo in a Las Vegas exhibition in Rocky IV, then loses to Rocky by knockout in the last round in Moscow. See Ivan Drago.
• Tommy Gunn (Tommy Morrison): Rocky's protege in Rocky V, who turns on him and loses a street fight.
• Mason 'The Line' Dixon (Antonio Tarver): beats Rocky by split decision after ten rounds in Rocky Balboa.
• 'Pretty' Ricky Conlan (Tony Bellew): beats Adonis by split decision after twelve rounds at Goodison Park in Creed, after Adonis knocks him down.
• Viktor Drago (Florian Munteanu): is disqualified for an illegal blow in the first fight with Adonis in Creed II, then loses the Moscow rematch when Ivan throws in the towel. See Viktor Drago.
• Damian 'Dame' Anderson (Jonathan Majors): wins the title in Creed III, then is knocked out by Adonis in the final round at Dodger Stadium.

There is no single villain across the saga, because Apollo Creed starts as the rival and ends as a friend, but the nearest to a villain in each film are Mr. T as Clubber Lang, Dolph Lundgren as Ivan Drago and Richard Gant as promoter George Washington Duke. Lang is the hungry contender who accuses Rocky of ducking real challengers in Rocky III. Drago is the Soviet fighter whose blow kills Apollo in Rocky IV, and Stallone has said Lundgren's punch during filming sent him to the hospital for four days. In Rocky V, Duke lures Tommy Gunn away from Rocky, and Tommy Morrison plays Gunn. Brigitte Nielsen plays Ludmilla Vobet Drago, Ivan's wife in Rocky IV, who returns as Ludmilla Drago in Creed II and walks out of her son Viktor's Moscow rematch.

The deaths that move the saga are Mickey Goldmill in Rocky III, Apollo Creed in Rocky IV and Adrian before Rocky Balboa. Mickey dies after the heart attack that follows Lang's backstage shove, and Apollo dies in the ring against Drago after Rocky works his corner in the exhibition. Adrian's death sits behind the whole of Rocky Balboa, as Rocky carries her memory through the restaurant and the grave. Mary Anne Creed (Phylicia Rashād) dies after another stroke in Creed III. Rocky himself survives every film, although director John G. Avildsen has said Rocky was meant to die at the end of Rocky V and that the studio changed the ending about two weeks into filming.

The Creed characters are Adonis Creed (Michael B. Jordan), Bianca (Tessa Thompson), Mary Anne Creed and the Drago family, with Rocky and Little Duke in his corner. Credited as Adonis Johnson in Creed (2015), directed by Ryan Coogler, Adonis is Apollo's son from an affair, taken in by Apollo's widow Mary Anne after a stay in a juvenile facility in Los Angeles. He moves to Philadelphia and asks Rocky to train him. Bianca is a neighbor and singer songwriter who is slowly losing her hearing, and she later becomes Adonis's partner and the mother of their daughter Amara (Mila Davis-Kent in Creed III). In Creed II (2018), directed by Steven Caple Jr., Rocky reconciles with his son Robert (Milo Ventimiglia) and meets his grandson Logan. Jordan himself directs Creed III (2023).
