Rocky Cast: Actors, Directors and Recasts Across Every Film

The Rocky cast is built around Sylvester Stallone as Rocky Balboa, with a small ensemble of returning faces around him before the Creed films hand the lead to Michael B. Jordan. The table gives the principal actor for each major character, and the paragraphs after it fill in who was billed where.

Stallone is billed first in all six Rocky films and second in Creed (2015) and Creed II, where Jordan takes the top spot. In rocky 1976, directed by John G. Avildsen, Talia Shire and Burt Young are billed second and third, with Carl Weathers fourth as Apollo Creed and Burgess Meredith fifth as the gym owner Mickey Goldmill. That group carries the saga's first three films almost unchanged, and rocky 2 adds Tony Burton as Duke, the trainer who stays in the corner for the rest of the Rocky run.

The opponents are cast as sharply as the heroes. Mr. T plays Clubber Lang in rocky 3, and Hulk Hogan appears as the wrestler Thunderlips. Dolph Lundgren is billed second as Ivan Drago in rocky 4, alongside Brigitte Nielsen as his wife Ludmilla. Stallone has said Lundgren's punch during the shoot put him in the hospital for four days. Rocky V (1990) casts Tommy Morrison as the young fighter Tommy Gunn, and rocky balboa 2006 brings in Antonio Tarver as the champion Mason Dixon, Geraldine Hughes as Marie and Mike Tyson as himself.

The Creed films keep that mix of actors and working fighters. Creed 2015 pairs Jordan with Tessa Thompson as Bianca and Phylicia Rashād as Mary Anne Creed, and it fills the ring with Andre Ward as Danny "Stuntman" Wheeler and Tony Bellew as "Pretty" Ricky Conlan. Bellew has told Sky Sports that the film used three professional boxers in its cast. Creed 2 brings Lundgren and Nielsen back and introduces Florian Munteanu as Viktor Drago, and creed 3 adds Jonathan Majors as Dame Anderson and Mila Davis-Kent as Adonis and Bianca's daughter Amara, with Munteanu back as Viktor.

Five directors share the nine films: John G. Avildsen directed Rocky (1976) and Rocky V (1990), Sylvester Stallone directed Rocky II, Rocky III, Rocky IV and Rocky Balboa (2006), and each Creed film has its own director. Ryan Coogler made Creed (2015), Steven Caple Jr. made Creed II (2018), and Michael B. Jordan made Creed III (2023).

The handoff between Avildsen and Stallone is the franchise's longest creative stretch. Stallone took the chair for rocky 2 in 1979 and kept it through rocky 4 in 1985, so three of the first five films were directed by the man in front of the camera. Avildsen came back for rocky 5, a film produced by Irwin Winkler and Robert Chartoff. Stallone then directed rocky balboa 2006 himself.

The Creed trilogy rotates its directors. Variety reported in 2017 that Caple was hired for Creed II, with Coogler moving to an executive producer role. For Creed III, Jordan directed while also starring as Adonis Creed, and Stallone is not in that film's cast, having stepped back to a producer's role.

Behind the camera, the music changes hands as well. Bill Conti scored Rocky (1976), Rocky II, Rocky III, Rocky V and Rocky Balboa (2006), Vince DiCola scored Rocky IV, Ludwig Göransson scored Creed (2015) and Creed II, and Joseph Shirley scored Creed III. The full list of songs and albums sits on the rocky soundtrack page.

The next film is still at the talking stage. Producer Irwin Winkler said at the Contenders Film: Los Angeles event in November 2023 that Creed 4 is being planned and that Jordan will direct, as reported by TheWrap. That was a producer's statement rather than a studio announcement, and no greenlight, start date or release date has been reported. Status updates live on the creed 4 page.

Stallone, Burt Young and Tony Burton returned most often, while Rocky's son is credited to three different actors. Robert "Rocky" Balboa Jr. is played by Ina Fried in Rocky III, Sage Stallone in Rocky V and Milo Ventimiglia in Rocky Balboa (2006).

The answer to who played Rocky's son in Rocky Balboa (2006) is Milo Ventimiglia, who plays the grown son living in his father's shadow. Ventimiglia also appears as Robert Balboa in Creed II, so that version of the character has stayed with him since 2006. Sage Stallone's turn in Rocky V is the one with a family link, since he shares a surname with the lead.

In my opinion, the most remarkable return is Burt Young as Paulie Pennino, who appears from Rocky (1976) through Rocky Balboa (2006), a span of thirty years. Carl Weathers is just as dependable for the first four films as Apollo Creed, and Burgess Meredith's Mickey Goldmill appears in Rocky (1976), II, III and V. Talia Shire's Adrian runs from the first film to Rocky V, and by Rocky Balboa (2006) the character is a late wife whom Rocky still visits. It could be argued that Tony Burton is the quiet constant, because he is in five films in a row from Rocky II to Rocky Balboa (2006), always in Rocky's corner.

The Creed films handle legacy casting with care. Lundgren and Nielsen return as Ivan and Ludmilla Drago in Creed II, thirty-three years after Rocky IV, and Florian Munteanu as Viktor Drago gives the family a second fighter who carries it into Creed III. Wood Harris plays Tony "Little Duke" Evers in Creed II and Creed III, and is billed as Tony "Little Duke" Burton in Creed (2015), a name that echoes Tony Burton's Duke. That being said, the biggest absence belongs to Rocky himself: Stallone plays him in eight films, and Creed III is the first film of the nine without him in the cast.
