Paulie Rocky: Who Paulie Pennino Is and Who Plays Him
Paulie in the Rocky films is Paulie Pennino, Adrian's brother and Rocky Balboa's friend, played by Burt Young in all six Rocky films, from Rocky (1976) to Rocky Balboa (2006). He is credited under the same name in every film and is billed third in Rocky (1976), directed by John G. Avildsen.
Who Plays Paulie Pennino?
Who Is Paulie in Rocky, and Who Plays Him?
Paulie is Paulie Pennino, the brother of Adrian and the friend who pushes Rocky Balboa toward her, and Burt Young plays him in every film in which he appears. The credits use one name for him throughout, Paulie Pennino, so there are no alternate names to track across the saga.
In Rocky (1976), directed by John G. Avildsen, he is billed third, behind Sylvester Stallone as Rocky and Talia Shire as Adrian. Carl Weathers follows him as Apollo Creed, and Burgess Meredith as the gym owner Mickey Goldmill. Paulie links the film's two halves: the romance with Adrian, who works in a pet store, and the corner team that forms around Rocky once Apollo Creed picks him as a challenger.
His surname matters a little. Adrian is credited as Adrianna 'Adrian' Pennino in the first film and as Adrianna 'Adrian' Balboa from Rocky II onward, so the Pennino name stays with her brother while her own name changes with her marriage. Talia Shire plays her in the first five films, from Rocky (1976) to Rocky V (1990).

Paulie's Story Arc Across the Rocky MoviesSpoilers
Paulie's arc runs through all six Rocky films, and it starts as a matchmaker and ends as a mourner. The detail is richest in the first film, where he sets up the date that begins the central romance. Rocky is awkward and lonely, Adrian is shy, and Paulie arranges the evening that slowly lets her warm to him.
Once Apollo Creed chooses Rocky for the New Year's Day bout, Paulie wants a place in the corner team. He grows jealous when Mickey is the one who offers to train Rocky, and Rocky smooths things over by promoting Paulie's employer. It is a small, practical gesture, and it tells you how Rocky handles friends: he fixes the problem with something useful rather than a speech.
Rocky II (1979) and Rocky III (1982), both directed by Stallone, keep Paulie billed third. In Rocky II he is now Rocky's brother in law, since Rocky has married Adrian. Rocky IV (1985) drops him to fifth billing as the story widens to Ivan Drago, Moscow and Siberia. Rocky V (1990), directed by Avildsen, brings the Balboas back to their old Philadelphia neighborhood and puts him third again.
In Rocky Balboa (2006), directed by Stallone, he is billed second. The Balboa of that film is a widower who runs a restaurant, and he visits Adrian's grave and the places that remind him of her with Paulie beside him.
Paulie's Relationships: Adrian, Rocky and the Corner
Paulie's key relationships are with his sister Adrian and with Rocky, and the family tie to Rocky becomes official when Rocky marries Adrian. The saga treats him as Rocky's brother in law from that point, and in Rocky Balboa (2006) Rocky visits Adrian's grave and the places that remind him of her with his brother in law Paulie.
With Adrian, he is the rougher presence in the background of a gentle character. The first film gives him credit for the introduction: he arranges the date, and Adrian slowly warms to Rocky afterward. See Adrian for her own arc and the name change from Pennino to Balboa.
With Rocky, the friendship carries a jealous edge in the first film, when Paulie wants to be part of the corner and Mickey gets the job instead. Rocky answers by promoting Paulie's employer. For Mickey's side of that triangle, see Mickey Goldmill, and for the fighter at the center of it, Rocky Balboa.
Rocky's son, Robert 'Rocky' Balboa Jr., makes Paulie an uncle. The credits name Ina Fried in Rocky III (1982), Sage Stallone in Rocky V (1990) and Milo Ventimiglia in Rocky Balboa (2006) for the part, and Paulie appears in all three of those films.
Does Paulie Die? Paulie's Fate in the Rocky SagaSpoilers
Paulie is alive in Rocky Balboa (2006), his last credited film, where he is billed second and keeps Rocky company as the widower grieves for Adrian.
That film ends with the fifteen round era far behind Rocky: a ten round exhibition in Las Vegas that he loses on a split decision, then a visit to Adrian's grave to tell her they did it. Paulie belongs to the quiet, personal stretch that leads there rather than to the fight itself.
He is not among the top billed cast of Creed (2015), Creed II (2018) or Creed III (2023), so those films do not settle what became of him after 2006. For the saga in full, the Rocky timeline lays out the order the films tell it in.
Best Paulie Moments in the Rocky Movies
In my opinion, Paulie's best stretch is the first film, because it is the only one where the plot genuinely needs him. Without his date arrangement there is no courtship between Rocky and Adrian, and without that the final embrace in the ring, with the result announced and ignored, loses its point.
The second moment I would pick is his jealousy over the corner in Rocky (1976). It makes him a person with a grievance rather than a stock sidekick, and Rocky's fix, promoting Paulie's employer, shows both men at their most human. It could be argued that this scene does more for the friendship than anything in the later sequels.
The third is the walk through the old places in Rocky Balboa. After four films in which he is billed third, third, fifth and third again, a second billing and a real role beside a grieving Rocky is a fair reward. That being said, Paulie is mostly a supporting presence from Rocky II to Rocky V, and a fan who skips those films will not miss his story. If you are new to the saga, start with the Rocky movies in order and let Paulie's smaller scenes find you.
