Cade Yeager in Transformers: Who He Is and Who Plays Him
Cade Yeager is the human lead of Transformers: Age of Extinction (2014) and Transformers: The Last Knight (2017), played by Mark Wahlberg in both films. He is a struggling Texas inventor who finds and repairs a wounded Optimus Prime, and that one act pulls him and his family into the war between the Autobots and the humans who hunt them.

Who Is Cade Yeager in Transformers?
Cade Yeager is a Texas inventor and the main human character of Transformers: Age of Extinction (2014) and Transformers: The Last Knight (2017), both directed by Michael Bay. Mark Wahlberg plays him and is billed first in both films, so anyone searching for the Cade Yeager actor is looking for Wahlberg. Cade Yeager is the character's only credited name, so there is no separate "real name" behind it.
Cade is not a Transformer. Fans often ask which Transformer Wahlberg played, and the answer is none: Cade is a human who works with the Autobots, mainly with Optimus Prime, and Wahlberg appears on screen rather than voicing a robot.
When we first meet him in Age of Extinction, Cade is a struggling inventor in Texas, five years after the battle of Chicago, at a time when humans see the Transformers as a threat. His daughter is Tessa Yeager, played by Nicola Peltz Beckham. That mix of tinkerer, father and Autobot ally is what separates him from Sam Witwicky, the teenager who anchored the first three films.
Cade does not appear in Transformers: Rise of the Beasts (2023), which is set in 1994 and follows Noah Diaz. That story takes place well before the present day of Cade's films, so he has no part in it. The full cast lives on the Transformers cast page, and the Transformers characters index links every main figure.

Cade Yeager's Story Across Age of Extinction and The Last KnightSpoilers
Cade's story runs through two films: in the first he rescues Optimus Prime and takes on the CIA, and in the second he is pulled into the hidden history of Transformers on Earth, which reaches back to 484 AD.
In Age of Extinction, the CIA unit Cemetery Wind, led by Harold Attinger, hunts the Autobots with help from the bounty hunter Lockdown. Cade finds the badly wounded Optimus and repairs him, which draws Cemetery Wind to the farm. Cade, Tessa and her boyfriend Shane Dyson escape with Optimus, and Optimus calls in the surviving Autobots. Cade then sneaks into the Chicago headquarters of the tech company KSI, where he discovers that its CEO, Joshua Joyce, is melting down fallen Transformers to build drone soldiers. One of them, Galvatron, is built from Megatron's remains and breaks free of Joyce's control.
Lockdown captures Optimus and Tessa, so Cade, Shane and the Autobots board his ship to save them. They seize a smaller ship that carries the Dinobots, and a battle in Hong Kong follows. In the final fight Optimus kills Attinger to save Cade, Tessa and Shane free Optimus from Lockdown, and Optimus uses Lockdown's own grenade to kill him. Galvatron flees, and Optimus asks the Autobots to protect the Yeager family before he flies into space.
By The Last Knight, Cade is sheltering outcast Transformers in a junkyard while a government task force hunts them. He picks up a talisman from a dying robot, and Megatron's Decepticons team up with the government to take it. Sir Edmund Burton invites him to England and explains the secret history of Transformers on Earth, from Merlin and the Knights of Iacon onward. Oxford professor Viviane Wembly proves to be Merlin's descendant, the only person able to use his staff. Cade's talisman turns into Excalibur and the Knights of Iacon accept him, just as the humans and Autobots attack Cybertron while it closes in on Earth.
Cade Yeager's Allies and Enemies
Cade's closest bonds are with his daughter and with Optimus Prime, while his main opponents are the people who want the Transformers gone.
Tessa Yeager is at the center of the farm escape in Age of Extinction. Her boyfriend Shane Dyson (Jack Reynor) escapes with them, and the three of them work as a unit when Lockdown captures Optimus and Tessa. Optimus Prime is the second key relationship. Cade finds him hiding in Texas and repairs him, and Optimus's last request in Age of Extinction is that the Autobots look after the Yeager family.
On the human side, Harold Attinger (Kelsey Grammer) runs Cemetery Wind and wants Optimus delivered to Lockdown, while Joshua Joyce (Stanley Tucci) is a more complicated figure, a tech boss building drones from the metal of fallen Transformers. Lockdown (voiced by Mark Ryan) is the bounty hunter who works for the Creators.
In The Last Knight, Cade's circle changes. Sir Edmund Burton (Anthony Hopkins) becomes his guide to the hidden history, and Viviane Wembly (Laura Haddock) is the professor who can use Merlin's staff. Quintessa (Gemma Chan) is the new enemy, the being who corrupts Optimus on Cybertron. Tessa is not among the leading billed cast of The Last Knight. The fuller picture of how these films connect is on the Transformers timeline.
What Happens to Cade Yeager?Spoilers
Cade Yeager's last story beat is the battle at Cybertron at the end of The Last Knight, when the draining of Earth is stopped.
At the close of Age of Extinction, Galvatron retreats and Optimus takes the Seed and flies into space, leaving the Autobots to watch over the Yeager family. In The Last Knight, Cade's talisman becomes Excalibur and the Knights of Iacon accept him. Optimus overcomes his corruption and defeats Megatron, and Bumblebee appears to finish off Quintessa. Cybertron stops draining Earth, and the Autobots leave to rebuild their home world.
A short post credit scene shows Quintessa alive, in human form, walking through a desert toward scientists studying a huge horn that is sticking out of the ground. She warns them not to touch it because "he" would not like it, and names Unicron. Cade is not in that scene.
That leaves open whether he returns. The new Transformers movie is in development, and TheWrap reported on October 6, 2026 that Michael Bay is in early talks to direct, with Steven Spielberg overseeing the franchise, a modern day setting and Shia LaBeouf not returning. The same report names no cast, no title and no release date, and nothing published confirms that Cade or Mark Wahlberg will be part of it.
Best Cade Yeager Moments
In my opinion, Cade works best when he is helping the Autobots out of a tight spot, and his strongest scenes are the ones that put an ordinary inventor in the middle of a giant robot story.
The first is the farm escape in Age of Extinction, when Cemetery Wind closes in and Cade, Tessa, Shane and a freshly repaired Optimus have to get out together. In my view, it is the film's cleanest introduction to the idea that a regular person can be useful to a giant alien robot. The second is the break in at the KSI building in Chicago, because it is where Cade learns what Joyce is doing with the metal of dead Transformers, and it turns a chase movie into a story about who owns Transformer technology.
The third is the rescue run on Lockdown's ship, with Cade, Shane and the Autobots boarding it and then seizing the smaller vessel with the Dinobots on it. It could be argued that this is the one stretch where Cade is a genuine member of the team instead of a bystander.
From The Last Knight, my pick is the moment his talisman becomes Excalibur and the Knights of Iacon accept him. That scene is a retcon of the saga's history, and I think it is silly in the best sense, since it hands a Texas inventor a sword from Arthurian legend. For where the two films sit in the series, see the Transformers movies in order guide and the Transformers movies ranked page.

FAQs
Which Transformer did Mark Wahlberg play in?
Mark Wahlberg did not play a Transformer. He plays Cade Yeager, a human inventor, in Transformers: Age of Extinction (2014) and Transformers: The Last Knight (2017). Cade works alongside Optimus Prime and the Autobots, but he is a person, not a robot.
Why is Mark Wahlberg not in Transformers: Rise of the Beasts?
Cade Yeager does not appear in Transformers: Rise of the Beasts (2023). That film is set in 1994 and centers on Noah Diaz, played by Anthony Ramos, so it takes place well before the present day of Cade's two films. Wahlberg is not in the film's cast.
Where is Cade Yeager's daughter in Transformers 5?
Tessa Yeager, played by Nicola Peltz Beckham in Age of Extinction, is not among the leading billed cast of Transformers: The Last Knight. Cade's story in that film centers on Viviane Wembly, Sir Edmund Burton and the hunt for Merlin's staff.
Why is Optimus barely in The Last Knight?
Optimus Prime is separated from Cade in The Last Knight. After leaving Earth, he reaches the ruins of Cybertron, where Quintessa corrupts him into Nemesis Prime and sends him back to Earth to fetch Merlin's staff. That makes him an enemy until he overcomes his corruption near the end.
Who plays Cade Yeager?
Mark Wahlberg plays Cade Yeager and is billed first in both Transformers: Age of Extinction and Transformers: The Last Knight.
Will Cade Yeager be in the new Transformers movie?
Nothing published confirms it. The next Transformers film is in development with no title, cast or release date, and TheWrap reported in October 2026 that Michael Bay is in early talks to direct and that Shia LaBeouf is not returning.
