Transformers Characters List: Who Matters in Every FilmSpoilers
The main Transformers characters are the leaders Optimus Prime and Megatron, the scout Bumblebee, the schemers Starscream and Galvatron, and a rotating set of human leads who change with each era of the saga. The series covers seven live action films, from Transformers (2007) to Transformers: Rise of the Beasts, plus two animated spin-offs. Character fates are discussed below, so the text from here on contains spoilers. For the order the films unfold in, see Transformers movies in order, and for the full roster of actors see the Transformers cast page.
Who Are the Most Famous Transformers Characters?
The most famous Transformers character is Optimus Prime, the Autobot leader, voiced by Peter Cullen in all seven live action films and in The Transformers: The Movie (1986), directed by Nelson Shin, where Cullen also voices Ironhide. In Transformers One (2024), directed by Josh Cooley, the younger Orion Pax who grows into Optimus is voiced by Chris Hemsworth. His opposite number is Megatron, voiced by Hugo Weaving in Transformers (2007), Transformers: Revenge of the Fallen and Transformers: Dark of the Moon, and by Brian Tyree Henry as D-16 in Transformers One, where the friendship between Orion and D-16 is the spine of the story.
The yellow scout is the other household name. Bumblebee the character is voiced by Mark Ryan in 2007, by Erik Aadahl in Transformers: The Last Knight and by Dylan O'Brien as B-127 in the Bumblebee movie (2018), directed by Travis Knight. Keegan-Michael Key voices B-127 in Transformers One.
Then come the Decepticon lieutenants. Starscream is voiced by Charlie Adler in 2007 and by Steve Buscemi in Transformers One, where he first appears as the High Guard leader that D-16 beats. Soundwave is voiced by Frank Welker in 1986 and by Jon Bailey in Transformers One. Galvatron appears twice: Leonard Nimoy voices the Megatron rebuilt by Unicron in the 1986 film, and Frank Welker voices the version built from Megatron's remains in Transformers: Age of Extinction. Sentinel Prime is the traitor, voiced by Nimoy in Dark of the Moon and by Jon Hamm in Transformers One.
Some names are smaller but still matter. Ratchet is killed by Lockdown in Age of Extinction. Jazz is voiced by Scatman Crothers in 1986 and by Evan Michael Lee in Transformers One. Grimlock is voiced by Gregg Berger in 1986, and the Dinobots return in Age of Extinction when Optimus frees them in Hong Kong.
Who Are the Main Human Characters in Transformers?
The main human characters change with each era, and each era has a lead. Sam Witwicky, played by Shia LaBeouf, anchors the first three films alongside Mikaela Banes (Megan Fox in 2007 and Revenge of the Fallen). Josh Duhamel plays Colonel William Lennox (credited as Captain, Major and Colonel in different films) in four films, and Tyrese Gibson plays Epps in the first three. John Turturro appears as Simmons in the same three, and Rosie Huntington-Whiteley joins as Carly in Dark of the Moon.
Age of Extinction resets the cast around Cade Yeager, played by Mark Wahlberg in that film and in The Last Knight. His daughter Tessa is Nicola Peltz Beckham, and her boyfriend Shane is Jack Reynor. Stanley Tucci plays the tech boss Joshua Joyce, and Kelsey Grammer plays the CIA hunter Harold Attinger. The Last Knight adds Laura Haddock as Oxford professor Viviane Wembly and Anthony Hopkins as Sir Edmund Burton, who is killed by Megatron at Stonehenge.
The prequels bring new faces. Charlie Watson is played by Hailee Steinfeld, with Jorge Lendeborg Jr. as her neighbor Memo and John Cena as Colonel Jack Burns. In Rise of the Beasts, Noah Diaz is played by Anthony Ramos, and Dominique Fishback plays the museum intern Elena Wallace, who unknowingly exposes the Transwarp Key.
Who Are the Female Transformers Characters?
The female Transformers characters are fewer, but they carry real plot. Elita-1, voiced by Scarlett Johansson in Transformers One, is the miner supervisor who helps Orion rally the High Guard and the miners. Arcee appears in the 1986 film (Susan Blu), in Rise of the Beasts (Liza Koshy) and, with Chromia, in Transformers One (Jinny Chung). Airazor, a Maximal voiced by Michelle Yeoh in Rise of the Beasts, is corrupted by Scourge and begs Optimus Primal to kill her. Gemma Chan plays Quintessa in The Last Knight, and Vanessa Liguori voices Airachnid in Transformers One.
Who Are the Actors in the Movie Transformers One?
The Transformers One voice cast is Chris Hemsworth as Orion Pax and Optimus Prime, Brian Tyree Henry as D-16 and Megatron, Scarlett Johansson as Elita-1, Keegan-Michael Key as B-127, Jon Hamm as Sentinel Prime, Steve Buscemi as Starscream and Laurence Fishburne as Alpha Trion. Alpha Trion is the Prime who tells the group that Sentinel murdered the real Primes, and Sentinel executes him soon after.
Who Were the Original Primes, and Who Is the Oldest Transformer?
Revenge of the Fallen is the film that deals most directly with the original Primes, and it counts seven who harvested suns for energy. One of them broke their rule by trying to destroy Earth's sun and became the Fallen, voiced by Tony Todd. The films do not name a single oldest Transformer, but the oldest figures they show are those ancient Primes and Unicron, the planet eating Transformer voiced by Orson Welles in 1986. Transformers One adds a different line of Primes, killed by Sentinel before the story begins.
Which Characters Carry the Saga? An Opinion
In my opinion, the characters who matter most are the ones the films keep breaking and rebuilding, and Optimus Prime is the clearest case. He dies in 1986 and passes the Matrix of Leadership to Hot Rod, who becomes Rodimus Prime. He is killed protecting Sam in Revenge of the Fallen, then returns when Sam uses the Matrix and Jetfire gives up his own body to join with him. In The Last Knight Quintessa corrupts him into Nemesis Prime, and Transformers One finally shows the miner Orion Pax becoming Optimus only after D-16 shoots him. That is four very different ways of asking what a Prime is, and Cullen's voice is the constant through three of them.
Megatron is the better comparison. He is destroyed twice in the live action run: Sam drives the AllSpark into his chest in 2007, and Optimus kills him in Dark of the Moon. Even then, Age of Extinction builds Galvatron from his remains, so the franchise treats him less as a character than as a recurring problem. Transformers One does the opposite and gives him a face, a friend and a stolen cog, which could be argued as the most human version of the villain.
Bumblebee works best when he is limited. In the 2018 film Blitzwing rips out his voice box, so Charlie Watson has to read him through a car radio and his body language. Rise of the Beasts kills him at Scourge's hands before Mirage's exo-suit and the final battle bring him back online. As for the humans, perhaps the most telling contrast is between Sam, who ends up carrying the AllSpark, and Charlie and Noah, who are driven by grief and a sick brother. The prequel leads feel more grounded than the original trio, and that is a big reason those films land differently.

No characters have been announced for the new Transformers movie. TheWrap reported on October 6, 2026 that Michael Bay is in early talks to direct an untitled, modern day film and that Shia LaBeouf is not returning. The film has no release date, no title and no confirmed cast.
