How many Frozen moviesWhat Are the Frozen Movies About?
The Frozen franchise is a Walt Disney Animation Studios series about two sisters in the kingdom of Arendelle, and it currently stands at two feature films and three shorts. In Frozen (2013), directed by Chris Buck and Jennifer Lee, Elsa is born with magical ice powers and accidentally hits her younger sister Anna with a blast of ice. Trolls heal Anna and erase her memory of the magic, the king and queen shut the castle gates, and the girls grow distant. When their parents die in a shipwreck, the sisters are left alone in the closed off castle. That setup drives the rest of the series, which is as much about two siblings finding their way back to each other as it is about ice and magic.
Frozen II (2019), directed by Jennifer Lee and Chris Buck, picks up some years after Elsa became queen. Life in Arendelle is peaceful until Elsa hears a strange singing voice that calls to her, and her use of her powers wakes the elemental spirits of nature. Arendelle has to evacuate, the troll leader Pabbie tells the sisters they must find out what happened in the past, and Elsa, Anna, Olaf, Kristoff and Sven head north to the Enchanted Forest, a place sealed off by a wall of mist. The first film runs 102 minutes and the second runs 103, so both fit comfortably into a single family evening. You can browse every release on the how many Frozen movies page.
The three shorts are small additions rather than required viewing. Frozen Fever (2015), directed by Jennifer Lee and Chris Buck, runs 8 minutes and takes place at Anna's birthday party, where Elsa wants to give her sister the best party she has ever had while hiding a cold. It played before Cinderella in theaters on March 13, 2015. Olaf's Frozen Adventure (2017), directed by Stevie Wermers-Skelton and Kevin Deters, runs about 22 minutes and sends Olaf across the kingdom with Sven and Kristoff's sleigh to collect holiday traditions for Anna and Elsa. Once Upon a Snowman (2020), directed by Dan Abraham and Trent Correy, is a 7 minute Disney Plus short about Olaf's first steps after Elsa brings him to life.
If you are choosing a film for children, the official ratings help. Frozen (2013) is rated PG in the US, the UK and Australia. Frozen II is rated PG in the US and Australia and U in the UK. All three shorts are rated G in the US.
The look of the series comes from real places. For the first film, the Disney team researched Norway and Quebec, and D23 lists Sami influence, rosemaling and an Oslo castle among the inspirations. For Frozen II, the filmmakers made a research trip and set the story in autumn, and Disney produced a Northern Sámi version with the Sámi Parliamentary Council and the Saami Council. Christophe Beck composed the score for both features, and the songs are covered on the Frozen soundtrack page. Frozen (2013) won two Oscars, Best Animated Feature and Best Original Song for Let It Go, and the people who made it are listed on the Frozen cast page.
Was the second film a hit or a flop? Frozen (2013) earned $1.31 billion worldwide on a $150 million budget, according to Box Office Mojo (The Numbers lists a lower worldwide figure of about $1.27 billion). Frozen II earned $1.45 billion worldwide on the same $150 million budget, so it out-grossed the first film by roughly $143 million. The full breakdown sits on the Frozen box office page, and anyone who wants a verdict on which film is best can read Frozen movies ranked.

Frozen Movies in Order: Where Do the Shorts Fit?
The simplest way to watch is Frozen (2013) first and Frozen II second, with the shorts as optional extras around them. Release order and story order differ only slightly, and the difference comes from the shorts. Here is the release order, with US dates:
- Frozen (2013), November 27, 2013
- Frozen Fever (short), March 13, 2015, shown before Cinderella
- Olaf's Frozen Adventure (short), November 22, 2017, shown before Coco
- Frozen II, November 22, 2019
- Once Upon a Snowman (short), October 23, 2020, on Disney Plus
And the chronological order, as the stories unfold:
- Frozen (2013), with Once Upon a Snowman slotting into its middle
- Frozen Fever
- Olaf's Frozen Adventure
- Frozen II
Once Upon a Snowman is the odd one out. It begins right after Elsa builds her ice palace and brings Olaf to life, and it ends before Olaf meets Anna and Kristoff in the main film, so it sits inside the first film's timeline even though it arrived in 2020. Olaf's Frozen Adventure takes place during the first Christmas season since the gates of Arendelle reopened, which puts it between the two features. Frozen Fever follows the first film and comes before the second.
If you are new to this, treat the shorts as a bonus and watch the two features back to back. That being said, if you want the extra story, Once Upon a Snowman is the one to pair with the first film, since it covers Olaf's first steps before he meets Anna and Kristoff. The full guide, with a line of context for every title, is on the Frozen movies in order page, and the Frozen timeline page covers the story beats in sequence.
Is There a Frozen 3 Movie Yet?
Not yet: Frozen III has been announced and has a confirmed US release date of November 24, 2027, the Wednesday before Thanksgiving, according to TheWrap and Box Office Mojo. Disney first showed concept art and a new logo for the film at D23 in August 2024 and said it would debut in 2027. The D23 showcase in August 2026 then listed the same theatrical date and showed first footage. UK and Australian dates have not been announced.
Who is making it? D23 confirms Kristen Bell as Anna, Idina Menzel as Elsa and Josh Gad as Olaf. Jennifer Lee and Trent Correy are confirmed as directors, and Christina Chen as producer. Correy previously co-directed Once Upon a Snowman (2020), so the Olaf short and the new feature share a filmmaker. TheWrap has also reported Peter Del Vecho as a producer, and Jennifer Lee, Kristen Anderson-Lopez and Robert Lopez as writers, but Disney has not confirmed those credits, so they are best read as reported.
Why is Frozen III coming out so late? The gap between Frozen II in November 2019 and Frozen III in November 2027 is eight years, and Disney has not published a reason for the wait. The date itself has moved once: Frozen III was earlier slotted for November 2026, and the studio announced the 2027 date at D23 in August 2024.
What about a fourth film? Frozen IV is a mention only for now. Disney has not confirmed it, and TheWrap reported in November 2025 that the main voice cast had signed deals covering both Frozen III and Frozen IV, with Disney declining to comment. The full status, date history and rumors table are on the Frozen 3 page, and any official videos are tracked on the Frozen 3 trailer page.
Who Are the Main Frozen Characters?
Frozen charactersThe main Frozen characters are the sisters Anna and Elsa, the ice harvester Kristoff, his reindeer Sven and the snowman Olaf, voiced across the series by Kristen Bell, Idina Menzel, Jonathan Groff and Josh Gad. They appear in both features and in most of the shorts, which gives the ensemble an unusual consistency for an animated series spread over more than a decade.
Anna Frozen is the younger sister, voiced by Kristen Bell, and she is the one who loses her memory of the magic after the opening accident. Elsa Frozen is the older sister with ice powers, voiced by Idina Menzel, and the story of what she can do is explained on the Elsa powers page. Kristoff, voiced by Jonathan Groff, is the third lead of the first film, and Groff is credited in Frozen II for Kristoff, Sven and the reindeer. Sven Frozen is Kristoff's reindeer companion. Olaf is the snowman Elsa brings to life, voiced by Josh Gad, and he is the star of both Olaf's Frozen Adventure and Once Upon a Snowman.
The supporting cast matters too. Hans Frozen is voiced by Santino Fontana, who is also credited as Hans in Frozen Fever. Evan Rachel Wood voices Iduna Frozen in Frozen II, and Alfred Molina voices Agnarr. Grand Pabbie is the troll leader voiced by Ciarán Hinds, who is credited as Pabbie and Grandpa in the first film and as Pabbie in the second. Alan Tudyk is the Duke in Frozen (2013), and Sterling K. Brown voices Mattias in Frozen II.
The home of most of these characters is Arendelle, and the complete roster, with who voices whom in each film, is on the Frozen characters page.
