Who Is in the Transformers Cast, Film by Film?

Shia LaBeouf, Megan Fox and Mark Wahlberg lead the human side of the Transformers cast, while Peter Cullen voices Optimus Prime in eight of the nine films. The humans change with each story era, and a small circle of voice actors carries the robots. LaBeouf plays Sam Witwicky in transformers 2007, transformers revenge of the fallen and transformers dark of the moon, with Fox as Mikaela Banes in the first two. Wahlberg then takes over as the inventor Cade Yeager in transformers age of extinction and transformers the last knight, and the later films start fresh with new human leads.

The table lists the billed actors and the main voice cast for each film, in release order. Each film name links to its own page, which is the place to go for a single film's full cast and character list.

The supporting human cast also repeats in the Bay era. Kevin Dunn and Julie White play Sam's parents, Ron and Judy Witwicky, across the first three films, which gives the family scenes a continuity the later films lack. Who Directed the Transformers Movies?

Michael Bay directed five of the seven main Transformers films, from Transformers (2007) through Transformers: The Last Knight (2017), and four other directors made the remaining films in the series. Nelson Shin directed the animated The Transformers: The Movie (1986), which runs 85 minutes. Travis Knight directed Bumblebee (2018), Steven Caple Jr. directed Transformers: Rise of the Beasts (2023), and Josh Cooley directed the animated Transformers One (2024).

Bay's five films carried budgets from $150 million for the first to $217 million for The Last Knight, according to Box Office Mojo. Transformers: Dark of the Moon (2011) earned the most of them, at more than $1.1 billion worldwide. Travis Knight's Bumblebee (2018) dialed the scale down, with a $135 million budget (Box Office Mojo's figure) and a 114 minute runtime against 165 minutes for Age of Extinction and 154 for The Last Knight. Transformers One (2024) had the smallest budget on record in the series at $75 million, according to The Numbers. For the full grosses, see transformers box office.

Scoring changed hands just as often. Vince DiCola scored the 1986 film, Steve Jablonsky scored every Bay film from 2007 to 2017, Dario Marianelli scored Bumblebee (2018), Jongnic Bontemps scored Rise of the Beasts (2023), and Brian Tyler scored Transformers One (2024). The songs and albums are covered in transformers soundtrack.

The next film is still in development. TheWrap reported on June 11, 2026 that Jason Fuchs was hired to write an untitled Transformers script for Paramount and Hasbro, continuing from Rise of the Beasts. The same report lists Lorenzo di Bonaventura, Mark Vahradian, Michael Bay, Tom DeSanto, Don Murphy and Steven Spielberg as producers. TheWrap also reported on October 6, 2026 that Paramount said Bay is in early talks to direct. No director is confirmed, and the details sit on the page for the new transformers movie.

Which Transformers Actors Returned and Which Were Recast?

Peter Cullen is the franchise's one constant, voicing Optimus Prime in eight of the nine films (everything except Transformers One), while almost everyone else came and went with their story era. In my opinion, that makes Cullen the real lead of the saga, because the human stars changed three times in 16 years and the voice of the Autobot leader never did.

Among the human actors, the returns are shorter than most people remember. Josh Duhamel appears in four films (2007, 2009, 2011 and 2017), the longest run of any human cast member. LaBeouf, Tyrese Gibson and John Turturro each appear in three, and Megan Fox appears in two, as the first two Bay entries. Wahlberg also appears in two, as Cade Yeager in 2014 and 2017. Stanley Tucci is the odd one out, playing Joshua Joyce in 2014 and then a completely different role, Merlin, in 2017. Rosie Huntington-Whiteley takes the female lead in 2011.

The robots are where recasting is most visible. Megatron is voiced by Frank Welker in 1986, Hugo Weaving in 2007, 2009 and 2011, and Brian Tyree Henry in Transformers One (2024). Galvatron goes from Leonard Nimoy in 1986 to Welker in 2014, and Nimoy also returns in 2011 as Sentinel Prime, a part Jon Hamm took over in 2024. Starscream moves from Charlie Adler to Steve Buscemi, and Arcee from Susan Blu in 1986 to Liza Koshy in 2023. Bumblebee has the busiest revolving door of all, with Dan Gilvezan in 1986, Mark Ryan in 2007, Erik Aadahl in 2017, Dylan O'Brien as B-127 in 2018 and Keegan-Michael Key in 2024. The practical point is that a voice actor is tied to a film era rather than to the character, so check the year before assuming a voice carries over.

It could be argued that the Wahlberg reboot and Bumblebee (2018) were the clearest clean breaks, since each kept little beyond Cullen from the previous cast. None of the Bay era human leads appear in the 2023 or 2024 films, and no cast has been announced for the next film. TheWrap reported on October 6, 2026 that Shia LaBeouf is not returning, which is a report rather than a studio announcement. TheWrap also reported a separate Transformers and G.I. Joe crossover film being written by Derek Connolly, and that remains a rumor. To see how the casts line up with the story, start from transformers movies and then the transformers timeline.
