Who Plays James Buchanan 'Bucky' Barnes?

Who Is Bucky Barnes and Who Plays Him?

Bucky Barnes is the wartime friend of Steve Rogers who later becomes the Winter Soldier, and Sebastian Stan plays him. The credits use several spellings: James Buchanan 'Bucky' Barnes in Captain America: The First Avenger, Bucky Barnes / Winter Soldier in Captain America: The Winter Soldier and Captain America: Civil War, and plain Bucky Barnes in Thunderbolts* (2025). Some of his smaller appearances are listed as uncredited. All of these are the same character, so a search for his real name or full name leads to James Buchanan Barnes.

Stan is billed third in Captain America: The First Avenger (2011), directed by Joe Johnston, and fifth in Captain America: The Winter Soldier (2014), directed by Joe Russo and Anthony Russo. He is billed fourth in Captain America: Civil War (2016) and second in Thunderbolts* (2025), directed by Jake Schreier. Between those billed roles, Bucky turns up in the post credit scenes of Ant-Man (2015) and Black Panther (2018), and he is among the people lost in Avengers: Infinity War (2018).

If you want to watch him in sequence, his appearances run in the same order in release order and in chronological order, so Marvel movies in order will not trip you up here. All seven films streamed on Disney Plus in the US as of November 3, 2026, and where to watch Marvel covers the UK and Australia too.

Bucky Barnes Movies: His Story Arc Film by FilmSpoilers

Bucky's arc has three stages: wartime friend, brainwashed assassin, and a man rebuilding his life, and the films tell it in a clean line. In Captain America: The First Avenger (2011), Steve Rogers goes behind enemy lines after he learns that his friend Bucky and other soldiers have been captured, and he frees them. Rogers then forms the Howling Commandos to raid Hydra bases. During one mission Bucky falls from a train and is believed dead.

Why is Bucky called the Winter Soldier? Because that is the name of the masked assassin he turns out to be in Captain America: The Winter Soldier (2014). The Winter Soldier ambushes Nick Fury, later kills Jasper Sitwell and attacks Rogers and his allies, and Rogers eventually sees that the assassin is Bucky, who was captured, brainwashed and kept frozen for decades. On the third airborne carrier, Barnes fights Rogers, and when Rogers falls into the river it is Barnes who pulls him out before he disappears. A post credit scene shows Bucky studying a museum exhibit about himself.

The post credit scene of Ant-Man (2015) shows Rogers and Sam Wilson holding Bucky in custody, with Wilson saying he knows someone who can help because Tony Stark cannot be reached. In Captain America: Civil War (2016), Bucky is named as the culprit of the bombing in Vienna that kills the king of Wakanda, and T'Challa hunts him. Rogers finds him first and protects him, and the real bomber, Zemo, uses his brainwashing trigger words to cause chaos. In Siberia, Zemo shows Rogers, Barnes and Stark footage proving that Barnes killed Stark's parents under Hydra's control. The fight that follows ends with Barnes' metal arm destroyed, and Rogers leaves his shield behind and walks away with him.

Barnes then goes to Wakanda and chooses to be put back into cryogenic sleep until his brainwashing can be cured, which a mid-credits scene shows. The post credit scene of Black Panther (2018) picks him up there, with Shuri helping him with his recovery.

Who Matters Most to Bucky Barnes?

The people who matter most to Bucky are Steve Rogers, Sam Wilson, Tony Stark, T'Challa and Shuri, and the films build all of those bonds around his time as the Winter Soldier. The relationships worth tracking are friendships, rivalries and debts.

The central one is with Steve Rogers / Captain America, played by Chris Evans, the friend who goes behind enemy lines to free him in The First Avenger. Rogers is also the one who finds Bucky first and protects him in Civil War.

Sam Wilson / Falcon, played by Anthony Mackie, is the second anchor. Wilson joins Rogers in the search for Bucky at the end of The Winter Soldier and holds him in custody beside Rogers in the post credit scene of Ant-Man (2015), and Mackie is billed fifth in Civil War.

The hardest relationship is with Tony Stark, because the Siberia footage shows Bucky killing Stark's parents under Hydra's control. T'Challa hunts him in Civil War and then gives him refuge in Wakanda, and Shuri helps with his recovery. Nick Fury, whom the Winter Soldier ambushes, belongs on the list of people he harmed before he knew who he was; you can read more about Nick Fury on his own page.

In Thunderbolts* (2025), Bucky is a congressman who takes Yelena Belova, played by Florence Pugh, and her team in to testify against Valentina Allegra de Fontaine, played by Julia Louis-Dreyfus.

What Happened to Bucky Barnes? His Fate So FarSpoilers

Bucky Barnes is alive as of Thunderbolts* (2025), where he serves as a congressman, after being presumed dead once and turned to dust once. The first apparent death is his fall from the train in Captain America: The First Avenger (2011). The second comes in Avengers: Infinity War (2018), when Thanos completes the Infinity Gauntlet, snaps his fingers, and half of all living things turn to dust, a group that includes Bucky.

That loss is undone in Avengers: Endgame (2019), where Bruce Banner uses the gathered Stones in a gauntlet and brings everyone back.

In Thunderbolts* (2025), Congressman Bucky Barnes takes the team in to testify against Valentina Allegra de Fontaine, and they all sneak into the Watchtower, the former Avengers Tower. Disney has set Avengers: Doomsday for December 18, 2026. For the wider order of events, see the Marvel timeline.

Best Bucky Barnes Moments (My Picks)

My best Bucky Barnes moments are the ones where the films let him be a person instead of a plot device, and they are fairly spread out. In my opinion, the strongest is the river rescue in The Winter Soldier, because the film has spent its second half presenting Bucky as a weapon, and then he pulls Rogers out of the water and disappears. It could be argued that the museum exhibit in that film's post credit scene is the quietest follow up in the saga, since it is just a man looking at a display about himself.

The Siberia fight in Civil War is the hardest scene to watch, and it works better than most set pieces in the franchise because the stakes are family, not the world. Stark attacks in rage after seeing the footage, and the fight ends with Barnes' metal arm destroyed and Stark's armor disabled by Rogers' shield. Compare that with the grand scale of the Leipzig/Halle Airport battle earlier in the same film, and the smaller brawl lands harder.

The decision to go back into cryogenic sleep in Wakanda is a close third, since Bucky chooses it until his brainwashing can be cured. Perhaps the most surprising moment is his turn in Thunderbolts* (2025), where the man once hunted for a bombing is the congressman escorting a team in to testify.
