Thunderbolts* (2025) Plot: The Setup

Thunderbolts* (2025) follows a group of government operatives who are sent into a hidden facility and have to work together to get out. Yelena Belova is a tired government assassin working for CIA director Valentina Allegra de Fontaine, and she has started to doubt the work she is given.

Valentina is under threat of impeachment and wants evidence of a secret program wiped out. So, she sends Yelena, John Walker, Ava Starr and Antonia Dreykov to the facility, where the four turn on each other in what looks like a trap. Instead of a target, they find a dazed, powerless looking man named Bob, and the group has to leave together.

Most of these characters arrive from earlier films, including Black Widow (2021), Ant-Man and the Wasp (2018) and the Captain America series. The full story, with every spoiler, follows in the next section.

Thunderbolts* (2025) Soundtrack and Score

Ryan Lott composed the score for Thunderbolts* (2025), and the soundtrack album, titled "Thunderbolts*", was released on April 30, 2025 by Hollywood Records. The album runs to 32 tracks and collects the film's music under the same title.

The score and the album are two different things. Lott holds the score credit for the film, while the album is a soundtrack release that carries the Thunderbolts* (2025) title. Anyone looking for the film's music should start with the album and then look for the score credit.

No individual songs are credited to Thunderbolts* (2025), so there are no song titles to list and no scenes where a particular track plays. The music people search for here is the score itself, and the album is the release that gathers it.

Lott is the only composer credited for Thunderbolts* (2025), which makes the score and the album together the film's full music credit. For the composers and albums behind every film in the franchise, see the Marvel soundtrack page on Cinvibe.

Thunderbolts* (2025) Plot Summary in FullSpoilers

Thunderbolts* (2025) ends with Yelena and her team surviving a citywide crisis caused by Bob, and with Valentina presenting them to the world as the New Avengers. Everything below gives away the story.

The film opens with Yelena destroying a lab in Kuala Lumpur on Valentina's orders. It is part of a clean up of a secret program run by the O.X.E. Group. Valentina then sends Yelena, Walker, Ava and Antonia to a vault, expecting them to kill one another. Ava kills Antonia, and the others find Bob, an amnesiac man who has just been released from a suspended animation pod.

Valentina's plan is to present Bob to the public as a heroic super being called Sentry. The group is captured, then freed by Alexei, the father figure in Yelena's life, and Walker gives the group its name, the Thunderbolts. Congressman Bucky Barnes takes the team in to testify against Valentina, and they all sneak into the Watchtower, the former Avengers Tower.

Bob joins Valentina as Sentry and spares the team, but then turns on her. Mel uses a kill switch to knock him out, and that frees his dark alter ego, the Void. The Void swallows New York City in darkness. Yelena walks into the dark, finds Bob, and the team faces his trauma with him. By showing him that they accept him, they help him overcome the Void.

Valentina then takes credit and introduces the team to the world as the New Avengers. Yelena tells her that the team now owns her.

Thunderbolts* (2025) Release Date, Premiere and Box Office

Thunderbolts* (2025) opened in the UK and Australia on May 1, 2025 and in the US on May 2, 2025. The UK date is confirmed by Disney, while the Australian date is reported by Box Office Mojo.

The Los Angeles premiere took place on April 28, 2025 at the Dolby Theatre. A European premiere came earlier, on April 22, 2025, at Cineworld Leicester Square in London.

At the box office, the film grossed $190 million domestically and $192 million internationally, for $382 million worldwide, according to Box Office Mojo. Against a $180 million budget, that is a little over twice the cost of making it, although marketing spend sits on top of a production budget. Within the same year, it sits between the two other Marvel Studios releases that bracket it, Captain America: Brave New World and The Fantastic 4: First Steps, and the full ledger is on the Marvel box office page. Trailers for the saga are collected on the trailers page.

Thunderbolts* (2025) Ending ExplainedSpoilers

The ending of Thunderbolts* (2025) means that the Avengers name now belongs to a damaged, improvised team instead of a polished one, and that the film's real climax is an act of acceptance, not a punch. The darkness lifts, Bob survives, and the team stands beside him. Valentina immediately tries to spin events by presenting the group as the New Avengers, and Yelena answers that the team now controls her.

In my opinion, the smartest choice is how the Void is beaten. The Void swallows New York City, a city the saga has already put through the Battle of New York in The Avengers (2012), and a bigger blast would have been the expected answer. Instead, Yelena walks into the dark and the team tells Bob he is accepted, which lets him overcome his alter ego. It could be argued that this works because the Void is Bob's own dark alter ego, so the cure has to be personal. Compare the finales of Avengers: Infinity War and Avengers: Endgame, which are won by force and sacrifice on a huge canvas; here the stakes are huge but the solution is a conversation.

The Valentina exchange is the other half. She wants a hero brand she can steer, and Yelena's line tells her that the leash now runs the other way. Perhaps the quiet joke is that a team of former tools of the state becomes the public face of the Avengers by accident. Most of that team grew up in the margins of other films: Yelena and Alexei in Black Widow (2021), where the Red Room under Dreykov shaped their family, Antonia as Taskmaster, and Bucky across the Captain America films. Seeing them become the headline act is a pay off those films quietly set up.

There is also a production reason it lands. The third act was staged on a full-scale recreation of New York's 45th Street built in Atlanta, according to Time Out, so the characters physically stand in a street rather than against a green screen, and the emotional beat of the team walking toward Bob reads as intimate. The post credit scene picks the thread up directly, with the New Avengers dealing with a trademark lawsuit from Sam Wilson over the name.

Thunderbolts* (2025) Post Credit Scene ExplainedSpoilers

Thunderbolts* (2025) has a post credit scene set about a year after the main story, and it does two things. First, the New Avengers and Bob talk about a trademark lawsuit from Sam Wilson over the Avengers name. That connects the film to Sam Wilson as Captain America, the lead of Captain America: Brave New World, released earlier in 2025.

Second, the Watchtower picks up an unidentified spacecraft marked with a Fantastic Four style emblem. The next Marvel Studios release, The Fantastic 4: First Steps, arrived on July 25, 2025, less than three months after Thunderbolts* (2025).

Thunderbolts* (2025) Filming Locations

Thunderbolts* (2025) was filmed mainly in Atlanta, with major action sequences shot in Kuala Lumpur and Utah, and real New York footage added to the mix. Here is where each part was made:

  • Atlanta, Georgia, USA: soundstage and practical sets at Trilith Studios and Atlanta Metro Studios, including a full scale New York 45th Street for the third act and a Watchtower (Avengers Tower) set.
  • Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia: the Merdeka 118 skyscraper jump and Medan Pasar Square.
  • Emery County and Grand County, Utah, USA: the car chase and Bucky's motorcycle entrance.
  • New York City, USA: real exteriors, helicopter shots and street backgrounds, combined with the Atlanta footage.

In my opinion, that blend is why the finale feels rooted in a real street, since the Atlanta 45th Street build and the New York exteriors were cut together.

Thunderbolts* (2025) Trivia and Production Facts

Several of the biggest set pieces in Thunderbolts* (2025) were done for real, and that is the best production story behind the film. Here are the main production facts:

  • Florence Pugh performed the opening skyscraper jump at Merdeka 118 in Kuala Lumpur herself, without a stunt double, and three engineering firms certified the platform.
  • In Kuala Lumpur, the crew blew up a level of an HSBC tower at Medan Pasar Square for real.
  • For the Utah car chase, the crew closed a mile long stretch of road for two weeks and used two limousines and five Humvees.
  • The third act used a full scale recreation of New York's 45th Street built in Atlanta.
  • The score was composed by the trio Son Lux, and the soundtrack album arrived digitally on April 30, 2025.
  • The Numbers lists the production budget as $180 million.
