Captain America: The First Avenger Plot Summary

Captain America: The First Avenger is a World War II story in which a small, sickly volunteer from Brooklyn becomes the Army's first super soldier and faces the Nazi weapons branch Hydra. It opens in 1942, when the Nazi officer Johann Schmidt, who leads Hydra, seizes a powerful cosmic artifact called the Tesseract in Norway.

In New York, Steve Rogers keeps trying to enlist and keeps getting rejected. Dr. Abraham Erskine notices his determination and picks him for a secret super soldier program, run with Colonel Phillips, the inventor Howard Stark and the British agent Peggy Carter. Rogers is transformed into a strong, fast soldier, but an assassin strikes right after the procedure and the program's future is thrown into doubt.

That is the setup for everything that follows: one volunteer against a villain who already holds a weapon of cosmic scale. If you are new to the saga, this is a tidy place to meet Rogers, because the story explains who he is before it asks what he can do. The full story, ending included, is in the spoiler section that follows.

Captain America: The First Avenger Soundtrack and Score

Alan Silvestri composed the score for Captain America: The First Avenger (2011), and the score album, "Captain America: The First Avenger," was released on July 19, 2011 by Buena Vista Records. The album runs to 26 tracks, and Silvestri is the only composer credited on it.

The film also has one credited song, and it was written for the movie:

  • "Star Spangled Man" by Alan Menken and David Zippel (written for the film)

Menken and Zippel wrote "Star Spangled Man" for the film, which makes it the one track that sits apart from Silvestri's score. Because Menken and Zippel are credited as its artists, the song is easy to pick out from the score when you browse a playlist of the film's music. Anyone looking for a song from the film should start with that title, while the rest of the music is Silvestri's score.

For the other composers, albums and songs across the saga, see the marvel soundtrack page on Cinvibe.

Captain America: The First Avenger Full Plot (Spoilers)Spoilers

In 1942, Hydra leader Johann Schmidt takes the Tesseract from a church in occupied Norway. In Brooklyn, frail Steve Rogers is turned down by the Army again and again until Dr. Erskine offers him a place in an experimental program. The serum works, but a Hydra spy kills Erskine and the formula is lost, leaving Rogers as the only super soldier.

The Army first uses him as a stage mascot called Captain America to sell war bonds. Everything changes when he learns that his friend Bucky Barnes and other soldiers have been captured. Rogers goes behind enemy lines and frees them, then forms a team, the Howling Commandos, to raid Hydra bases one by one. Schmidt, who has revealed his Red Skull face, plans to use the Tesseract's power to attack major cities.

During a mission, Bucky falls from a train and is believed dead. Rogers and the Commandos reach Schmidt's last base, and Rogers boards the giant bomber that is meant to hit the United States. Schmidt grabs the Tesseract, its energy consumes him, and he vanishes. Rogers cannot safely land the plane, so he crashes it into the Arctic and says goodbye to Peggy by radio.

Decades later he wakes in a room that looks like the 1940s, realizes it is a setup, and runs out into modern Times Square. There he meets Nick Fury, who tells him he has been frozen for almost 70 years.

Captain America: The First Avenger Release Date, Premiere and Box Office

Captain America: The First Avenger premiered on July 19, 2011 at the El Capitan Theatre in Hollywood, California, three days before its US release on July 22, 2011. The UK release followed on July 29, 2011 and Australia on July 28, 2011. The film is rated PG-13 in the US, 12A in the UK and M in Australia, and it runs 124 minutes.

At the box office it earned about $176.7 million domestically and $193.9 million internationally, for a worldwide total of about $371 million, according to Box Office Mojo. The budget was $140 million, so it grossed more than two and a half times its cost.

Placed beside its neighbors, the picture is easy to read. Among the first six films by release order, it ranks fifth by worldwide gross: ahead of The Incredible Hulk, and behind Thor, Iron Man (2008), Iron Man 2 and The Avengers (2012), which sits well clear at the top. Those comparisons rest on Box Office Mojo totals. For the whole saga, see the marvel box office page.

The Ending Explained: Why Steve Rogers Wakes Up in Times SquareSpoilers

The ending explained in one line: Steve Rogers crashes the Hydra bomber into the Arctic to protect American cities, and he wakes up almost 70 years later in a world that has moved on without him. He cannot safely land the plane, and Schmidt has already been consumed by the Tesseract, so crashing the bomber is how Rogers stops it. His radio goodbye to Peggy Carter is the cost of that choice, because he gives up his time and the people he knew.

The fake 1940s room sets up the wake-up scene. When Rogers realizes the setup and runs into Times Square, Nick Fury is waiting, and the film hands its hero from a war story to a larger one.

Three threads carry forward. First, the Tesseract that swallows Schmidt is back in play in The Avengers (2012), where Loki makes a deal to deliver it. Second, Captain America: The Winter Soldier picks up two years after the Battle of New York with Rogers working for S.H.I.E.L.D. in Washington, D.C. and still adjusting to the modern world. Third, Bucky, believed dead after the train fall, is billed as Bucky Barnes / Winter Soldier in that later film, and he returns again in Captain America: Civil War.

In my opinion, choosing a quiet loss over a victory parade is what lifts this ending above the usual hero finale. It could be argued that the film earns it by spending its second half on the friendships it then takes away, and perhaps that is why the waking scene still lands when you rewatch it.

Captain America: The First Avenger Post Credit SceneSpoilers

Captain America: The First Avenger has one post credit scene, in which Nick Fury walks up to Rogers and offers him a mission with worldwide consequences. A teaser for The Avengers also played after the credits.

In practice, this is the handshake between the standalone origin films and the team-up. Rogers has just woken in a changed century, and Fury's offer gives him a reason to stay in it. The Avengers (2012) is where that offer pays off, and it arrives next in release order, as the sixth film after this fifth one. If you are heading into the next big crossover, Avengers: Doomsday is set for December 18, 2026 in US theaters.

Facts

FAQs

Was Captain America actually the first Avenger?

Not as a team member on screen, because the Avengers do not exist yet in this film. His film is first in the saga's chronological order, set in 1942, almost 70 years before the team forms. In The Avengers (2012), Nick Fury recruits Natasha Romanoff, Bruce Banner, Steve Rogers and Tony Stark, so the title reads as a nod to Rogers' head start in the timeline.

How did they make Captain America so small in First Avenger?

Visual effects company LOLA digitally shrank Chris Evans to create the skinny Steve Rogers seen before the serum. The film used about 1,600 visual effects shots in total, split among thirteen companies, so the effect sat inside a much larger effects workload.

In what order do I watch Captain America?

By release order the Captain America films are Captain America: The First Avenger (fifth overall), Captain America: The Winter Soldier (ninth), Captain America: Civil War (thirteenth) and Captain America: Brave New World (thirty second). In chronological order they run first, tenth, fifteenth and thirty second. Brave New World stars Anthony Mackie as Sam Wilson in the Captain America role. Rogers also appears in The Avengers (2012).
