Steve Rogers: Captain America and the Actor Who Plays Him
Steve Rogers is the real name of Captain America, the Brooklyn super soldier played by Chris Evans in Marvel Studios films from Captain America: The First Avenger (2011) to Avengers: Endgame (2019). The credits place him in nine films, and he ends his story by living a full life in the past with Peggy Carter before handing his shield to Sam Wilson.
Who Plays Captain America / Steve Rogers?
Who Is Steve Rogers? The Real Name Behind Captain America
Steve Rogers is the real name of Captain America, and Chris Evans plays him in the Marvel Studios films. Captain America is the stage name the Army gave him, while Steve Rogers is the small Brooklyn man who was turned down for service again and again. The credits use "Captain America / Steve Rogers" and "Steve Rogers / Captain America", and both point to the same character.
He is introduced in 1942 in Captain America: The First Avenger (2011), directed by Joe Johnston. The film shows him as small and sickly and never names a diagnosis, so there is no official answer to which health conditions he had beyond that frailty. Dr. Abraham Erskine picks him for an experimental program because of his determination, and the serum turns him into a strong, fast soldier. Erskine is killed right afterward and the formula is lost, which leaves Rogers as the only super soldier.
Marvel confirmed Evans as the lead, and TheWrap reported a nine picture deal at the time. Evans also appears in Deadpool & Wolverine (2024) as Johnny Storm, which is a different role. For the wider ensemble, see the Marvel cast page.

Steve Rogers Movies: His Story Across the MCUSpoilers
Steve Rogers is credited in nine Marvel films, and across them he moves from a soldier out of time to a man who chooses his own life. The Marvel movies in order guide gives the full viewing sequence, and what follows tracks his own path in release order.
Captain America: The First Avenger (2011). Rogers frees captured soldiers, forms the Howling Commandos and raids Hydra bases. Bucky Barnes falls from a train and is believed dead. Rogers then crashes Johann Schmidt's giant bomber into the Arctic, saying goodbye to Peggy by radio. He wakes decades later, runs into Times Square and meets Nick Fury, who tells him he has been frozen for almost 70 years.
The Avengers (2012). Fury and Agent Coulson bring Rogers in after the Tesseract is stolen. He confronts Loki in Stuttgart alongside Stark and Romanoff, the team argues after learning S.H.I.E.L.D. wanted to use the Tesseract to build weapons, and he then helps defend New York against the Chitauri.
Captain America: The Winter Soldier (2014). Rogers works for S.H.I.E.L.D. in Washington, D.C. and learns that Hydra has grown inside it. He discovers the Winter Soldier is Bucky Barnes, helps bring down the carriers and ends the film searching for Bucky.
Avengers: Age of Ultron (2015). At the end, Rogers and Natasha Romanoff set up a new Avengers base and begin training a new group.
Ant-Man (2015). A post credits scene shows Rogers and Sam Wilson holding Bucky in custody.
Captain America: Civil War (2016). Rogers refuses to sign the oversight accords, protects Bucky and splits the Avengers. After the Siberia fight he leaves his shield behind, and he later breaks his imprisoned allies out of the Raft.
Spider-Man: Homecoming (2017). Captain America appears in a safety message in the credits. The film belongs to the Spider-Man franchise, so Spider-Man: Homecoming is covered there.
Avengers: Infinity War (2018). He shelters Vision and Wanda Maximoff and fights beside the Wakandans against Thanos's army.
Captain Marvel (2019). The credits list Rogers in this 1995 prequel, directed by Ryan Fleck and Anna Boden, which ends with a mid-credits scene set in 2018 where the Avengers watch Fury's pager activate.
Avengers: Endgame (2019). The team uses time travel to gather the Stones, and Rogers ends his arc by choosing a life of his own.
Who Matters Most to Steve Rogers? Allies, Rivals and Love
Steve Rogers is defined by four close bonds: Bucky Barnes, Peggy Carter, Tony Stark and Sam Wilson. Each pulls him in a different direction, which is why his arc reads as a character study as much as a war story.
Bucky Barnes (Sebastian Stan) is his friend from the 1940s. Rogers sees him fall from a train in Captain America: The First Avenger, meets him again as the brainwashed Winter Soldier, and defends him in Civil War even when it costs him the Avengers. More on Bucky Barnes.
Peggy Carter (Hayley Atwell) is the romance the films build. If you are asking who kissed Steve Rogers, Peggy is the answer the saga leans on: the 1942 film ends with their radio goodbye, and Endgame answers it by sending him back to live his life with her.
Tony Stark (Robert Downey Jr.) starts as his opposite in The Avengers (2012) and becomes his hardest conflict in Civil War, where the Siberia fight ends with Rogers' shield disabling Stark's armor. In Endgame, Tony dies after using the Stones to erase Thanos and his army, and his friends and family hold a funeral for him. Why did Steve cry when Tony died? Endgame gives no single stated reason, but it could be argued that the history explains it: a friend who was once his fiercest opponent gave his life to undo the snap. See Tony Stark.
Sam Wilson (Anthony Mackie) is the friend he makes in The Winter Soldier and the man who later inherits the shield. See Sam Wilson.
Two more relationships frame his story: Nick Fury, who pulls him into the modern world, and Natasha Romanoff, his partner on the run in The Winter Soldier.
What Happened to Steve Rogers After Endgame?Spoilers
After Avengers: Endgame, Steve Rogers is alive and has lived a full life in the past with Peggy Carter. Once the Stones have been used and Tony Stark dies from the strain, Rogers goes back to return the Stones to their original times, then decides to stay there. The film shows him return as an elderly man.
That also answers whether Steve Rogers aged. In The First Avenger he crashes the plane into the Arctic ice, and Nick Fury later tells him he has been frozen for almost 70 years. In Endgame, the choice to remain in the past is what lets him grow old. The old man hands his shield to Sam Wilson, who becomes the new Captain America, and Anthony Mackie plays that role in Captain America: Brave New World (2025).
Will Steve Rogers be in Avengers: Doomsday? No studio or trade report has confirmed it, so any claim that he returns is a rumor and not a casting announcement. The film is set for December 18, 2026, and the Avengers Doomsday page covers its confirmed cast and status.
Steve Rogers' Best Moments: Our Pick
In my opinion, Steve Rogers works best when the films let him be stubborn about small, human things, and five moments show it.
First, the Times Square wake up in Captain America: The First Avenger. He is placed in a room dressed to look like the 1940s, sees through it, and runs out into a century that does not know him. It tells you quickly what the war cost him.
Second, the radio goodbye to Peggy before the Arctic crash. It is the sacrifice that defines him, and it makes his choice in Endgame feel earned.
Third, in Captain America: The Winter Soldier, he tells the S.H.I.E.L.D. staff the truth about Hydra, then helps swap targeting chips so the carriers fire on one another. It is the best case I know for him as a leader and not just a fighter.
Fourth, in Captain America: Civil War, he leaves his shield behind in Siberia. It could be argued that no other moment shows him giving up the symbol to keep his principles.
Fifth, the shield handoff to Sam Wilson. Perhaps it is the quietest ending a franchise this large could have given him. The Marvel timeline shows where it falls.
