Black Panther: Wakanda Forever Plot: The Setup

Black Panther: Wakanda Forever opens with the death of King T'Challa from an illness, and the rest of the story is Wakanda's response to losing him. His sister Shuri, a brilliant scientist, runs out of time trying to recreate the heart shaped herb that might have saved him. A year later, other nations are pressing Wakanda over its vibranium, and Queen Ramonda holds the country together while asking Shuri to keep working on the herb. Shuri refuses, so no new Black Panther exists.

Then an American team finds vibranium deep underwater and is wiped out by blue skinned warriors who serve Namor, ruler of the hidden kingdom of Talokan. Namor warns Wakanda that he will attack unless it hands over the young scientist who built the vibranium detector. That ultimatum drives the story, and it lands while Wakanda is still grieving.

The film streams on Disney Plus in the US, UK and Australia (checked November 3, 2026), and it can also be rented or bought from the usual digital stores. If you are new to Wakanda, start with black panther 2018, the first film in the line.

What Songs Are in Black Panther: Wakanda Forever?

Ludwig Göransson composed the score for Black Panther: Wakanda Forever (2022), which Hollywood Records released as "Black Panther: Wakanda Forever: Original Score" on November 11, 2022, with 26 tracks. The songs sit on a separate album, "Black Panther: Wakanda Forever - Music From and Inspired By", which Hollywood Records released on November 4, 2022, with 19 tracks.

Three songs are featured in the film:

  • "Lift Me Up" by Rihanna
  • "Con la brisa" by Foudeqush and Ludwig Göransson
  • "Laayli' kuxa'ano'one" by ADN Maya Colectivo, Pat Boy, Yaalen K'uj and All Mayan Winik

"Lift Me Up" was written for the film, and it plays over the end credits, after the story has finished. "Con la brisa" was also written for the film, and it plays while Namor takes Shuri on a tour of the underwater kingdom of Talokan. Göransson shares the credit on that song with Foudeqush, so the composer of the score also stands behind one of the film's original songs. "Laayli' kuxa'ano'one" plays during the end credits as well, which means the closing stretch of the film carries two separate songs.

The split between the two albums is simple: the score album holds Göransson's orchestral work, and the second album gathers the songs. For the wider picture across the saga, see the marvel soundtrack page on Cinvibe.

Full Plot of Black Panther: Wakanda ForeverSpoilers

The full plot of Black Panther: Wakanda Forever runs from Shuri's failure to save her brother to a peace with Talokan that she wins by refusing to kill Namor. After the ultimatum, the CIA suspects Wakanda of attacking the American expedition, and Namor confronts Ramonda and Shuri directly. CIA agent Everett Ross identifies the detector's creator as MIT student Riri Williams. Shuri and Okoye find Riri, but Namor's forces step in and carry Shuri and Riri to Talokan.

In Talokan, Namor shows Shuri his kingdom and proposes an alliance against the surface world, with destruction as the alternative. Nakia helps Shuri and Riri escape. Namor then attacks Wakanda, and Ramonda drowns while saving Riri.

After the funeral, Shuri rebuilds the herb with material from Talokan and gains the powers of the Black Panther. On the Ancestral Plane, Killmonger asks whether she will choose revenge or follow T'Challa's example. She takes up the suit, orders an attack on Talokan, and the Wakandans lure Namor to the surface. Shuri overpowers Namor in a fight on a desert beach, but she sees a vision of Ramonda urging peace. Namor yields, and the two nations agree to an alliance.

Premiere and Release Dates

Black Panther: Wakanda Forever premiered on Wednesday, October 26, 2022, in Hollywood, Los Angeles, with a tribute to Chadwick Boseman. Reports differ on whether the venue was the El Capitan or the Dolby Theatre, so the venue is unconfirmed.

The film opened in Australia on November 10, 2022, and in the United States and United Kingdom on November 11, 2022. The US date is confirmed, while the UK and Australian dates are as reported by Box Office Mojo. It is rated PG-13 in the US, 12A in the UK and M in Australia.

In release order it is the 27th film in the saga, following thor love and thunder and ahead of antman and the wasp quantumania. In chronological order it is 26th, after doctor strange in the multiverse of madness and before Thor: Love and Thunder. For both orders in full, see marvel movies in order.

Black Panther: Wakanda Forever Ending ExplainedSpoilers

The ending of Black Panther: Wakanda Forever is about grief, not conquest: Shuri spares Namor after seeing her mother's vision, and Wakanda and Talokan end their war with an alliance. In my opinion, that is the boldest choice in the film, because a superhero finale would normally end with the villain defeated for good.

The key beat is Killmonger's question on the Ancestral Plane, whether she will choose revenge or follow T'Challa's example. Michael B. Jordan returning as Killmonger from black panther 2018 is a deliberate echo, because that film also made its antagonist the voice of the hero's conscience. This time the question is put to Shuri, and the fight on the desert beach is her answer. She has Namor beaten, and she chooses mercy after the vision of Ramonda, who drowned saving Riri.

The closing scenes tie off the loose ends. Shuri secures the future of the Black Panther role by planting more herbs, and M'Baku challenges for the throne in her absence. That is a neat reversal of the first film, where M'Baku challenged T'Challa in ritual combat at the coronation and lost. Okoye rescues Ross, and Riri goes back to MIT. Finally, Shuri visits Nakia in Haiti and burns her funeral robe, letting herself grieve T'Challa at last.

The production history explains why the finale is so quiet. According to the AP, Ryan Coogler and Joe Robert Cole rewrote the script after Chadwick Boseman died in August 2020, moving the story from T'Challa to Wakanda's grief. Photos of Boseman were posted on set, and a shield and spear from his duel with Killmonger were placed in Coogler's trailer, so the burning of the robe reads as the film's real farewell rather than a battle result.

Compare it with thor love and thunder, released a few months earlier, where the villain Gorr is also driven by the loss of a child. Both films build their antagonists around grief, but Wakanda Forever lets its hero end the war through restraint. Perhaps that is why it feels so different from the Infinity Saga finales such as avengers endgame, which closed on a decisive victory.

It could be argued that the film leaves Wakanda with a new Black Panther and a changed relationship with Talokan, a different footing for the saga ahead of avengers doomsday.

Black Panther: Wakanda Forever Post Credit SceneSpoilers

Black Panther: Wakanda Forever has a mid credits scene. In it, Shuri meets Nakia's young son Toussaint, whom Nakia raised in secret. The boy tells her that his Wakandan name is T'Challa, which means that he is T'Challa's son.

That reveal answers a quiet question left by the main story, which is whether any part of T'Challa lives on beyond the mantle Shuri now carries.

Filming Locations

Black Panther: Wakanda Forever was filmed mainly in Atlanta, Georgia, at Trilith Studios and Tyler Perry Studios. Production also moved to Massachusetts, where MIT and Worcester were used, including a car chase in the Ernest A. Johnson Tunnel.

Scenes were also shot at Mary Ross Waterfront Park in Brunswick, Georgia. Additional photography took place in Puerto Rico and wrapped in March 2022.

Black Panther: Wakanda Forever Trivia

The most important piece of trivia is that the film was rewritten after Chadwick Boseman died in August 2020, with Ryan Coogler and Joe Robert Cole shifting the focus to Wakanda's grief.

  • Photos of Boseman were posted on set, and a shield and spear from his duel with Killmonger were placed in Coogler's trailer.
  • The cast visited Boseman's burial site before filming.
  • Filming ran longer than planned because Letitia Wright was injured in a stunt and several cast and crew tested positive for COVID-19.
  • Rihanna's Lift Me Up was written by Tems, Ludwig Göransson, Rihanna and Ryan Coogler as a tribute to Boseman, and it was recorded in five countries.
  • Boseman's family approved how T'Challa's death was handled, according to Coogler.

Facts

FAQs

Is Wakanda Forever hit or flop?

By the numbers, Black Panther: Wakanda Forever was a commercial hit. It earned $859 million worldwide on a $250 million budget, according to Box Office Mojo, with about $454 million in the US and Canada and $405 million internationally. That is well below the first Black Panther (2018), which earned considerably more worldwide, so it is a hit that did not match its predecessor.

Why is Black Panther not in Wakanda Forever?

T'Challa dies of an illness at the start of the film, after Chadwick Boseman died in August 2020. Ryan Coogler and Joe Robert Cole rewrote the script so that it follows Wakanda's grief rather than a story centered on T'Challa.

How did they explain T'Challa's death?

The film explains T'Challa's death as an illness. His sister Shuri runs out of time trying to recreate the heart shaped herb that might have saved him. Coogler has said that Boseman's family approved how the death was handled.

Who is replacing Chadwick Boseman as Black Panther?

Spoiler: Shuri, played by Letitia Wright, becomes the new Black Panther. She rebuilds the herb with material from Talokan, gains the powers of the Black Panther and takes up the suit.

Did Black Panther appear in Wakanda Forever?

T'Challa dies at the start of the film, and no new Black Panther exists for much of the story because Shuri initially refuses to rebuild the herb. In the late part of the film (spoiler), Shuri becomes the Black Panther and fights Namor in the suit.

Who is the villain in Black Panther: Wakanda Forever?

The main antagonist is Namor, the ruler of the hidden underwater kingdom of Talokan, played by Tenoch Huerta Mejía. He threatens to attack Wakanda unless it hands over the scientist who built a vibranium detector, which sets off the war between the two nations.
